Ladies and gentleman, welcome again to ESPNSFL. My name is Zerin Nandrews and this is episode number 14 of our “Thoroughfare to Glory” (TTG) saga, bringing you the life of Season 18 QB prospect, the “Portuguese Phenom”, Jay “Football” Cue.
Another season is upon us and it will be the final one in the DSFL for Jay Cue. Next season he will play in the big leagues, leading the Arizona Outlaws, trying to fill the shoes, the big shoes, that Andrew Reese will leave in the locker room. After 3 years, he will have to travel 1300 miles southeast of Portland, and begin a new life in Arizona. Is he thinking about that already? Or is he still completely focused on defending the Ultimini title won in Season 18?
We caught up with Jay in the University of Oregon, home of the Oregon Ducks, where he is practicing and getting fit for the season ahead.
Dirk - Hey again Jay, thanks for having us during the off season.
Jay - No problem Dirk, i can use this time to have a little rest, after this is back to the field and gym to get those gainz.
Dirk - Good to see you working out. So, after another great season, you finally got the Ultimini trophy with the Pythons. How does it feel to bring silverware to Portland?
Jay - It feels great as you would expect Dirk. My first season with the Pythons left a sour taste in my mouth, on our mouths, as we felt we should have won the Ultimini. Unfortunately we were not on our best game as we should, and lost by one point. So, after a great season, getting the number 1 seed and home field advantage, in the end what did we have to show for it? Zero. Nada. Zilch. Niente. But we knew that we had the ability to change that next time. Great offense, great defense, great game plan. And it showed. Credit to the Marshalls, they got to the final game after a major upset in the conference championship, but this was our year.
Dirk - Personally, joint DSFL MVP after an MVP award on your first season, QBOTY 2 years in a row and you had great numbers again, after what we might consider a slow start to the season. Did you change anything on your game to perform up to your high standards?
Jay - Not really Dirk. early in the season we know that the team is not totally oiled up. The offense struggles, the defense is still finding the best way to deal with the opposing offenses, rookies are still trying to learn how to tie their shoes and Epstein did not kill himself. Things that are known by everyone. But being the second season for some of the players, we tried to get the most inexperienced players to get up to par on the game as quickly as possible, and that is why we managed to finish the season on a high note, improving stuff in every game we played. And when this happens, it is easy for the QB to rack up the numbers. When WRs get open for easy throws, when the DL opens up acres of space for me to scramble, when the RB blocks a corner blitz... It is easy to get good plays.
Dirk - What about this season, any objectives? How do you find the motivation to play again in the DSFL while looking at S18 players that are now balling in the NSFL and getting Ultimus titles and individual awards?
Jay - It is obviously hard on morale to see players get to the NSFL after 1 season and being an important part of rosters there. Like I said before, getting a lot of new players into the team every season, teaching them the ropes, spending time with them to see them leave after one season and restarting the process again takes time and it is difficult. Still, knew the work conditions when i signed up for this and now I have to live with that. But yeah, i have to say that on one hand i definitely still want titles and to beat records. On the other hand i fell like I have nothing else to prove to the league and want to play in the NSFL as soon as possible. But that geeser Reese can still ball, so I have to wait another season.
Dirk - So, in a few words, objectives for this DSFL season, your last?
Jay - Ultimini trophy, DSFL MVP, QBOTY, leading passer, at least 23 regular season passing TDs and less than 7 INTs. And I want more than 235yds and 2 rushing TD's. Small stuff if you really look into it.
Dirk - Well, that would make it as the best season ever by a QB in the DSFL.
Jay - Why would i have as an objective to play at the same level as others who played before?
Dirk - Well, that makes sense. Talking about next season, how do you feel it is going to be for you?
Jay - I try to get as much contact with the Outlaws as possible. I know their playbook by heart now and the GM's show up at the Pythons games to get tape and give me some pointers. So i feel i can start strong next season for them. They have some young players ready to play as well, so i am looking forward to wearing the Outlaws shirt for a long time.
Dirk - Well Jay, thanks a lot for your time, we wish you good luck for the upcoming season and we will talk again soon.
Jay - Thanks Dirk, see you next time.
And this is all the time we have for today, stay tuned for more interviews and information on our TTG. This was Zerin Nandrews, for ESPNSFL at the Portland Pythons training facility, goodbye, see you next time.
