Week 6 of the 2019 NFL season is in the books. Can you believe we are already approaching the halfway point in the season? I feel like it was just Week 1 yesterday. The front runners in each conference are starting to become more apparent at this point, but of course a lot of football is still to be played and anything can happen in the NFL.
In the NFC I see the Saints, Packers, 49ers, and Seahawks as the top teams. There are other teams that could move up to front runner status in the NFC like the Panthers and the rest of the NFC North, but at this time that’s the way I see it. The Rams have lost 3 in a row now and just traded away their future for Jalen Ramsey. It seems like a desperate move for a team that’s at best 3rd in their division. We’ll see if this is the move that sparks the Rams to turn things around after a rocky start.
In the AFC you’ve got the Patriots and then everybody else. It really feels like that currently. Their defense is extremely impressive, and they can score points on offense when they need to. The Chiefs, Texans, Ravens, and Bills seem like the other AFC front runners at the moment, but I don’t think any of them will really compete with the Patriots.
It’s interesting how different the NFC and AFC seem to be this year. There are at least 8 teams I wouldn’t be too surprised to see in the NFC Championship game. In the AFC I would be surprised if anyone but the Patriots is playing in the Super Bowl.
Bucs over Panthers
The Panthers played in their first ever London game and it went really well. Jameis Winston had one of his multiple turnover games that he is famous for. He threw 5 interceptions and fumbled twice losing the ball once. The Bucs defense actually did a good job at bottling up Christian McCaffrey and kept the game relatively close despite all the turnovers. Kyle Allen is now 4-0 this season as a starter and 5-0 in his career. He became the first NFL quarterback to ever start his career 5-0 with no interceptions. A lot of the media has been trying to make a controversy about what will happen with Cam Newton once he is healthy, but everyone in the Panthers organization as well as true fans know that once Cam is back to 100% the job is his. Kyle Allen has proven to be a dependable backup, especially for a team like the Panthers that has someone like Christian McCaffrey to rely on for offensive production as well as a great defense. He protects the ball and doesn’t panic under pressure, but he also mostly sticks with his first read and then either throws it away or dumps it off to McCaffrey. Cam coming back in the next few weeks fully healthy would be huge for a team that’s getting ready to face a lot of tough opponents. After the bye this week they have the 49ers, Packers, and Saints as 3 of the next 5 opponents and they end the season with Seahawks, Colts, and Saints. My prediction is you’ll see Kyle Allen for 2 more games before Cam is back starting. For Tampa, they are at the Titans and then at the Seahawks after the bye before finally returning home in what will end up being an almost 2 month gap between true home games. I’d be pissed if I were a Bucs fan. They might still be able to salvage their season, but I don’t see them finishing any better than 8-8, which won’t be good enough for a wild card berth.
The Otters (Panthers) swept the Copperheads (Bucs) in NSFL Season 17. That should have been the case this season with the Panthers, but we gave the game away on Thursday night in week 2 when Cam was trying to play hurt. Hopefully that loss doesn’t come back to haunt the Panthers as they try and make the playoffs.
Seahawks over Browns
This was a close game where the Browns took an early lead and then the Seahawks were able to come back and then the second half was kind of back and forth. Both teams had success running the ball as both Chris Carson and Nick Chubb went for over 120 yards on 20+ carries. The biggest difference in this game was the turnovers. Baker Mayfield threw 3 interceptions, which is something you can’t do against a good team like the Seahawks. Especially because Russell Wilson is very good at not turning the ball over. The Seahawks are now an impressive 5-1 and face the Ravens in Seattle next week. The Seahawks have always played significantly better at home than on the road, and I imagine their defense will be much better against Baltimore than it was in Cleveland. The Browns fall to 2-4, and for most teams I would say they don’t really have a shot at the playoffs at this point, but looking at the Browns schedule they still have the Bengals twice, the Steelers twice, the Cardinals, the Dolphins, and the Broncos on their schedule. That’s 7 games they should win. Getting to 10 wins seems like a possibility still for the Browns, and that might be enough to win the division. Of course there is also a distinct possibility that they lose a couple of those 7 games and all three of the other games and that would put them at 7-9, which would be a major disappointment for a fan base that thought they may finally make the playoffs again.
The Butchers (Seahawks) and Otters (Browns) faced off in a close matchup at the end of season 17, but the Otters won in that matchup.
