The first week of sims is over with in DSFL and Kansas City couldn’t wait to get back on to the field in the first season back as a bot team. This week saw our Coyotes takes on the Portland Pythons at home for week 1 followed by a trip east to Myrtle Beach to take on the Buccaneers. Both games proved to be a pair of tough outcomes – with a nailbiter loss to the Pythons 24-23 before losing a grinder vs the Buccaneers 9-7.
24-23 Loss vs Pythons: A tough game to swallow. A pick six and a fumble recovered for a touchdown gave the Pythons 14 free points. Portland struggled on third downs, going 1/10. Their defense came ready to play and Koda Adok had a monster game with an interception in the final minute to help put the Coyotes away as well as some strong running by Logan Noble Jr throughout the game.
9-7 Loss at Buccaneers: Both teams did a good job keeping each other off the board. The Coyotes contained Sarvepally and didn’t allow him to break off a big run like the one he had vs the Seawolves. Lots of stalled drives and three and outs made this game a snoozer for those that like a lot of big time offense. A final moment drive almost allowed the chance for a game winning field goal but unfortunately there was not enough time left on the clock to come out ahead.
Kansas City currently ends the week 5th in power rankings at .77. The sit at 3rd in passing yards and rushing yards.
Lets take a look around the team to see the players did.
QB Zero-Two: Zero had a rough first outing for the home opener against the Pythons. They went 16/31 for 115 yards and a touchdown but they had two interceptions, with the second being a game ending interception within the Pythons 20 to seal the deal for the Coyotes. Game 2 vs Myrtle Beach was a strong bounce back performance as Zero completed 22/36 passes for 167 yards and while they didn’t have any touchdowns, they also did not turn the ball over and kept the Coyotes in the ballgame.
RB Andrew Nova: Nova had 90 yards on 18 carries in game 1 for a 5-yard average. This is good but a pivotal fumble in the opening moments of the third quarter was scooped and scored to give Portland 7 points. Determined to bounceback, Nova had another 5 yard average performance, taking the ball for 60 yards on 12 carries.
WR Chris Kross: Cross had a strong first game grabbing 4 receptions for 35 yards including a 16 yard reception and their first touchdown reception of the season. The second game didn’t have any touchdown receptions but Kross put up a respectable 4 reception performance for 41 yards.
WR Red Arrow: No passes connected with Arrow in game 1, who had a quiet day in his first career performance in DSFL. His hands came to life vs Myrtle Beach as they caught 4 passes for 38 yards including a 19 yard pass during the game.
DE Chip Otle: Chip couldn’t get his hands much on the ball carrier vs the Pythons, registering just one tackle (although it was for a loss). The second game saw a more active performance as they registered their second tackle for loss on the season to highlight a 3 tackle day for the young defensive end.
LB Douglas Quaid: Douglas had a very active game vs the Pythons. He amassed 9 tackles and had his first forced fumble on the season, which at the time seemed to have won the game for the Coyotes. If the first games stat line looked good, the second was even better. 18 tackles and 1 TFL was the total for Quaid, who seems to be a dominant force in the secondary so far this season.
S Jon Bois: Jon Bois totaled for 5 tackles over the pair of games. No turnovers for the rookie Safety, but he played his part in coverage and didn’t allow too many big time catches on his watch.
K Lefty Louis: Louis was 3-4 in game 1, missing the tying PAT but making an impressive far field goal to get the team closer into the game. He also punted 6 times for an average of 41.3 yards. Game two he went 1-2, making the XP but missing a 51 yarder in the third. He punted 9 times for an average of 43.1 yards. A solid set of games for the rookie kicker.
RB Rando Cardrissian: Rando Cardrissian had a strong two weeks. In game 1, Rando ran the ball 18 times for 103 yards and a 5.7 average. This game also featured touchdowns 1 and 2 on the year for him. He also caught the ball 3 times for 23 yards to give him 126 yards of total offense on the day. In game two he had 17 carries for 69 yards and his 3rd touchdown on the season, as well as two receptions for 7 yards. The second game was not as bright as the first for Rando but to have almost 200 yards of total offense in your first two games is a sign of good things to come.
TE Tree Gelbman: Tree had 4 pancakes and became sort of a blocking beast in game one. To match up with it they also had 5 receptions for 36 yards. No pancakes for Tree in game 2 and the reception count was 3 receptions for 27 yards. Tree seems to be the jack of all trades piece in the offense as of now and could be a big key for team success in the near future.
DT Riles McTackle: A quiet set of games for Riles. One tackle over two games though that one tackle was a big time sack on 2nd and 10 in the second quarter vs the Pythons to stall what looked to be a sure fire scoring drive.
CB Jeremy Quellers: Quellers had a great set of games. In game 1, they had 3 tackles and two passes broken up. In game 2, Quellers had three tackles once again on top of two more defended passes and an interception for his first on the season.
TE Shakir Ahmed: Ahmed had just as prodigious of a blocking stat line in game 1 as his teammate Gelbman did. 5 pancakes on Python defenders as well as 3 receptions for 21 yards on the game. Ahmed had another pancake in week 2 vs the Buccaneers and had a fantastic day receiving wise. They caught 8 passes for 51 yards. Look for Ahmed and Gelbman to be a fearsome duo this season.
S Rusty Shackleford: Shackleford had 9 tackles over two games in his efforts for the Coyotes. A bit more passes coming his way while he was on the field than Bois got but he held his own quite well.
