Well. He was a interesting boy. He always played wide receiver, but I never thought that his hands were bad enough to change to corner. I always played QB and he was my NO. 1 target. One day the coach put him at Corner. He intercepted me 3 times during scrimmage, the only time I’ve ever been intercepted more than twice, game or not. Coach was amazed by his ability and kept him at both positions. However, when we were in our Junior year, Jeffery tore his ACL playing Wide Receiver, I remember the play exactly. He was running a shock post route (a post route with a stop in the middle) and he flicked for the post route, I instantly threw it knowing he would be open. He fell to the ground and my throw went over his head. He instantly grabbed at his knee and I feared the worst. He missed the rest of the season and was out of school for a week. Later coach told me that Jeffery and him got into a huge fight about Jeffery playing WR again. Jeffery continued to be great in the following years, I remember when he got that pick 6 in his last game as a Seminole, that’s when I knew he was the real deal.
I never played football, but I knew Jeffery the best off the field. When he was a freshman, us 3 were the outcasts (Anthony, Jeffery, myself). Then, they tried out for the football team and they got a boost of popularity. They never stopped hanging out with me, I’m glad for that. Then when Jeffery and Anthony made the most amazing performance by a duo in a game. Jeffery had 226 reception yards and 14 recptions, with 58 rushing yards and 3 combined TDs. Anthony had 351 yards, 25 completions and 5 total TDs. They ended up leading the school to it’s first state title in 25 years. After that performance, they instantly became popular. They never forgot me, even after high school, we all lived together and went to parties, had so much fun. Then, Anthony’s mom passed, and he transferred away. Jeffery and me started to become great friends. I remember the first time he said it. He told me “my life would suck without you” I never told him how much that meant to me. My parents had neglected me and I had only been able to go to college because Jeffery got a scholarship, and his family used his college fund for me. So, all I have to say, is thank you, he is worth your first round pick, he is worth it.
Wow. I’m not crying you're crying. Ok. That was, um, interesting… Ok. So here are some points from other people in his life. Girlfriend Esmeralda- “He was always competitive, anytime he did anything he always wanted to win. I remember the first time they lost he was so unhappy and angry at himself. That’s when I knew I loved him. Anyways yeah he’s pretty cool.” Statement from his high school DC, “Jeffery always had a fire that kept him going, he wouldn’t stop until his team won. I remember a specific game against our rival, it was a tie game and they threw up a Hail Mary with 3 seconds left. Jeffery got the interception and, despite multiple yells from our sideline to stop and go to OT, he continued to run. He ended up forcing a face mask around the 40, where he was tackled. So we got a chance to win. We threw the ball to him at the 20, and he broke 3 tackles to win the game. He is stellar and deserves a first round pick.” Jeffery Murphy’s parents on his fire, “When he was growing up, he was very competitive, he always wanted to be on top of whoever he played. When he was 7 years old he played his first game of football. He caught 2 TDs and won the game for his team. I remember his first loss in high school, he was devastated because he dropped the GW TD in the end zone. Ever since then, he has worked on his hands and has never dropped a GW TD since.”