Chiefs over Texans
The Chiefs have now lost two games in a row. Pretty surprising considering the amount of people that thought they would be undefeated when they face the Patriots later this season. The Chiefs running game was basically nonexistent in this game, which forced Mahomes to pass the ball 35 times, and while that shouldn’t be a problem the Chiefs definitely have more success when they have a more balanced offensive attack. The return of Tyreek Hill helped the passing game as he was 5 for 80 and 2 touchdowns. Mahomes did turn the ball over twice. The Chiefs are definitely missing starting tackle Eric Fisher. That will simultaneously boost their run game and help give Mahomes more time in the passing game. The Chiefs defense is what it is at this point. They are going to give up 30+ points in most of their games, which will be an issue come playoff time. The Chiefs have a Thursday night matchup this week against the Broncos. If the Von Miller can get to Mahomes they might be able to make this an interesting game. The Texans ran almost double to amount of plays that the Chiefs did at 83 to 47. They did the same thing the Colts did and controlled time of possession. The Texans travel to Indianapolis next week in a big matchup against the two teams that have beaten the Chiefs. The Colts coming off the bye and at home have a slight advantage, but I think this will be a close one.
The Outlaws were good enough last season to get my comparison from both of these teams. That happens sometimes.
Redskins over Dolphins
The battle of two winless teams didn’t disappoint. The Dolphins scored a touchdown at the very end of the fourth quarter and instead of kicking the extra point to tie they went for two. The two point conversion attempt was one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen and the Dolphins maintained their losing streak, and I think they did it on purpose which isn’t really that surprising. There isn’t much to say other than these two teams both suck and I don’t think either will reach 3 wins on the season. The Dolphins probably won’t win any games to be honest. Next week the Redskins host the undefeated 49ers and they will probably get blown out in that one. Miami goes to Buffalo who should have Josh Allen back and ready to role over their division rival.
I compared the Redskins to the Yeti, and the Dolphins to the Solar Bears. Teams that are in different leagues unfortunately. If the Dolphins were a NSFL team who would they be? I have no idea who the worst team in the NSFL is? None of the teams are that bad.
Eagles over Vikings
The Vikings dominated the Eagles in a 38 to 20 win. I did not see this one coming at all. I thought the Eagles run defense would force Cousins to pass the ball and he wouldn’t look good doing it. I was very wrong about that. Cousins ended up with over 300 yards passing and 4 passing touchdowns. 3 of which went to Diggs. The Vikings seem to be a completely different team when playing at home versus on the road. They seem like a prime candidate to sneak into the playoffs and then lose on the road in the wildcard round. The Vikings didn’t have as much success running the ball in this game as they have in other games this season, but the emergence of a high powered passing attack made that a mute point. If the offense can find a way to have success from both sides of the ball in the same game this team might challenge the Packers for the division title. Minnesota travels to Detroit to play the division rival Lions this week. A big game that could either keep them on the heels of the Packers or distance the Packers lead on the division even further. The Eagles tried to rely on Carson Wentz’s arm in this game as the Vikings run defense made it hard to get anywhere on the ground, but it didn’t work out as well for the Eagles. Desean Jackson should be back soon, and that will definitely help their passing attack. They travel to Dallas this week to face off against division rival Cowboys in a game to determine who is the leader of the not very good NFC East.
The Wraiths (Eagles) beat the Sabercats (Vikings) in their lone season 17 matchup. The opposite happened here.
Saints over Jaguars
The Saints beat the Jaguars in a mostly defensive battle that only had one touchdown scored in the entire game. The game was 6 all at the start of the fourth quarter and the Saints were able to score on a pass from Bridgewater to Cook, which ended up being the last score of the game. The Saints defense held the Jaguars offense in check in all facets. Minshew was under 50% completion rate on the day, and Fournette was 20 for 72 on the ground. The Saints couldn’t get anything going on offense either, but ended up winning anyway. At 5-1 the Saints are definitely one of the top teams in the NFC even without future hall of fame quarterback Drew Brees. They should be even better when he comes back in a few weeks. They have another tough defensive battle on the road in Chicago this week, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a similar score as this game. The Jaguars fall to 2-4 in a top heavy division, but they do have the Bengals on the road next week, so that’s a chance to right the ship. Gardner Minshew has been pretty good, but this team will definitely be better once Nick Foles is able to come back. Unfortunately, it might be too late to salvage the season at that point.
