I'm working on a project for the DSFL this season that may very well evolve into a major NSFL thing down the road. I mostly posted this to gauge interest in something like this and see if people would enjoy it! So let me know. Also because this was a rough draft, I actually worked on the Draft Tracker Friday, so it is out of date. Next week it'll be updated the day of posting.
"Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Channel 18 Sports Center with Bjørn Ironside. Bjørn, lead us off this morning."
"Well hello there and thank you mike. This week the preseason kicked off in the DSFL. In the future we're going to bring you stats, breakdowns, predictions, and sideline reports to get you started on the right foot heading into the regular season. But first, we have to talk about the weather. The weather absolutely ruined this week's report. Why? We had nothing to report on due to the cancelling of the preseason. What were with all of those lightning storms? It was like they were possessed. For those of you who don't know, the preseason was delayed for two weeks do to persistent lightning storms over the stadiums of every single one of the DSFL stadiums. They were each isolated events and there are plenty of theories why. Some believe it was a conspiracy to protest the existence of preseason football. Some believe that these stadiums may have all somehow been built over ancient native American burial grounds. Others believe that god may just hate the DSFL. Whatever the case, this delay put a huge damper on a lot of rookies who were looking to hit the ground running and make their debut in the league."
Path to the Draft
"To kick off this report, we're going to dive into the NSFL draft tracker. This is where we take a look at the top 20 prospects in the DSFL and give them a ranking based on multiple criteria. Training, activity, and money are the name of the game here.”

“As you can see, the race to the draft is pretty tight overall with that massive tie for 19th place. I can’t wait to see if it remains tight for the rest of the season.”
The State of the Game
"This is a section where we would normally grab interviews with a couple players or GMs to see exactly where they stand on the league, things that are happening, and events as a whole. Unfortunately due to the state of preseason, we were unable to really cover any significant ground. We did manage to hit the streets though and ask an important question that has been going around DSFL locker rooms. So here we go."
Ironside: "Does Scorp suck?"
woelkers: "I mean honestly? No, I love scorp, that's a great guy. But for the sake of the meme? Yes, scorp absolutely and undeniably sucks.
Ironside: "Does Scorp suck?"
DylanDeluxe: "Not only does Scorp sucks. Scorp ALMOST sucks as bad as a Gimmy-led offense."
Ironside: "Does Scorp suck?"
Hallmonitor_20: "Worse than Nathan Peterman last season."
Ironside: "Does Scorp suck?"
TomHanks: “My official stance is Scorp rocks. Lmao”
Ironside: "Does Scorp suck?"
124715: “Absolutely, yes. May I add one more comment? Scorp sucks lmao.”
“It has become apparent that this is a very divisive and widely debated topic in the NSFL with no concrete answer. Unfortunately our deep dive into this question gave no results, but perhaps one day we’ll be able to dig up a bit more evidence on if Scorp sucks or not.”
Game Coverage
“In this section, we would normally go to analyst and prized journalist, Stacy Stanbul. Unfortunately due to cancelling the preseason games, we didn’t have much to work with. Still, Stacy took the time to do some quick coverage of one of the Prospect Bowl games to show you guys what you have to look forward to. Take it away, Stacy.”

“The Prospect Bowl kicked off with the Mongoose taking on the Wolfpack. The final score did not reflect the overall dominance that the Mongoose asserted on the field. Out gaining the Wolfpack by 128 yards, the Mongoose offense came out of the gate like a well oiled machine that had been playing together for several seasons. The two-headed attack of McCoy and McTaco kept the chains moving, with QB Victor Bravo making several key throws when needed, putting up a respectable 205 yards with 1 touchdown on 17 completions. The lone standout for the Wolfpack was RB/KR Jake Ulter, responsible for their only touchdown of the game. Utler rushed for 74 yards on the ground and took a kickoff 90 yards to the house. Chico De La Agua stood out for the losing defense, picking up 14 tackles and a sack.
Breakout player of the game: Benny Rodriguez 6 Rec, 81 Yds, 1 TD.
Not a lot was known about Rodriguez heading into the Prospect Bowl but he quicklly established himself as a dominant threat on the outside. Wolfpacks' corners had a tough time sticking to Benny all came. The highlight of the game came when Rodriguez caught a fade route for a touchdown, leaping over two defenders to pluck the ball out of the sky.
It will be interesting to see if this prospect can keep this production up for the rest of the Prospect Bowl.
Disappointing performance of the game: Phillip Helmet 9/20, 97 yards, 0 TD’s, 0 Int.
