Mike Lee Scouting Report
With the DSFL draft swiftly approaching, it only seems right for us to do an in depth scouting report on one of the hottest names and hottest commodities in Mike Lee. The Wide Receiver from the University of Texas is arguably the best receiver in the draft and definitely has the manager with the most success managing other players. While some people have asked questions about if this return is real or just a facade for attention, we believe the only way to find out is diving into the facts of the situation, instead of resting in speculation.
Strengths of Mike Lee:
Speed
The most obvious strength of Mike Lee is that he is an absolute burner. Mike Lee's speed cannot be matched by another wide receiver in the draft class, and its by a pretty sizable margin. It almost seems like he has only had time to work on his speed, which is pretty understandable considering it has constantly been shown that it is the most effective trait for an NSFL WR to have. Lee has stated that he believes if he can get by people consistently, a good enough QB will be able to throw a ball that is catchable even if his hands aren't like glue. The speed component will be beneficial for an entire offense, as it will be able to open up a lot of routes underneath and take the top off of the defense. Safeties will be shaded towards him and it will undoubtedly move people out of the box. Everybody on the team that drafts him will be appreciative of the speed that he has been able to develop.
Mental Approach
Mike Lee has a lot of family in Leighton Lee and Jaylon Lee who have been through this before. The transition from college to DSFL, the transition to the big leagues, and winning championships like every kid dreams of. Lee has this same metal approach and guys in his corner who can help him reach the sort of work ethic that he needs to have to be an extremely successful player in the NSFL. The mental approach is an aspect that is very underrated in the DSFL community, as sometimes it is hard to evaluate. Luckily for the GM's down there, Lee has guys that teams can contact and be assured of his work ethic and dedication to the game because he has so many contacts around the league. Other players may also have relatively good mental approaches, but Lee's has been seen in action and it is something that DSFL GM's need to take very seriously moving forward.
Zero Cares
Is this a strength or is this a weakness? I'm sure if you took a poll of the league, there would be a divide. But to me, it is important for a player to not care what others think about him, his build, and his statistics. It is pretty much an extension of Trust the Process, that both the process the player and team are going through just have to be trusted and the outside noise shut down. Mike Lee was cut in a different cloth from this standpoint. A lot of prospects want their stats to look a certain way or be perceived by the league as a certain image, but Lee knows that stats aren't all about what the numbers say. Taking the top off of a defense can be just as valuable as the guy who catches the ball and runs free in the empty space. This no care approach can allow a GM to utilize Lee in the offense how they see fit and he won't complain about lack of stats or whatever if the team keeps winning. He is a champ in this way, and an invaluable piece to the team.
Weaknesses
Hands
Lee's hands definitely leave some to be desired considering the fact that he is a wide receiver. It appears that he spends too much time running wind sprints and not enough time actually working with a jug machine or learning how to catch balls. He had a decent number of drops in college, but his ability to separate made it easy to catch passes. College players simply couldn't keep up with him, so there wasn't much pressure on him when he was trying to catch the ball. There were plays where his drops would prove to be costly for the team and hurt their chances of actually winning the game. Lee knows he needs to work on this and fully plans on putting hours into his ability to catch the ball. The question becomes, though, if he hasn't been motivated by now to learn how to catch a football, when is he going to decide it is worth his time to get the ball in his hands.
Endurance
Mike needs to spend more time working on his cardio. It is pretty clear that his primary training to this point has been to run short distances as fast as possible, but not to work on actually improving his cardio and ability to stay strong even in the midst of getting hit repeatedly. Teams probably won't be too interested in a guy who is in pain when running after the first quarter. Luckily for Lee, he has an entire off-season to get his conditioning together and build the stamina to be able to run flies the entire game. He needs to start though, it's a lot easier to say that you're going to than actually doing it.
Intelligence
One thing about wide receiver is you have to be able to know where to go when the play breaks down. Mike Lee is way too stupid to do that or pretty much anything else. The guy has the IQ of a rock and is going to struggle to adapt when teams actually game plan for him. Whichever team drafts him needs to pray that he starts reading books on football and trying to understand what its like to actually play the game of football with a brain. The league needs to keep an eye on this or else they are going to end up with an absolute clown on their teams.