The Wraiths (Saints) and Yeti (Jags) faced off twice in season 17 and split their matchups. I don’t think the Saints would lose to the Jags this year without some serious defensive injuries or a ton of luck.
Ravens over Bengals
The Bengals only lost this game by 6 points. I think that says more about the Ravens than it does the Bengals. Lamar Jackson ended up with 33 pass attempts and also lead the team in rush attempts. He eclipsed both 200 yards passing and 150 rushing yards. In spite of all that the Ravens only managed to score 23 points against the winless Bengals. The Ravens have a much tougher test next week as they travel to Seattle to take on the 5-1 Seahawks. I don’t think the Seahawks defense will allow Jackson to run rampant in this game. The Ravens defense held the Bengals rushing game in check only allowed 33 yards on 14 carries. The thing that surprises me is they only produced 2 sacks on the day when Dalton passed the ball 39 times. They need to be able to get to the quarterback more if they want to beat a team like the Seahawks. Andy Dalton continues to be one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league. To be fair, he hasn’t had his top receiver AJ Green all season, but I still think he is playing his last season as a starting quarterback in the NFL. The Bengals will be in prime draft position to take one of the top quarterbacks next year and that will be it for Andy Dalton probably. The Bengals host the Jacksonville Jaguars this week, and I think they’ll struggle on offense again even with Jalen Ramsey being traded away to the Rams. Ramsey probably wouldn’t have played in this game anyway as he’s been dealing with a back injury. It will be interesting to see if the Bengals have more success once AJ Green returns from injury, but they will have to wait at least another week for his return.
I compared the Bengals to a DSFL as they are truly awful, and the Ravens to the Butchers, so not a way to compare this one, but until proven otherwise the Bengals are competing with the Dolphins and Redskins for worst team in the league.
Rams over 49ers
A completely dominant performance by the 49ers gave the Rams their 3rd straight loss as they stay undefeated. Jared Goff ended up with only 78 yards passing on the day as the 49ers defense only gave up 7 points to a Rams team that was almost unstoppable last season. The Rams made a desperate move to save their season this week by trading away cornerback Marcus Peters and trading away two first round picks for Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey. I honestly think this is a terrible decision for the Rams, but only time will tell. The Rams travel to Atlanta to play a Falcons team that can’t stop anything, so that should help them get back on track, but I don’t think it will matter as the Rams don’t look like they will be able to compete with the two top teams in their division. The 49ers travel to DC to take on the awful Redskins in a game that shouldn’t give them much trouble. The 49ers look like one of the top teams in the NFL right now on both sides of the ball. If Garoppolo can stay healthy I think this team has a shot to go far in the playoffs.
I was definitely wrong about the 49ers when I compared them to the Liberty and same goes for the Rams compared to the Wraiths. Should be swapped. The Wraiths swept the Liberty last season. I think the 49ers will sweep the Rams, so I was wrong about that comp.
Falcons over Cardinals
The Falcons can’t even win a game against the Cardinals, a team with a rookie quarterback and a mediocre defense. Matt Ryan was 30 for 36 with 356 yards and 4 touchdowns, and yet somehow the Falcons still lost 34 to 33. The Falcons fall to 1-5 and it would take a miracle for them to go on a win streak and make the playoffs. Their season is basically done after only 6 weeks, which to me is very surprising. I thought they would have a bounce back year and be a strong possible wild card team. Now it looks like Dan Quinn could be fired only a few seasons removed from their 2016 Super Bowl run. What a shocking turn of events. They host the Rams this week, as I mentioned above, and I don’t see anyway they stop the Rams offense from scoring 30+ even with all the issues they are having. As for the Cardinals, I’m actually pretty impressed with how they’ve looked so far this season. They won’t be making the playoffs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a big win or two against a quality team in the playoff hunt. They go to New York this week in a matchup of rookie quarterbacks. It will be interesting to see how they fare against another team in a similar talent level.
I compared the Cardinals to a DSFL team and the Falcons to the Outlaws. That was obviously wrong. Falcons are more like the Sabercats this season. Cardinals are more like the Yeti.
