Peter Larson, new QB for the San Antonio Marshalls turns interviewer as he welcomes new player Mako Mendonca to the league.
PL: Firstly from one rookie to another can I say welcome to the NSFL, you must be excited to be here?
MM: Thanks Peter, I am so pumped to be here and I can't wait to find a team and start playing some ball.
PL: I hear that your route into the sport is a little different from most players, could you tell me about that?
MM: Certainly, I am originally from the UK so never played football in high school like most other players, I did play soccer, rugby and cricket and always loved sport and competing though. I first came to the US in a university exchange programme to Rice University in Houston, and that is where I started playing.
PL: How did you go from an exchange student to Rice's standout running back?
MM: I was only meant to be at Rice for a year and went along to walk ons to support a friend, when they saw me practising with him I was asked to try out and the rest is history, I stayed at Rice for 3 years in the end completing my studies and of course playing for the Owls. It was a steep learning curve at first but my experience playing Rugby really helped.
PL: That sounds like an amazing journey, I hear that professional sports run in your family?
MM: Yes that's right my uncle Clive was a professional soccer player for 16 years, I have always looked up to him and he has been really helpful in supporting me.
PL: I hear that you missed the start of the season due to injury, what happened there?
MM: I was just a freak accident in the off season, I was all ready to join the draft, performed great at workouts then on a day off I went to Disneyland, I was on splash mountain but made the mistake of being in the back of the boat with my O-line friends in the front. I was catapulted out the ride and damaged my shoulder. I am now over this injury and am fully fit and raring to go!
PL: catapulted out of a boat on splash mountain, wow, you sure couldn't have made that up! Thank you for your time and good luck with your career.
MM: Thanks Peter
