The Season 3 regular season has come to a close. Some teams are preparing for the playoffs. Other teams are preparing Season 4. Players have packed their lockers, team executives have begun preparing for the off-season. The Las Vegas Legion though should be preparing for sanctions and punishment from the league’s head office. The team has been over the salary cap for the entirety of Season 3.
At the start of season 3, this was the Legion’s roster:
(values in millions)
QB-Bercovici, J.: 6
QB-Ryder, L.: 0.5
RB-Cobb, K.: 1
RB-RunMachine13, Z.: 0
RB-Savea, A.: 3
FB-BlockBot, Z.: 0
G-Long, L.: 0.5
G-Stone, W.: 8
T-Bullard, T.: 4
T-Coalrange, C.: 0.5
T-Jefferspin, S.: 0.5
C-Bigboy19, Z.: 0
C-Tebow, T.: 0.5
TE-Larsendorf, R.: 2
TE-Tenzini, G.: 2
WR-Stormblessed: 4
WR-CatchMachine2, Z.: 0
WR-LeClair, A.: 2
WR-Ross, J.: 2
WR-StoneHandsBot, Z.: 0
CB-Grant, T.: 0.5
CB-Maddox, S.: 0.5
CB-Morgan, L.: 2
CB-Shoate, T.: 3
LB-Flimjollywop, S.: 1
LB-Linebacker, Z.: 0
LB-Stropko, B.: 0.5
LB-Varga, T.: 5.5
DT-Cox, V.: 2
DT-Newenglander, T.: 0.5
DT-Saginaw, A.: 0.5
DE-Blade, B.: 3
DE-Lockkeu, V.: 0.5
FS-Lecavalier, R.: 2
FS-Speed, D.: 1.5
SS-Blanket3, Z.: 0
SS-SBot, Z.: 0
K-KickMachine5, Z.: 0
P-Walsh, B.: 0.5
Which totals a salary of $60,000,000. However, the team also had two cap penalties from releasing players last season:
(amount of penalty listed)
DE-Taylor, G: 1.25
RB-Newman, M: 0.75
Bringing their Season 3 to $62,000,000. However, they also paid for S3 rookie Connor Tanner to switch from WR to TE out of the team’s salary cap, bringing their S3 total to $66,000,000. Which is $1,000,000 over the league’s salary cap of $65,000,000.
This is the way their roster stayed until a midseason trade with the Baltimore Hawks. Before Week 5 of Season 3 (on 9/24), the Las Vegas Legion sent Stormblessed to the Hawks for John Baker. Stormblessed’s salary was $4,000,000. So losing him dropped their salary total below the cap to a nice $62,000,000. But, the Legion weren’t done making transactions that day. Immediately after the trade, the Legion called up the newly acquired John Baker with his $2,000,000 salary. Now they sit at $64,000,000, still under. But then they also called up Season 3 rookie TE Connor Tanner and his salary of $6,000,000. This again pushed them over the salary cap and had them sitting at $70,000,000, a solid $5,000,000 over.
Now I know what you’re thinking, “What’s the big deal, this team only won 2 games?” Well that is exactly why it is so important to note this. Both of the Legion’s wins came after TE Connor Tanner was called up. And he played a big role in each of those wins totalling 12 catches for 104 yards and 4 touchdowns. Connor Tanner was obviously given such a large Season 3 contract with the Legion intending to stash him in the DSFL and not be responsible for his salary. However, they must have forgot about this by his Week 5 call-up.
If Connor Tanner isn’t on the Legion, do they win those 2 games? In the Legion’s first win, at the Sabercats, Tanner had a late 4th quarter touchdown that ended up being the game-winning touchdown. In addition to that he had already scored a TD earlier in the game. In the Legion’s second win, versus the Yeti, Tanner scored the Legion’s only two touchdowns! The final score was 14-10, with Tanner opening the scoring in the first quarter and adding what ended up, again, being the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter.
I believe, without a shadow of a doubt, that Tanner significantly contributed to these victories. With this newly unearthed information, will the league step-in? Will they penalize the Legion for being over the salary cap for the entirety of season 3? Will the league provide Kevin Cushing with a way out of the bet that has him set to join the Legion for Season 5 due to these two wins?
