*The Luchadores Make History: 3-peat Champions

The S10 Ultimini was a special one, as the Tijuana Luchadores made history, winning their 3rd Ultimini championship in a row, the first time any team has done so. The team started the year on a down note with 2 loses in a row, but quickly picked it up winning the next 10 games out of 12. As in years past, the team ran their unique multiple QB system, with both mobile QB Matexas and pocket passing QB Falconi splitting time. Both the pass game and the run game were successful, placing 2nd as a team in pass yards and rushing yards for the season, and first in yards and points scored. Despite a good offense, the real game winner for the team was the top notch defense, racking up 32 sacks, 26 turnovers, and 3 touchdowns on the year.

We now go to GMs Epictitus Milburn and Icy Douglas to discuss the historic season.

How have the Luchadores continued to win in a league with such high player turnover?

Epictitus: We (Icy and I) both love the draft. I think that it might be the highlight of the job for both of us. We really get into the characters and potential of each prospect and can’t wait to welcome them into the Luchador family. Yes, we’ve had some wiffs in the past, particularly in this most recent draft, but overall I think we do a respectable job of hitting the right draft picks. And, more importantly, they do a wonderful job of showing up on the field for us.

Icy: First off we have been really fortunate to have some solid players stay down in the DSFL, such as our 2 QBs, but overall I think we have tried to have a consistent culture in the LR throughout the season and a constantly evolving game plan going into each week. This evolving game plan has helped us sneak some wins out against very talented teams.

Do you think you can make history again by 4peating?

Epictitus: Sure, why not? Theoretically, winning in a previous season doesn’t make it harder to win in the current one. But I do think that we will be looking at a tighter finish for all of the “big four” DSFL teams than we’ve had in the past. In particular, it’s been 5 seasons since San Antonio has had a playoff win. They’ll be out for blood this season, and we’re looking forward to it.

Icy: I definitely think it is possible. We will be losing a lot of talent to the NSFL and have some new experienced GM competition in our division this season, but I think we are prepared to make the moves necessary to win ball games.

Now, we go to All-Star cornerback Xandra Troyski, who has won 2 championships with the team.

Xandra, what do you think made this S11 team special?

Xandra: This year, like last year, we had a really nicely balanced team, both on offense and defense. When I wasn't here for the first half of the season, Dugnut (@Bzerkap) did a really nice job on defense. Then we got to be a dynamic duo at corner when I was sent back to the DSFL, just in time for a tough part of our schedule. Looking at our scores through the season, you can really see our whole defensive unit working really well. Of course our offense did fabulously as well, but the defense doesn't get enough credit, so here I am, giving credit where credit is due. We really jelled this season and made some magic happen.
