Some people find behind the scenes information interesting or at least illuminating to the lead of up to particular decisions and actions. So, I figure it might as well be beneficial for those in the NSFL to understand my thought process and how I ended up in Yellowknife.
The central premise of everything leading up to the trade which sent me to Canada was that my activity level would drop because of real life concerns. In my mind, if I stayed on the team that would handicap San Jose to an unreasonable degree and essentially destroy what I had been building there. The first trade in Arizona was completed as Kolbe pointed out, to open a window. This window could be described as desparate but made sense to me if you considered that both Arizona and Orange County would take a while to rearm and we had a very limited space of two to three seasons at the most to take advantage of NOLA's regression attrition.
I became more convinced over time that this had to be the draft to move me for some kind of return whether conditional or not. San Jose needed value now rather than later, and as I pointed out to CK, there was a decision to be made that overcame sentimentality. CK had mostly been in the backseat for the last two seasons, but he was the only option to take over in the case of my absence. Ideally when I asked for the trade I imagined that the Wraiths or Hawks would be interested, although I'm not quite sure how Slm felt about all of this. With how things ended up, CK picked Oles, Muford, and Mabb who are ideally the people I would have selected in an alternate reality where I could have stayed on as the SJS GM. However, the selection of Andrew over Enigmatic is awfully curious even if he is a great guy regardless.
I think while it's unfortunate that I could not stay in SJS, I believe they're in the same exact position without having lost much value by sending me to YKW. They gained a desparately needed franchise running back and still get their key wide receiver to pair with Flash. It slows them down a bit to have a younger quarterback but Andrew should have a vastly different developmental experience than I had based on what he has to work with in general.
Personally, I am of the opinion that my tenure in SJS was a turning point for the team despite the missteps I had such as the failure to attract free agents or waiting to take TDZ in the second round despite having got GoonerBear at #4 by some miracle. I will say that I'm glad to have had the opportunity to select the players I did, and moving foward they should go on to do great things.
