Minnesota came into this monstrous draft with a plan: improve on defense. The Grey Ducks led the DSFL in scoring by 100 points but were third in Points Against. With Zack Vega and Baby Yoda returning, Minnesota was already solid at quarterback and running back respectively, and also returned talented tight end Rainier Wolfcastle. The Grey Ducks followed their plan to a “T”, spending 21 of their 29 picks on defensive players, and the remaining eight to bolster their wide receiving core, add some depth on offense, and acquire a kicker. Here is a pick-by-pick breakdown of the Minnesota Grey Ducks S21 DSFL draft.
#8 Buck Thornton, S - Central Washington University
The Grey Ducks opened their draft with a message that they want to set a tone on defense. While safety may not have been their greatest need, Thornton was a player they wanted and was probably not going to be around for their second pick at #17. He brings a lot to the table, already coming in at 149 TPE, but will have to show well on the field to prove he was deserving of the eighth overall selection.
#17 Sebastian Vettel, S - University of Florida
At first glance, this is a curious pick since the Grey Ducks already took a safety in the first round. But, as was the case with Thornton, Vettel was a player Minnesota wanted and probably wouldn’t be around for their next pick the way defensive backs were going off the board in the early rounds. Vettel has been very active and is raking in the TPE. He will be a valuable asset at the back end of the Minnesota secondary.
#24 Mo “Mamba” Magic, DT - University of British Columbia
This may be Minnesota’s pick of the draft as Magic was a steal at #24. Mamba is extremely active and should have no issues being a max TPE earner. The Grey Ducks will need him to hold down the line and stop opponents at the point of attack.
#32 Lawrence Bass, LB - University of Tennessee
Another great value pick in the fourth round, Bass has been an active media producer and TPE earner. Bass will have to keep up his activity to earn playing time amongst the five linebackers drafted alongside him, but as of now, he is the frontrunner to lead this revamped Minnesota defense.
#40 William Alexander, WR - Oregon State University
In the fifth round, the Grey Ducks FINALLY looked to the offensive side of the ball. Wide receiver was their weakest position on offense, so naturally their first offensive pick was used to bolster their receiving corps. At 6’4”, 240lbs, Alexander is a big target for Vega to find in the red zone.
#44 Bo Jangles, CB - University of Texas
(Acquired pick in trade with Tijuana)
In a stacked S22 cornerback class, Minnesota was smart to wait on drafting a cornerback, knowing they could get a lot of value in the middle rounds. Jangles has good speed and hands and is exactly the type of cornerback they were looking for in round six.
#56 Mario VonPebbles, DE - Clemson University
With the 56th pick, Minnesota grabbed a solid counterpart for Mamba Magic in VonPebbles. Coming out of Clemson, VonPebbles has good speed and strength which he will use to disrupt the backfield of the Grey Ducks’ opponents.
#64 Jamar Lackson, RB - Yale University
Looking for a backup for Baby Yoda, the Grey Ducks found a great pick at #64 in Lackson. He has already demonstrated he can be a top TPE earner and should be a staple on offense in the coming seasons.
#72 Ricky Boomhauer, CB - University of Michigan
With other teams picking up most of the top talent at cornerback in the early rounds, Minnesota added to their secondary depth in round nine with Boomhauer.
#80 Ayden Bayden, DE - University of Missouri
The Grey Ducks grabbed another lineman with a fantastic name at #80 in Ayden Bayden. Bayden will look to play a role in a quickly improving defensive line in Minnesota.
#94 Cashrinski Blodenheimer, K - Western New Mexico University
(Acquired pick in trade with Norfolk)
Continuing the trend of incredible names, the Grey Ducks got their special teams player in the signature makers’ nightmare, Cashrinski Blodenheimer.
#97 Matt Krause, CB - University of Southern California
Minnesota adds to their secondary depth with Krause, an agile cornerback who they hope to turn into a solid contributor.
#102 Chauncey Morrison, DE - University of Texas at San Antonio
(Acquired pick in trade with Norfolk)
The Grey Ducks grab their third defensive end at #102 in Morrison, bringing in more bodies to compete for time at the position.
#104 Sim Snowbow, QB - University of Florida
Minnesota gets their quarterback of the future in round 13. Snowbow is a well balanced quarterback and is in a good spot to learn the trade from Vega.
#112 Gabe Nickson, OL - University of Wisconsin
Always good to get a lineman, the Grey Ducks grab a solid one in Nickson at pick #112.
#120 Samuel L. Sackson, Sr., LB - University of Notre Dame
Another great name, Minnesota adds to their linebacker depth and will continue to do so in the coming rounds. Sackson has been active in the forums and should be a great value pick for this spot in the draft.
#128 Raheem Bird, LB - Michigan State University
Bird had a fantastic showing in the Prospect Bowl, leading the stifling Buffalo Ramblers defense to the title. The Minnesota GM’s took notice and jumped on the opportunity to draft him in the 16th round.
#162 Tyron Shields, CB - University of Georgia
(Acquired pick in trade with London)
Still more depth in the secondary, although Shields is not very active so the Grey Ducks will hope to revive him prior to opening week.
#184 Archideld Bonzales, DT - Stanford University
Minnesota takes its second defensive tackle in the 23rd round, hoping to add more solid pieces on their line.
#192 Donovan Smith, WR - Syracuse University
Looks to be inactive.
#200 Kennedy Cannon, CB - Louisiana State University
Also inactive.
#208 Daymond Brooks, WR - Washington State University
Brooks was fairly inactive before the draft, but has been on fire in discord and on the forums ever since. It looks like the Grey Ducks have found a steal in the late rounds.
#216 C.D. Waldo, S - University of Wisconsin
Waldo got some TPE in after his creation, but has disappeared since then. Minnesota hopes to reactivate him to add some depth in their secondary.
#224 Shawn Ansari, TE - University of Michigan
The Grey Ducks found another player in the late rounds who showed back up on the forums after the draft. As their only tight end drafted, they will count on Ansari to keep up his activism and take over the reigns at tight end over the next few seasons.
#232 Sawyer Brutalitops, LB - Boise State University
Another fantastic name, Minnesota will hope to get Brutalitops going.
#240 Carlos Woods, CB - University of Notre Dame
Another player that the Grey Ducks will have to activate to get some value from.
#248 Daniel Ross, LB - University of Iowa
Ross appears to be inactive.
#256 Eugene McEvan, LB - University of Missouri
Minnesota nabs their sixth linebacker of the draft, yet an inactive one.
#264 Jacob Caine, CB - Texas A&M University
The Grey Ducks close out their immense draft class with Jacob Caine, their seventh cornerback of the class.
The Grey Ducks came into the draft with a plan and executed it. Along with their top offense, Minnesota hopes to field a top defense in S21 in their quest to repeat as Ultimini champions.
