Referees are human and in the heat of battle it is hard to remember that. I have seen a million bad calls in my day, but recently, we had a bad no call happen that helped decide the outcome of one of our games. We all had to jump on the referees verbally after this one. When we were playing in the 4th quarter against Austin, we needed a touchdown in the worst possible way. Down 3 points, our quarterback was looking at the defense and realized that one of the defensive lineman was getting eager. So he did a hard count and got the defensive lineman to jump off sides. A second after the lineman jumped, our center snapped the ball to our quarterback. Thinking this was a free play, our quarter back threw a ball deep into the endzone. The referees somehow missed this penalty and the pass was intercepted. We ended up losing the game, when we should have been given 5 yards and would have had a first down in scoring position.
Daron Arnold is the textbook definition of workman-like. He goes onto the field and does his job. End of story. Sure, sometimes he might inadvertently try a tug here or there while in coverage, but Arnold does make a point of noting when he messes up. Every mistake is a learning opportunity, after all. Something to go back and check in the film room.
So with so much emphasis on learning from mistakes so that he never makes them again, it does bother him quite a bit when he's flagged on a bad call. Arnold has absolutely no issue taking ownership of his actions, but to hurt his team for something he didn't do just doesn't sit well with him. Of course, as frustrated as he might be, he generally keeps his head down and lets the bad call fuel his drive to be better. After all, he is a grinder at heart.
So this one is a bit of a funny story. There was one game when blackstone was one the receiving side of a bad call. The game situation was fourth and three late in the fourth quarter with the ball around the fifty yard line. Blackstone knew that the defense needed a big stop and the game was all but theirs. As the ball was snapped he timed the jump just right, was over the line in an instant, and performed a perfect uppercut to get past the left tackle. He hit the quarterback from behind just as he was handing the ball off to the running back, attempting to make the sack. He landed hard on top of the QB and started celebrating as the crowd exploded in applause. However he turned around in time to see a yellow flag at his feet for unnecessary roughness. The ref must have thought that Blackstone hit the qb too late and was trying to take a cheap shot at the QB. It was a bad call because Blackstone was making a good faith attempt to take down the ball carrier or at least disrupt the handoff, but the call wasn't going to be overturned. It also meant that he gave up a first down, but it didn't matter. That hit was enough to earn him kudos from his team on the sidelines as well as make the highlight reels. The defenses ended up forcing a turnover on the next set of downs to secure the victory.
Let me take ye back t' me high school days. O' course it's low budget, 'n thar's no instant replay. But, scallywag, some o' those calls still make me mad.
It's the state championship me senior year, 'n I be lined up out wide. Right in from o' the referee. The DB gives me a wee bump at the line, but I muscle through it 'n run past 'im. I be gone fer a touchdown if the QB sees me. O' course he sees me; he's one o' the best. He won Gatorade player o' the year in Kentucky. Anyway, the ball be in the air, 'n the DB grabs a huge chunk o' me shirt aye. Right. In. Front. O'. The. Referee.
No call. I absolutely lose it. Easiest pass interference call in the history o' the world, 'n this scallywag blows it. I get a 15 yard penalty, 'n coach has t' come o'er t' calm me down. When I got back t' the huddle, I told the QB t' jus' throw the ball t' the end zone; I'll catch it. On the mighty next play, I beat the DB again, this time fer a touchdown. I hand the ball t' the referee wit' a sly smile on me face.
Ghastly call, but a happy endin'. We won the state championship.
