Hello! Agent Tesla here with the inside scoop on the S22 safety class. I have now done one of these for each defensive position groups and I hope you have enjoyed any of them that you took the time to read. Without any further ado we'll get to my measurement system for these recruits.
I will group these prospects into four tiers. The top tier is elite and they should be the first off the board for their position. Second is solid starter and they should be high quality starters, but have one or two knocks keeping them from elite status. Third is diamond in the rough because I believe that any of these youths could turn it around, but they have not put in the work necessary just yet. While the last group is the question marks for those recruits that I just do not know enough about to endorse.
Elites
Quinn Hughes - Playmaker
Quinn is one of the smartest safeties I have seen and is a superstar in that respect. He is fast enough to make plays all over the field and is smart enough to know where to be to make those plays. Pairs it with superb stamina that will last him all game long from the first snap to the last snap. Plenty of work put in this off-season is what really puts this kid over the top though and makes him one of the best safety prospects available in this deep draft class. I look forward to see what Quinn can bring to this league. Full disclosure I have had the pleasure of interacting with him a bit and I think he will be a positive presence in a locker room.
Johnny Hellzapoppin - Center Fielder
A name like that I honestly expected this to be a prank prospect, but Johnny is the real deal. He has got hands that are phenomenal for a safety and can comfortably pick off or deflect passes all over the field. His potential as a prospect is top tier and even an average coach should be able to tap into it for a tremendous gain for both sides. Should be a solid starter right out of the gate and if he keeps this work up he will be a great player. Definitely one to watch.
Jimmy Cooks - Center Fielder
Jimmy Cooks has a perfect name for a wide receiver with his athleticism as he would cook most cornerbacks, but as a safety this speed is instead used to frustrate wide receivers to no end. Better at reading the player in front of him than the field itself, however he has demonstrated enough work ethic that I believe a good coach will help him develop. All the athleticism will allow him to contribute right out of the gate, and with his work ethic everything else will come quickly for this kid.
Buck Thornton - Run Support
Buck is coming out of Central Washington University and so I have a bit more information on him than others thanks to my client being in the same state, although since they were different divisions it may not be that helpful. The one thing I can say for sure about this kid is that he has the work ethic to make it and especially if he gets a quality coaching staff around him to help him out. His stamina has served him well as a multi-sport athlete, and the speed that he developed should be useful as he pounds running backs into the turf. One huge plus is he spends too much time in the gym to get into trouble in his off hours and so he should be good if you need a wholesome draft pick for some reason. Overall a nice kid who should go early.
Sebastian Vettel - Center Fielder
Sebastian is a superstar right out of the gate based on all the reports that I have read about him. His coaches have praised him up, down, left, right, and sideways. According to that man this kid does everything the right way and having seen some of his highlights myself I can agree with that pretty well. The one thing that absolutely jumps off the page with him is his hands. Just interceptions and pass break ups all over the place with this kid. Top tier talent that shows the work ethic you need to succeed in this league. He may only have played one year in college, however it should not stop you from scooping this kid up early.
Solid Starters
Eric Barlow - Center Fielder
Eric Barlow is a great prospect from Buffalo who brings a lot to the table. Above average speed for the position allows him to cover better than most. Improved stamina makes sure he sticks around for you all game long. However it is his hands that truly make him stand out as a prospect and you can trust him to nab a few picks per season. Puts in a decent amount of work, although I would like to see a little more before I bump him up to the elite category. Here is hoping he takes that next step and joins the elite prospects of S22.
Wesley Eriksen - Center Fielder
Wesley is an impressive young safety who demonstrated a strong work ethic in college when he worked until the opportunity presented itself. He may only have two years of real college experience, but don't let that fool you into thinking he doesn't have enough experience to be an immediate contributor. His speed alone allows him to make plays all over the field and his work this off-season into developing his football smarts is more than enough to make him a strong prospect for the DSFL draft.
Hamish MacAndrew - Playmaker
I was lucky enough to get a press pass into Hamish's pre-draft presser and asked a few questions of him which made my job of scouting him much easier just by the fact that he answered them at all. My scouting suggests that his two major talents are his speed and his stamina. Both of which are above average for a play making safety and should serve him well as he roams the field. When asked his response was about his ability to read the field, and I can agree that his skill there is also above average. Was able to give a good response when asked about where he would like to improve, and overall impressed me with how he handled himself. Said he would like to be drafted by a team with a good community and so if you can provide that grab yourself a great safety.