Many scouts were intrigued to see what Helmet could do on the field after what some are calling the most awkward presser ever given. Undisclosed GM:”He just stood there at the podium staring at all of us. We’d ask a question, then he would stare into our souls not saying anything. I don’t care what he does in the Prospect Bowl, I’m not drafting him” Helmet struggled to find his target all night with CB Grimmer nearly picking him off on one errant throw. If not for WR J.Cooter bailing Helmet out on several occasions, this could have been the single worse Prospect Bowl performance by a QB prospect we’ve seen in some time.
I’m looking forward to the season really kicking off so we can see how these guys perform against real competition. Thank you, Bjørn.”
Position Analysis
“Every week we’re going to come in here an analyze a position. We’re going to look at every performance for players at that position for the week and compare them against each other. Who was the best player at that position? Look no further than the numbers that position analyst Jeremy Shoemaker has provided for us on the running backs of the prospect bowl. Again, we’re going to dial it back a bit due to the lack of preseason action. Take it over, Jeremy.”
“With the draft ending and players practicing with their new teams for the upcoming season, let's take a look back at the top rushers of the prospect bowl. Many running backs where taken early in the DSFL draft and they all look to make huge impacts for their new teams. Marcella Toriki was the first running back off the board as the 6th overall pick to Norfolk followed by Jake Utler as the 7th pick to Palm Beach. Seven total running backs would be taken in the top 50. We're going to break down each of them to see who were the steals of the draft.
First we're going to look at total yards. This is the true primetime stat of all running backs. These are the records that are being chased every year as running backs looks to be the next to reach 2000 yards.
Hank McCoy, 72nd, Tijuana - 525 Yds
Mathias Hanyadi, 33rd, San Antonio, 503 Yds
Marcella Toriki, 6th, Norfolk, 406 Yds
Charles Allen, 43rd, Palm Beach, 404 Yds
Hank McCoy ran wild during the six weeks of the prospect bowl gaining 525 yards which makes it a huge surprise that he was pick 72nd overall. Tijuana got a huge steal with this pick up hoping he can put up similar numbers and easily put up 1500 yards in the DSFL. Hanyadi also put up 500+ giving the Marshals a potential break out star to look forward to this season.
Now we need to look at the amount of attempts each running back had. It's easy to run for 1000 yards if you get 500 carries, so we are going to break down who had the most touches.
Mathias Hanyadi, 33rd, San Antonio - 114 atts
Hank McCoy, 72nd, Tijuana - 110 atts
Charles Allen, 43rd, Palm Beach - 103 atts
Marcella Toriki, 6th, Norfolk- 99 atts
So as expected the league leaders in yards also lead the league in attempts. The eye popper here is that Hanyadi and Allen played together on the same prospect team giving them a powerhouse run offense with two future stars.
Now let's actually see just how effective each runner was with the ball in their hands by taking a look at yards per carry to see who really made the most of their opportunities.
Hank Mccoy, 72nd, Tijuana - 4.77 YPC
Orien Drake, 52nd, Kansas City - 4.60 YPC
Mathias Hanyadi, 33rd, San Antonio - 4.41 YPC
Jake Utler, 7th, Palm Beach - 4.19 YPC
After looking at yards per carry it shows that McCoy may be the real deal. Not only does he have the yards but he’s consistently putting up big runs every time the ball is in his hands and is willing to be a workhorse. Drake and Utler both make their first appearance on our list showing that they also put up consistently good runs even though they didn't touch the ball as much.
Alright, everyone knows the league doesn't care how many yards you put up as long as you're scoring touchdowns. If you have 1 carry for 5 yards but a touchdown then that may be all your team needs of you. So let's see who was able to score the most for their team.
Marcella Toriki, 6th, Norfolk - 2 TDs
Orien Drake, 52nd, Kansas City - 2 TDs
Charles Allen, 42rd, Palm Beach - 2 TDs
Hank McCoy, 72nd, Tijuana - 2 TDs
There were 14 total rushing touchdowns scored in the prospect bowl and 8 of them were scored by this group right here. There really wasn't a stand out when it came to scoring touchdowns so this whole group should be rewarded.
Finally we are going to look at the best games of the group. These running backs put up huge numbers to help their teams win and really took control of the offense.
