Ladies and gentleman, welcome again to ESPNSFL. My name is Zerin Nandrews and this is episode number 7 of our “Thoroughfare to Glory” (TTG) saga, bringing you the life of Season 18 QB prospect, the “Portuguese Phenom”, Jay “Football” Cue.
Another 2 games, another 2 wins for the Portland Pythons, making it a perfect one with 4 wins in 4 games. And our star numbers were pretty good too on Thursday: 388 passing yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT, for a rating of 93. Jay Cue is now second in the League in Passing yards with nearly 2000yds and the league leader in Passing TDs, with 19. He is now only 3 short of the record set 3 seasons ago by Franklin Armstrong. Will this week games see Jay Cue setting his first DSFL record?
Dirk travelled to Portland, Oregon to catch up with Jay, get his thoughts on these 2 games, his possible record and the playoff picture.
Dirk – Hello Jay, good to see you again.
Jay – Hey Dirk, it’s nice to have you guys here.
Dirk – So, another very good week for you and the Pythons.
Jay – It really was Dirk, these types of weeks are what we work for every day: 4 games, 100% win record, still first in the DSFL, fighting for the home field advantage on the playoffs. The team is confident, working in practice like we should, so no complaints here.
Dirk – But you will be facing the Tijuana Luchadores next Tuesday, a team that beat you before, and the winner of the game will have HFA in the playoff run. Are you nervous?
Jay – I have just the right amount of nervousness, the one that keeps me on my toes and completely focused on the game and my job. And my job is to take the team through the field to get points. I honestly can’t wait to square off against the Tijuana defense. Last time I had a very good game, 3TDs and no INTs, but unfortunately we still lost. But this time they are playing at the Pythons Pit, so we are very confident we can win and settle the regular season top spot.
Dirk – And with 19TD passes this season, you are really really close to beat the record.
Jay – It is always a good thing when you play to your abilities and get numbers that get you close to records. And there is nothing better than to beat records on important matches. But even if I do not make it, we still need to come on the other side with a win, which is the most important thing.
Dirk – Was that something that you had in mind when the season started?
Jay – Not really, no Dirk. I knew that Armstrong had put up great numbers. But records exist to be broken.
Dirk – And with your playoff spot already guaranteed, are you guys hoping to go all the way and get that Ultimini back to Portland?
Jay – That is indeed the main goal. But now we only have Tijuana on our minds.
Dirk – We have definitely been watching your great performances on the field, which brought up some rumors about you possible clinching the MVP Award in the DSFL. Do you feel you can do it?
Jay – It is a great honor to be even considered for that. But I’m only focused on helping the Pythons every game. And with the team performing well, the numbers add up effortlessly. But there are some other candidates putting up amazing numbers as well so, we have to wait and see.
Dirk – Last question Jay, I know you want to go and get some practice reps in, but we just can’t forget the draft is right around the corner. With a possible MVP award, a playoff run, do you feel you can be drafted high overall?
Jay – I honestly do not think I will leave the board before late 2nd/early 3rd round, might even be sitting in the green room for a later round than that. I know NSFL teams are not QB needy right now, even though some of the greats are already regressing, but the lack of GM contacts makes me believe that they have other needs they want filled first. No hard feelings, I knew that when I came into the league, but whoever gets me should know that this season is not a fluke or beginners luck. I intend to spend another 2 seasons with the Pythons, racking up my numbers, and then to go into the NSFL completely prepared to be an addition to the team. And, like I said on twitter, 9 teams will be regretting their decision in a few seasons time. But they have been warned for sure, I can be an once in a lifetime talent.
Dirk – Thanks for your time Jay, we will be back next week to check if the Pythons made it against Tijuana and got home field advantage for the playoffs.
Jay – Looking forward to it Dirk, do not forget to put in a good word for me if you talk to any GM.
And this is all the time we have for today, stay tuned for more interviews and information on our TTG. This was Zerin Nandrews, for ESPNSFL at the Portland Pythons training facility, goodbye, see you next time.
