Ready to be graded
Following an eventful first two games of the Prospect Bowl, we got a chance to sit down with the tournament’s leading rusher, Forrest Gump and ask a few questions about his team and the upcoming draft.
Thanks for coming, Forrest.
Thank y’all for having me, it’s been a very exciting few games.
With your recent success in the Prospect Bowl, you’ve gained a few fans out there, and we’ve seen people cheering “Run Forrest, Run” on the sidelines. How are you feeling about this newfound popularity?
It doesn’t really affect me all that much. I just really love running, soon as someone tells me I get to run I just get up and go. I’m glad people like watching my play and I can’t wait to show them what I can do in the DSFL.
You’re currently in second place for League MVP behind Terry Taffy, as well as second place for Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year behind Janes, what do you rate your chances for those awards?
I’m just happy to be in the conversation if I’m being honest. It’s a really talented and sizeable group we’re getting drafted out of, so being able to make an impact is important. The other backs you mentioned are really stand up guys and boy do they know how to run the ball. It’s tough to not bring up his 4 touchdowns when talking about the Candyman.
You’ve now played 2 games for the Grizzlies, both showed some positives but only 1 game resulted in a win. What do you feel the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the team are?
Most importantly we’re all like peas and carrots in the locker room. Everyone is real nice and helpful, and everyone believes in a whole team game. We’re like a little family right now and it’s gonna be real tough when we all go off to different teams, but that’s part of the job. It’s tough to criticize much in the first game, we were dominant and were able to execute our game plan. In the second game, we had some more struggles. Nobody’s really mentioned it yet so I have to talk about my own performance that game. Honestly felt a little more consistent than the first game, like I was getting more yards on average rather than a few longer ones and getting stuffed other times like week one, but I couldn’t find the endzone, had a critical fumble, and let in 2 sacks. Just ‘cause I’m getting yards out there doesn’t mean I don’t still gotta improve. I love runnin’, and I can run like the devil, but I need to work on other areas of the game. I also don’t like to blame anybody, but you can’t ignore the passing game struggles last game. I think going forward if we maybe started with some shorter passes to get Gimmy in rhythm more it could help. Not saying we have to run screens all day but I can get involved in the passing game a bit, gets me the ball in open space and lets me run. I also think Dorfus could get a little more involved and take some of Gimmy’s touches to ease the pressure. Don’t want to lose any touches myself, I’d like every opportunity I can get but we need a little shakeup in game plan if our quarterback goes 8/33 with 3 picks.
Well Forrest, can’t let you leave without asking your thoughts on your draft stock as the league leading rusher, how are you feeling about that?
I’d like to go as early as possible, of course, but there’s a lot of talent in this draft. I’m humbled by the attention and encourage any GM’s interested in me to shoot me a message if they haven’t already, I’m always happy to talk and make new best good friends. It’s tough to predict which running back is going to go first, let alone which player is, so I’m happy to just keep focusing on the Prospect Bowl and show everybody what I can do. Hopefully someone will take a shine to me and call my name on draft day.
Thank you and good luck out there today and the rest of the week.