Shawn Dawkins - Center Fielder
Shawn is the exact kind of player you want to have on your team after he was able to participate as a walk on at the University of Chicago. Originally making a splash as a special teamer he earned snaps at corner his rookie year before finding his home at the safety position. He then maintained that spot for the rest of his college career and for good reason given just how fast this kid is on the field and how hard working he is off of it. Worst comes to worst his combination of speed and team mentality should make him a star on special teams, however I think he'll be a starting safety for some lucky team.
Matt "Son of Havoc" Cross - Playmaker
Matt is a strange case, but not a bad one by any means. He lacks experience in football, but has been working on film study enough that I believe he will make up for it. Enough strength that you would expect him to be more of a run support safety, and similarly good in the tackling department. Speed that is good, although not noteworthy in this class that is loaded with sprinting safeties. This is a tough class because I feel a lot of the solid starters are borderline elite, but I just can't quite bring myself to bump him up that grade. That said he should be a top prospect and I wish him all the best in this league.
Diamonds in the Rough
Abbas Muhammad - Center Fielder
Straight line speed coming out of Duke University. Surprised I could even scout this kid with just how fast he moves, but that is exactly what you want out of a guy playing the deep middle of the field. Could afford to put in a bit more work during the season than he has thus far this off-season, but I like what I have seen out of him. Get him in the right situation and he could be something special.
Thom Shaylor - Playmaker
Thom is a swift safety out of Virginia Tech who is known for making plays on the field. Possesses endurance to make plays all game long, and has gone through a few off-season programs to work on his talents. I have not seen him around the past few days, but could just be a hiccup. Still check around before you throw a high pick at him.
Ed Ball - Playmaker
I like Ed and I like his style which could lead to a solid safety later on in his career. Right now I think what he really needs is to be drafted by a team with a good defensive backs coach as I do 100% believe that Ed can become a solid starter, but he needs polishing to get there. Coming out he has solid strength and speed that allow him to make plays at the safety position, and I think with some coaching he could be great at making plays at the safety position. All that said I like his confidence enough that I hope a team will pick him up and polish him into the diamond I believe he can become.
Magnus Valdyr - Run Support
His name is Magnus, he played for the University of Washington, and he is built around playing a strong position. Every fiber of my being tells me that I have to heap praise on this man for reasons that should be obvious if you have been following along thus far. They are stronger than average for a run support safety, although of course you can never have enough strength in that position. They also have good hips for a safety that plays the run and that combined with their swift speed really makes them a good prospect in my book. Would love to bump them up to solid starter status, but needs to do a bit more to get there if I am honest. That said I already have one client named Magnus from UW so if you need help Mr. Valdyr please message me. Be happy to answer any questions you might have to the best of my ability. All the luck in the world to you kid.
Silas Meissner - Playmaker
A fast play making safety coming out of Pitt that seems like a good kid from what I have seen. Needs to work with a better coaching staff I think, but has shown up to a couple off-season programs which is always promising. Nice work so far Silas and please keep at it!
Question Marks
Calum Auron - Playmaker
Calum is a fast play maker out of Colorado State. Developed both his speed and tackling ability off-season programs, but unfortunately has not been seen in any of them for over a week. If that changes I can say I like what they have done so far, but without showing up you cannot expect to play.
LiterallyJust A. Hexagon - Center Fielder
LiterallyJust A. Hexagon is a six year old safety from Geometry University. Genuinely made me laugh and is brilliant enough that I would love to be able to endorse them as an elite for this class. Sadly for all of us they have done minimal off-season work and have not been spotted in over a week. Which is easy to confirm as you know when you see a hexagon walking down the street. You ask for an autograph like a smart individual.
Michael Lee - Center Fielder
Lee is a deep safety who has demonstrated above average agility, superior speed, and decent endurance. Did a little bit of off-season work before dropping out of all of the programs and has been unseen for a week plus.
Cosmo Kramer - Center Fielder
I knew a kid named Cosmo once who was an amazingly athletic individual and it seems like Cosmo Kramer is cut from the same cloth. Really good combination of speed and stamina, and has even put in some work this off-season into developing his hands. The fact that he showed up for one program killed it and then bounced though is not a great sign. Unless you get him in your locker room you may just have leave him to explore the cosmos.
Matt Elam - Center Fielder
Does any scouting work I do on him even matter when he declared for the draft and then never showed up again? Best of luck to you Matt, but since you don't even have a fun name for me to comment on or anything you get no nice write up.
