It’s with somewhat of a heavy heart that I come here today to announce Richard Gilbert’s retirement. I didn’t exactly have the best career on my first player, but I had a blast the whole time. Career stats for Gilbert, including this season up to this point, below.
S27 and 28 were pretty clearly the peak of my career stat wise, performing well in both volume and efficiency. I can’t help but laugh about the “Colorado doesn’t use RBs” meme. From the beginning I was clear that I wanted to be completely team first, and that I was fine ceding as many carries as it took to raise our chances to win. It always seemed to me like everyone else was more upset about my usage than I was, but that’s just the nature of sim leagues I guess. Looking back over my stats I’m extremely happy to be retiring at exactly 69 rushing TDs (nice) and my only regret is not hitting the 100 career TD and 10,000 career yards milestones. I could almost definitely hit those by sticking around another season, but if I went through another regression I’d be sliding down the depth chart so now seems like a natural time to hang up the cleats. Plus it’s pretty clear that the Hall of Fame was never really a goal for me with this player so I’m not too worried about the longevity side of things. I also don’t have the numbers to back it up but I’m pretty confident I own the season record for pancakes by an RB, and possibly am pretty high up on the career records list, if not possibly even at the top. Granted RBs saw a huge spike of pancakes after the switch to the new sim, so I don’t really see either of those holding up.
I have to say I think my greatest accomplishment with Richard Gilbert is my absurd pancake totals. Despite not making the Hall I think my claim to fame is going to be pretty much single handedly getting pancake points taken away from RBs and TEs after just one season of those points being implemented. It was funny seeing my player have a good, but not great, season and getting carried to the top of the fantasy leaderboards due to my pancake counts. On a tangential note, I never really understood the purpose of not allowing RBs and TEs points for pancakes. We allowed the OL slot so those players could draft themselves in fantasy, so why can’t we also include RBs/FBs/TEs that also specialize in blocking? Doesn’t really make sense to me, but also not something I’m passionate enough about to argue for.
Back on track, there are a whole mess of people I want to thank for making my first player a fantastic experience. It’s kind of a weird timing because I wrote something similar to this for the offseason PT, but this is a much more expansive writeup. Rather than jump back and forth, I’m going to break it down between DSFL and ISFL level people.
DSFL
First and foremost I have to thank @FleshBagSoup and @Jay_Doctor for bringing me to Tijuana in the first place. Bagel was one of the first people to reach out to me for scouting and while admittedly they weren’t at the top of my list pre-draft, I really couldn’t have asked to come to a better team. Tijuana has been my home since joining the league, and in some ways I’m more active there than I am in my ISFL home. You guys are a huge reason that I’m still around in this league and that I am the user I am today.
Next up I want to shout out my fellow S21 draft class. I consider @slothfacekilla to be the first friend I made in the league, and I still have a blast hanging out and playing D&D with you. @CalvinGolladay is probably one of the most underrated users in the league. Easily one of the most mature, level headed people I’ve met in my time here and from my stint as the Tijuana GM I would go as far as to say he’s the best scout I’ve ever worked with. @mithrandir I’ll circle back to you later, but I couldn't have asked for a better GM to teach me the ropes and get me on track. @AL_GRINGO hanging out with you while you streamed fishing games and Crusader Kings 2 was some of the most fun I’ve had in the league. Lastly I want to give a shoutout to @siddhus, I’m super happy you were able to turn the #Waters4GM dream into a reality.
@Tonzy and @mithrandir I want to thank both of you guys for being the best partners I could have asked for. You guys both did an excellent job and it makes the job so much easier knowing you can depend on the other guy. Also want to thank @Ben for being sort of the veteran mentor in the war room for all these seasons.
I want to recognize all the players I drafted, but especially shout out that stacked S25 class. Grabbing not only @SDCore in the 1st but then also being able to grab real quality users such as @Kotasa, @GuitarMaster116, @deadlunatic, @"Punter715", and @209tacos was huge for us. S25 was the first and largest draft class that I was a GM for and was a huge confidence boost when we were able to nail so many picks out of the park. Thank you guys all for making my time as GM so enjoyable and helping Mith and I to bring home an Ultimini.
Also want to give a special shoutout to @dude_man. You were part of the first draft class after I stepped down from the position and I truly feel like you were one of the best picks we’ve made since I got in the league. I’ve been super happy to share a locker room with you in Tijuana and I’m excited to see what the future in HO holds for you.
I think that covers most of the people I want to mention at the DSFL level. Apologies if I missed you, there are so many people it gets hard to keep track of everyone.
ISFL
Similar to the DSFL level I want to first and foremost thank @Frick_Nasty and @woelkers for spending a 7th round flyer on some RB. There were 6 RBs taken ahead of me in the draft, and of those 6 only one other RB stayed with their team the whole time and didn’t go IA, so I’d like to think I was a steal there. Like I mentioned in my PT I was a little bummed I didn’t get to spend more time with you guys before you moved on to other things, but I’m happy I at least got to go on one last ride with Bubba Thumper before he retired.
Next I want to thank my current GMs in Colorado, @Sylphreni and @SchwarzNarr. My whole career I was focused on doing everything I could for the team to win, even at the expense of my personal stats and you guys have made it clear how much you appreciated that. You guys have created an awesome environment in Colorado and I’m holding out hope that we can finish the season strong and bring Richard Gilbert home a trophy for his final season.
Huge shout out to everyone in the Colorado war room. There’s not a single one of you that I don’t enjoy chatting with and you all provide valuable perspectives into what we do. There are a couple people I want to specifically bring up. First is @Ephenssta, you were an incredible partner when we applied for the Baltimore position and even though we fell just short, I’m extremely proud of the product we put forward. Secondly is @Tesla, I only knew you from reputation before you came to Colorado and I have to say you’ve lived up to it fully.
There are lots of other people I want to recognize, but frankly this has dragged on a bit longer than I would have liked. There are far too many users in this sim league that have built it into the positive, fun place that it is and I’m looking forward to going through another career.
Keep an eye out for my recreate.