Mathias Hanyadi, 33rd, San Antonio - 115 yds
Marcella Toriki, 6th, Norfolk - 105 yds
Paco McTaco, 47th, Portland - 104 yds
Hank McCoy, 72nd, Tijuana - 103 yds
These four runners had the only four games with a 100 yard rusher. McCoy and McTaco of the McDonalds club both had their outstanding games on the same day creating an unstoppable ground assault. Hanyadi had the best game of the season rushing for 115 yards on 23 carries followed by Toriki who put up 105 yards a week after putting up 99 yards in a game.
That will do it for our running back breakdown. Below are all the stats from the outstanding running backs that were drafted and we'll be back next week with a breakdown of regular season kickoff.
H. McCoy, 72nd, Tijuana - 110 att 525 yds 16 longest 2TDs 4.77 YPG
P. McTaco, 47th, Portland - 96 att 388 yds 17 longest 1TD 4.04 YPG
J. Utler, 7th, Palm Beach - 95 att 398 yds 14 longest 1 TD 4.19 YPC
O. Drake, 52nd, Kansas City - 83 att 382 yds 22 longest 2 TDs 4.60 YPC
M. Hanyadi, 33rd, San Antonio - 114 att 503 yds 33 longest 1TD 4.41 YPC
C. Allen, 42nd, Palm Beach - 103 att 404 yds 14 longest 2 TDs 3.92 YPC
F. Dotson, 42nd, Tijuana - 95 att 126 yds 10 longest 0 TDs 1.33 YPC
M. Toriki, 6th, Norfolk- 99 att 406 yds 16 longest 2 TDs 4.1 YPC
Back to you, Ironside.“
Game Predictions
“This is normally where the esteemed number cruncher Zach Bailey would give us a systematic rundown of the game predictions and tell us how it will all play out. He had a 92% pick rate in the Prospect Bowl using his prediction formula and will be looking to continue his success here. Unfortunately, we were not provided a schedule in time for this article and we had no idea how this week would shake out, so we had to skip this segment today. Something for you guys to look forward to!”
Power Rankings
“I don’t think I have to explain power rankings to you guys. We’re all football fans here and we understand the basic concepts of ranking teams by strengths. We don’t have much information to go off of in this early season, but we’ll take a look at where they ended a season ago and work with what we have.
1. Tijuana Luchadores 12-2: These guys are our DSFL champions and had the best record last season. Sometimes, the rich get richer. Tijuana followed up their success on the season with success in the draft. They had the deepest draft of any of the teams and there is a chance they struck gold on a few of their picks. It wouldn’t be hard at all to convince anyone that Tijuana has a strong chance of repeating.
2. Portland Pythons 11-3: Last season, Portland was a team that did everything right. Except finish. They led the league in points scored, they led the league with least points allowed, and at one point they had the longest winning streak on the season. Then they collapsed at the finish line. This team fell to Tijuana in the finals this past season and they didn’t lose much after. They did gain a few potential playmakers in the draft that might tilt this season more in their favor and perhaps this time they can make that final push.”
3. Kansas City Coyotes 8-6: Despite having the third best record on the season, the Coyotes never truly felt like a threat to the guys at the top of the standings. They had an average offense while manning one of the worst defenses in the DSFL. There simply isn’t enough talent to go around sometimes, so Kansas City seemed to make a concentrated effort to strengthen the defensive side of the ball and improve there. Maybe these guys can make this defense elite and the Coyotes can make a push for the Ultimini.
4. San Antonio Marshals 7-7: Last season the Marshals were the quintessential middle of the pack team. Average at everything to the point they even had the most average ending record you could manage. San Antonio made some moves to strengthen their roster in this draft, but I don’t think it will be enough to pull them from average to champions. They may be a solid roster overall this season though.
5. Norfolk Seawolves 2-12: Norfolk is one of the new expansion teams and as such was unquestionably one of the worst teams in the DSFL. There really weren’t any highlights to speak of. I put them above Palm Beach only because I feel like their draft was a little more solid. They picked up some essential pieces on defense, a star studded offensive line, a fantastic halfback, and they just got a QB off of waivers. This team has a lot of upside and might surprise people.
6. Palm Beach Solar Bears 2-12: To put it lightly, this team was abysmal last season. They ranked dead last in points allowed and ended the season on a massive loss streak. As one of the two expansion teams, they’re going to have to rely on their draft to carry them. I think they picked up some great guys, I’m just not positive on if they can have enough impact to make this team much better than it was last season.”
Closing
“I thank all of you folks at home for watching this segment. In the future we hope to bring you much, much more but we were limited on what we could provide here. I look forward to hearing from you guys and hope you tune in again. This has been Channel 18 news reporting, Bjørn Ironside signing off.”