Patrick Hardy - Playmaker
There have been a whole lot of safeties so far that just have not shown up to off-season programs. Hardy was seen around within the last week, but made the cutoff by less than twenty-four hours. Good luck to him in his future endeavors, but no nice write up here.
Montgomery Burns - Center Fielder
I hated scouting this kid for a number of reasons, but at the top is that creepy mascot costume they have at Greendale Community College. This kid is smart enough to be rich with interceptions, but he is also just straight up rich and has demonstrated no real interest in the league as a whole. No sight of him in almost two weeks since he declared and I think it safe to say he is swimming in a money pool somewhere.
Bartholomew Castor - Center Fielder
Superb speed for a safety is what defines Castor. His motor runs smoother than most and will keep him going for years to come. Well it would if he actually showed up after declaring for the draft over a week ago, but I guess he might just be a bit of a troublemaker. If he comes back would love to see him do something in the league.
Amadeus Green - Playmaker
Coming out of Maine, but without a single appearance since he declared for the draft he gets left in the question marks folder. Amadeus is at least a cool name to add to a roster for what little that is worth. Maybe Green is the last color surname to give you a player rainbow?
C.D. Waldo - All Around
C.D. Waldo has unfortunately been unseen for over a week now. Where's Waldo is a fun book to read, but not a fun game to play with one of your draft prospects. If you can find him he does have a decently developed well rounded skill set that could work for you. Finding him is not an easy task though as anyone who has read the books will tell you.
Jordan Davis - Playmaker
Jordan has put in a little bit of work this off-season and compared to other play making safeties has developed most of his skills at least a little bit. Those good all around skills could be useful, but he has been unseen for the past few days. If just a hiccup then bump him up a grade, but if not sadly he ends up in the what if pile.
Dean Winchester - Center Fielder
Dean Winchester is a great talent with good hands for a safety. Put in a few appearances in the off-season programs and looked promising to me. Until he went missing about five days ago. Rumor has it his father picked him up and drove off in an old Impala, but whatever it is that happened we of course wish him the best in his future endeavors. If he does make it back you can comfortably bump him up a tier.
Joshua Vanger - Playmaker
Same old story that they only showed up to declare themselves ready for the draft before they bounced off to who knows where. Solid speed and a few other developed abilities for a play making safety, but nothing unforgettable about this prospect. Hope they are well wherever they are now.
Zakary Duke - Center Fielder
Yet another player that showed up to a couple of off-season programs before apparently deciding they would rather be somewhere else. Solid hips and speed would have made him a decent prospect, but oh well. Good luck out there Zakary and may you find where you belong.
Pierre Voodoo - Center Fielder
Declared for the draft and disappeared. The word on the street is that a Louisiana fella sent Pierre to the promised land, but I have no way of confirming or denying that. Short of him showing up to deny it or showing up as a corpse somewhere at least. If he does come back he has a decently well rounded skill set for a center fielding safety. Hope he is okay and doing well wherever he is now.
Dan Jackson - Playmaker
A play making safety out of Iowa State University who has not been seen in over a week and has a boring enough name that I have no jokes to make to fill space. Solid speed and stamina for a play making safety at least. Good luck out there Dan.
Moe Willis - Playmaker
Moe is a play maker out of Arizona State University and has good hands and smarts. No appearances in any off-season programs and been missing for over a week though lead me to conclude he decided to use those smarts elsewhere. Good luck to you Moe.
Elias Ziegler - Center Fielder
Elias is an interesting center fielder as all of his measurable traits seem centered too. Decently developed as an all rounder, but lack of appearances in off-season programs means you already know he has been missing for over a week. I wonder if there was a vampire attack or something. Hope you are well Elias and that you were not exsanguinated.
A-Aron Balakae - Playmaker
A decent all around play making safety out of CMU. Has worked on improving just about every aspect of his game and could be a pretty good safety with a solid coaching staff. No sign of him the past few days, and so I am erring on the side of caution in putting him in the question mark rank. If he comes back bump him up a rank no question, and either way we wish him well.
Hengwei Luo - Center Fielder
A unique deep safety that is known for his strength on the field. Solid speed and hands also serve to make him an interesting prospect. No appearances in three days though mean he goes in the question marks tier. If he shows up again bump him up a tier no problem, but if not I wish him luck in whatever he is doing instead.
Summary
Alright so the totals are five elite prospects, five solid starters, five potential diamonds in the rough, and twenty question marks. Thin in terms of overall talent, but good top end talent relative to other positions. Could be plenty of stars in this draft class and so I have high hopes for secondaries league wide. Best of luck to the safeties of S22 and may all of you outperform your draft position.
