Running Back, Jed Podolak, and his user, KC15, have joined the NSFL. This is after many urgings from KC’s league mates in the PBE. KC just wasn’t sure that he wanted to add another league, but since so many of his friends seemed to think it was great fun, he decided to give it a try.
I just thought while it was so fresh – just created only last night – it might be valuable to go beyond the rookie survey in giving my first impressions of the league based almost solely on how it is to just begin looking at the site and joining in the chat on discord.
First of all – friendly bunch! I know from plenty of sim league experience that there is a fair amount of ridiculously overblown drama in every league or online experience of any kind. I’ve gotten pretty good at ignoring most of that as otherwise it would spoil my fun and I’m not about to let a foolish drama queen or king ruin something for me that I’ve grown to love so much.
But right away, there were people there welcoming me in and showing me the ropes. It’s true that I was basically followed into the discord from a discussion in the PBE discord, but it wasn’t just a few guys from the PBE who already knew me. Rookie Mentors, GMs and regular users were quick to answer my questions, volunteered build help for RB, if needed, and generally just made me feel at home with light-hearted banter about the league, the NFL, etc.
Since then, I’ve been contacted by two GMs of DSFL teams to ask about my experience and express some interest in picking Podolak up off waivers and to gauge my interest in coming to their team. That’s fast work!
And of course, @Frick_Nasty in particular has been super helpful. He took his recruiting of me seriously and helped me set up a solid initial build for my RB.
Discord was easy to navigate as it usually is, but it was nice to get set up immediately with invites to both the general and rookie discords and to find the help channels so easy to find.
The website, as in all sim leagues, can be a bit overwhelming. Not as much when you’ve been in several sim leagues already – including the PBE an SHL – which are set up pretty similarly, but I always wonder why some of the headings aren’t a little easier for people starting out.
For example, what is a Locker Room in a sim league and why would anyone want to go there? Why are Media, Graphics, and Twitter under Community instead of under some heading like “Making Money in the NSFL”. What is “Game Pass” and what is an “Index”? I know these now from being in other leagues, but it would be nice to consider the first time sim leaguer. Here’s my favorite out of place filing, however. Player Retirement is under “Getting Started”. lol
Some things are labeled fine, but could use a descriptor. For example: Bank – Post Purchases and Check Account Balances.
I was also glad to hear about a development league. I think any league needs somewhere that new people can make a difference a little earlier on and don’t have to compete with veterans who already have 1000 TPE or more.
I like the spread of TPE earning opportunities with an extra PT just for the weekend. Puts a little urgency into getting something done.
Well, those are a few first impressions of the league. Overall, I’m just really excited to get going! Where will Jed Podolak land to start his charge to a 1,000 yard season?
