Chris Kross was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Elen and Mike Kross. He has one older and one younger sister so being not only the middle child but also the only boy made home life a little more difficult. His father Mike was a college basketball star for The University of Hawaii and his mother was on the track team so sports was in his blood. From a young age his father always pushed basketball on him and wanted him to follow in his footsteps and become a great basketball star.
In elementary he would often go to basketball camps his father would sign him up for. He also ended up getting his first taste of football when he was signed up for his local pee wee football team. His pee wee coach knew Chris was a basketball star in the making so he used those skills Chris learned from basketball and applied it to football. He taught him the basics of being a wide receiver and that all he needed to do was jump high, catch the ball and run to the endzone. With his natural athleticism he ended up being great even for his first year trying. Even though his father always pushed basketball he instantly fell in love with football because there was a lot less pressure and he could play a lot more freely.
Fast forward to middle school and Chris is still a two sport athlete playing basketball and football but the time he spent at basketball camps was now being split between both of the sports. One summer while at football camp he got a call that he needed to come back home immediately. His aunt drove down to pick him up but instead of heading home he noticed they were headed in a different direction. They arrived at their destination, the hospital. Before they got out of the car his aunt told him the bad news "your father was in an accident and doesn't look to be doing to well. Your mother and sisters are fine and are in the room with him waiting for you." He quickly rushed to the room his father was in only to see his mother and sisters in tears and his fathers eyes closed like he was in a deep sleep. A week later they had their fathers funeral and seeing his father being lowered to the ground he had decided that to honor him he would focus solely on basketball and follow in his footsteps.
His freshman year of high school all the football camps stopped and he didn't even join the junior varsity football team. He had his focus only on basketball. He ended up being the only freshman selected to the varsity basketball team and earned himself a starting spot. This was nearly unheard of as the high school he attended was know to be a top tier school in sports for Hawaii. This was validation that he made the right choice in putting all his efforts into basketball. Although he was doing so well with basketball he really missed the true sport he loved, football.
Sophomore year of high school since he did so well his freshman year in basketball he decided it wouldn't hurt if he tried out football too. They were different seasons and it wouldn't cut into his time he spent on basketball. He tried out for the football team and he stood out. His coached asked why he didn't try out last year and he told him that he was a basketball first player. He was initially tried as a backup quarterback due to his natural athleticism but it wasn't long before he was put into his true position, wide receiver. He made a big impact his first year leading his team in receiving and becoming the number one option on the team. When basketball season came around he continued to be a starter for the team and it seemed like he hasn't missed a beat even though he played football this year also.
His junior year is when things started to get hard. He was named as one of the captains of the football team and had to perform like one. He put up huge numbers and showed why he deserved to be captain. The real trouble came with his grades. Trying to get to the highest level doing two sports had left him with little time to focus on school and it showed on his report cards. He had multiple D's and the counselor called in his mother to try to get him back on track. Later that year when basketball season came around he didn't perform up to his usual standards. Focusing hard to get his grades back up led to him not being able to focus as much as he would like on basketball. At this point he knew he had to make a decision.
His senior year he was once again named a captain of the football team but he was also named captain of the basketball team. This made him quite torn on which sport he should choose so he ended up playing both again. He spent countless late nights trying to keep his grades up and it showed as on the football field and the basketball court he looked slower than normal. He didn't put up huge numbers in football like he did the year before and his basketball skills seemed to stagnate. He still had decent seasons and with his grades improving he ended up earning scholarships for both basketball and football. He finally had to truly choose one sport and the sport he chose was football. Instead of going to a big school to play he still wanted to honor his father so he took the scholarship to his fathers alma mater The University of Hawaii.
Kross's freshman year of college started a little rough for him. He didn't break into the starting roster like he hoped he would and his first two games were spent on the bench. It wasn't until the second quarter of his third game that an opportunity for him to get on the field arose. One of the starting receivers went down with an injury and Kross was thrust into the action. He did not let this opportunity pass him by as he caught two game changing touchdowns and earned the game ball for himself in his first game playing. After that he took over a starting role and continued to have a solid first year.
There was a lot of hope for Kross heading into his sophomore year of college. He was expected to have a breakout season and be the number one option on his team going forward. Unfortunately his quaterback of the previous year graduated and he didn't form quite the same connection with his new qb. He ended up regressing from his freshman year and there was a lot of talk going around if he had already reached his peak and if he would be good enough to make it in the DSFL. During the off-season he went through a lot of workouts and he and his current quarterback did a lot of things together to try and build good chemistry.
His junior year the hard work all came together. He and his quarterback looked to be firing on all cylinders now and both had a huge breakout season. Kross ended up surpassing the high expectations that were already set for him and breaking a few records along the way. He led the conference in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He also led the entire nation in receiving yards breaking the previous record. He was in the running to win the Heisman a feat that not many receivers accomplish but finished in second in the voting. The team also managed to make it into the College Football Playoffs but ended up losing in the first round to a stout Alabama team. There was a lot of talk if he would enter the draft after his junior year but he announced that he would be returning and playing another year stating he wants to win a championship with this team.
His senior year came and the Rainbow Warriors started off hot. Kross didn't have as crazy of numbers as he did the year before but, he led his team to an undefeated season and ranked number 2 in the nation only behind the Alabama team that beat them the year before. The first round of the playoffs they went up against a tough Clemson team but pulled out a big win. In the finals they met up with the team that took them out the year before, Alabama. This time Kross would get his revenge he put up 142 receiving yards and a monster 3 touchdowns to win the championship and was named MVP. Having brought a championship to not just his team but to his fathers alma mater during the MVP interview he ended up in tears of joy. He is now being scouted as a top wide receiver in his class and hopes to continue his legacy in the DSFL.