Broncos over Titans
The Broncos got their second win of the season as they shut out the Titans in Denver. The Titans have been so bad on offense that they are now benching Marcus Mariota in favor of Dolphins reject Ryan Tannehill. The Titans couldn’t get the run game going as Henry ended up at less than 2 yards a carry. Mariota was 7 for 18 with 63 yards and 2 interceptions before getting benched for Tannehill. Tannehill actually had decent numbers completing 13 for 16, but I don’t think it will make much of a difference for the outcome of the season. The Broncos didn’t really have a great game either, but the Titans were simply awful. The Broncos are playing the Chiefs on Thursday Night as I type this. I predicted the Chiefs to win that game, but the Broncos may have a chance as Patrick Mahomes got hurt and is out the entire second half. The Broncos do best when they can hand the ball to either Lindsay or Freeman and pound the rock on the ground. Joe Flacco is not a quarterback that will win you games passing the ball 40+ times a game, so they better hope they can establish the run against division rival Chiefs. The Titans host the Chargers in a game the Chargers desperately need after starting off the season much worse than anyone expected. The Titans will need to have success running the ball if they want to beat the Chargers, but to do that Ryan Tannehill will need to show he can make the throws necessary to open up the rushing lanes.
The Coyotes (Broncos) swept the Seawolves (Titans) in season 17. Seems like a pretty fair assessment for once.
Cowboys over Jets
I did not see this one coming at all, but the Jets took a big 21-6 lead into the half and only needed to score 3 points in the second half to secure victory. The Cowboys are now 3-3 after an impressive start to the season. Sam Darnold returned to action for the first time since getting mono and looked pretty good throwing for 338 yards and two touchdowns. Robby Anderson had a big day with 5 receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys settled for field goals 5 times in this game. That’s the big difference in this game. They just couldn’t finish when they got into the redzone. The Cowboys have a big home game against the Eagles this week that will give the winner the leg up in the NFC East race. With the way both teams have looked recently I’m not at all sure who will come away victorious. The Jets host the Patriots on Monday night this week. If they want any chance of making a comeback on their season they need to win that game.
The Copperheads (Cowboys) and Liberty (Jets) faced off once in season 17 and the Liberty came away victorious, which is what happened here.
Chargers over Steelers
The Chargers are definitely one of the most disappointing teams so far this season. After a great season last year where they went 12-4 they don’t look like that great team at all. They have already matched their loss total from 2018 in just 6 weeks. They gave up 24 points to the Steelers lead by their 3rd string quarterback. They didn’t even manage to score any points until the 4th quarter. As I mentioned above the Chargers travel to Nashville to take on the Titans this week in a game that could practically end their season if they lose it. The Steelers defense has been great this year, but due to their awful offense they’ve only managed to win 2 games. At this point I don’t see the Chargers making the playoffs without a big win streak and multiple division victories.
The Sabercats (Steelers) lost to the Butchers (Chargers) last season. Probably the wrong comp for the Chargers.
Packers over Lions
This game will be remembered for the phantom no hands to the face call that really helped keep the Packers in this game. I’m impressed with what I’ve seen so far from the Lions. They are 2-2-1 on the season and definitely have what it takes to compete in the NFC North. They host another division rival this coming week in the Minnesota Vikings. A game they really need to win to stay in the division race. The Packers have looked like a completely new team this year. The defense actually makes stops and the offense runs the ball quite a lot. Not having to rely on Aaron Rodgers to do everything has been a big key to their success so far. They host the surprisingly good Raiders in a game they should win, but they can’t sleep on the Raiders or they will end up with a loss they shouldn’t have.
The Hawks (Packers) and Yeti (Lions) played twice in season 17 with the Hawks taking both games. It will be interesting to see if the Packers can also sweep the Lions, but I doubt it.
There’s my recap of Week 6 of the NFL. I also decided starting last week to look into the teams future opponents and see how I think they will fare. If you are wondering I counted up my picks for the season so far and I am a measly 50-42. Here’s my Week 7 picks.
Chiefs over Broncos – This game is currently going, but I made this pick beforehand. Promise.
Rams over Falcons
Bills over Dolphins
Jaguars over Bengals
Lions over Vikings
Packers over Raiders
Colts over Texans
Giants over Cardinals
49ers over Redskins
Chargers over Titans
Saints over Bears
Seahawks over Ravens
Cowboys over Eagles
Patriots over Jets
