San Jose has been looked at poorly for years, and it’s been a chip on everybody’s shoulder that comes here. This season, is where San Jose is looking to turn it around and in all honesty it starts on the defensive side of the ball. Defense wins championships, and that is a strong motto that the Sabercats are looking at this season. Here we are going to break down each piece on the defense and where they were drafted, as well as what they can bring to the table. This is the Meet the Defense, San Jose style.
The first group on the defensive side we are going to talk about is the Defensive Line. That means the biggest topic of discussion is the one, the only Freezer Riposte. @Mavfatha Freezer was drafted First overall in the Season 12 NSFL draft and is already at 299 TPE. The man came into the San Jose locker room with a no play attitude and has put his nose down in the dirt and has gone to work. He is a wonderful guy to share a locker room with as well, wise and a worker, and even though he broke his face at practice, he still goes hard day in and day out. This man is already a force to be reckoned with, and would honestly be a key for years to come. Freezer is an amazing person to have brought into this Locker Room and he is going to scare opposing Offensive Linemen.
The Next member of the Defensive Line is Danny Methane. @DannyMethane Danny has been a quiet earner since he was drafted 30th overall in the Season 11 NSFL Draft. Many players in those later rounds have usually been inactive players but not Danny. Danny has been a wonderful addition to the locker room and to the field. Last season he was tied for second in tackles for loss at 13. Even though he hasn’t been the top earner of the draft, he already has a wonderful 196 TPE which has been super helpful. He is always in the locker room coming up with ideas and he makes some pretty dope signatures as well. Easily one of the biggest steals in recent memory, Danny is going to continue to improve and help take this defense to a whole other level.
The third member of the Defensive Line in San Jose needs no introduction as many of you already know the man Ja’Brill Tuck. @Keyg_an Ja’Brill was actually taken three picks after Danny in the Season 12 draft though, taking Ja’Brill at 33 is going to be quite a steal. Ja’Brill has been hit or miss before in the field and many teams counted him out, especially after his agent has had some not so great run-ins with some of the other teams in the league. That hasn’t stopped Ja’Brill from coming in early, and often and keeping his head down and hitting the gym and locker room. Usually one of the first ones in the Locker room and one of the last ones out of the gym, Ja’Brill seems to be like the man who is going for it all this year. Already at 132 TPE, this man continues to impress and amaze the team that drafted him so late.
The Defensive Line has been a miss in San Jose as of recently, but these three young players are nothing to laugh at. They look to be a huge cog in the piece of San Jose that continues to churn out and look to make a splash this upcoming season. The Next part of the defense we are going to look at is the Line backing Corp.
The First member we will discuss of our Linebackers has to be the Man, the Myth, the Legend, Ben Horne. @iseedoug One of the oldest members on this defense, Ben Horne was drafted in Season 8 and was 6th Overall. Ben Horne has been chugging along since the bad times, and it looks like the good times are finally coming around for this old head. Ben is sitting strong at 742 TPE and continues to impress with his on the field demeanor and leadership. Some would even say that he is the Quarterback of the defense, calling out plays and getting the young blood into position and ready to take on whatever is thrown at them. Ben Horne is looking to make a splash this season with this defense and I expect nothing but high level of competitiveness out of him.
The next member of this linebacking unit is Kolby Deringer. @GoonerBear Kolby Deringer was the 4th overall pick in the Season 9 NSFL Draft and has played like an absolute monster. The man has already amassed 779 TPE and continues to just be a workhorse on and off the field. He isn’t the loudest member in the locker room, but all the players look up to him and Horne, because they just have a knack for what to do on the field. Deringer has shown time and time again how to be in the right place at the right time and continues to impress with his sideline to sideline speed and agility. Kolby is looking to continue his dominance on this Defense, and even changed his number to honor Vincent Sharpei. This man has such great character, San Jose is lucky to have him.
The Final member of this Linebacking group is none other than newly acquired Chad Pennington. Chad was brought over from Yellowknife in an offseason trade and was drafted 5th overall in the Season 8 Draft. Another man who made an immediate impact as soon as he got to San Jose, who has brought leadership and wisdom to the locker room and another absolute workhorse in the gym. Chad has amassed over 924 TPE already, and continues to burn away, looking to be the all-time leader in Tackles. Chad helps bring this Linebacking group to another level, and San Jose is happy to see this man continue to improve and become an even greater player. @caltroit_red_flames
The final unit we are going to discuss is going to be the Secondary of San Jose. Talking about the Secondary here in San Jose, you have to discuss the oldest member on the team first and foremost. Benson Bayley @`BayleyIsland` was drafted 4th overall in the Season 3 NSFL Draft. He has been in regression the past few years, and this is his last year, as he is retiring at the end of the season. San Jose was smart to bring such a leader back, and Bayley is happy to be back with his former team. Benson is finishing his career where he started it, and is looking to help bring the team back to the playoffs. He sits at 548 TPE where he will most likely play the nickel cornerback. Opposing teams better look out, because even though Benson is older, he still is sneaky fast.
The Next Secondary member we will be discussing is none other than cornerback Xandra Troyski. @mabb Xandra was drafted in Season 10 as the 9th pick in the draft and has been a quiet work horse since then. She has already amassed 488 TPE and is not slowing down. She is part of a dangerous secondary and continues to be a quiet competitor. She sits opposite side of the next member of on this secondary and has continued to show that size and sex doesn’t matter because she is bringing the pain no matter who you are or where you are at. She’s coming at you with a vengeance. Xandra continues to be underrated and will continue to surprise people, and teams are going to fear the name Troyski!
The next member of the secondary is Xandra Troyski’s running mate, D’Pez Poopsie. D’Pez was drafted first overall in the season 10 draft and has been an absolute work horse. D’Pez Poopsie has brought a can-do attitude and switched from running back to Cornerback. He has amassed 669 TPE already and is on no pace to slow down. This man is excited to see what this defense can do, and continues to work hard day in and day out to bring the best out of the San Jose Sabercats. Hopefully he can get his head out of his ass and start picking off opposing quarterbacks as well.
The first of the two safeties in San Jose is Thad Pennington. @Blastmeaway Brought over in the trade to Yellowknife with his brother Chad, Thad has been another blessing in disguise. With Ja Brill retiring, Safety was a huge hole, and Thad was there to fill it. Being the 10th overall pick in Season 8, Thad has brought over with him a winning attitude and a great team spirit. Sitting at 578 TPE, Thad is no joke. He and Chad look to be the missing pieces to help turn this defense around. Thad looks to continue his dominance in the secondary coming to San Jose with a stout unit already in place.
The last secondary member is none other than Safety Trey Staley. @ckroyal92 Trey was drafted 9th overall in the Season 12 draft, and is one of the youngest members on the team. Trey sits at a decent 241 TPE and is looking to continue to improve on that number. Trey is doing everything in his power to help right the San Jose ship, and this season it looks like it could be headed in the right direction. Look for Trey to be a ball hawk in the secondary because he has a lot of other members back there already that are proven.
