Hey everyone, it’s me Goku! The Goku Gazette will be an ongoing series of articles over time as I post my random thoughts about stuff while trying to keep it mostly related to the league or myself. I’ve been doing it in PBE and it’s worked out quite well for me as I can just ramble on nonsense and get paid. I probably should do an introductory article about myself, the user but I’ll do that at some point before the draft. Maybe even as a draft bonus article.
So I ended up joining here with a bit of awkward timing. The trade deadline is four days away and the next drafts aren’t for a month. I won’t have much to do besides try to earn money with these shitty articles and do my activity checks and no PTs. I think I’m allowed to buy weekly training once I created so I guess I need to earn one million pretty quickly. I hope this actually gets graded by Sunday or I’ll be a little screwed. Maybe there’s a slight overdraft here too, I would appreciate it in my current state. I also have the rookie tasks I’ll be eligible for once Friday rolls around so I’ll do those if I have the time. My work schedule is a little strange with the coronavirus stuff happening. I’m still very fortunate to have a job at this point, don’t get me wrong. It’s just my management is a bit hypocritical and confusing. To make things simpler, assume I work in what is a warehouse for an oilfield company. So at this point in time basically all but one of our clients have shut down with the state of oil prices. We are very dead and there is nothing to do aside from cleaning already clean stuff for the eighth time. Including myself there are four people that share my role and we have been broken into pairs for the foreseeable future. With our pairs we are doing one week on, one week off and still being paid as normal. Now as I mentioned I’m definitely not upset about this, but what doesn’t make sense is management is trying to get people to isolate. There is another position at our station that actually goes to oil rigs and uses our equipment. These people are explicitly not required to come in, unless they are working. To further the confusion if you’re not already confused, my role also operates on an on call shift outside of normal hours rotating every week. So the thing that would make most sense for isolation would be to have the working pair on call and switch out every week, only coming in as needed. But of course this is not the case. My district manager still comes in every single day, along with the unneeded skeleton crew of about 3 others of us in total, not just my role. Again, I know there’s people in much worse spots but I’m just rambling. This guy is preaching isolation but is so addicted to his job that he’s coming in every day and making us other workers take on an unnecessary risk when we are a non essential operation. I think the only way he would stop coming in is if the government decides to lock us down like other places around the world are doing.
So yeah, I’ll try to get those rookie tasks done this weekend as today is my final day off before we change over. Thankfully it’s Wed-Fri and Mon-Tue so this is pretty awesome besides possibly getting diseased. Actually now that I look at them it’s all basic stuff. The only thing I won’t be able to do is a point task until mock drafts come out. If for some reason people are actually reading this, please leave a comment if there’s any PTs I can do as a S23 player before that. If not I’ll have to wait a month to finish off this checklist. I wonder if with the TPE boost from rookie tasks and creating at the deadline I’ll be first in TPE for my class. I don’t really intend to take this league as serious as the other two I’m in, but I say this as I grind articles. I have a lot of free time right now so I can’t say what will happen to Goku once I go back to my normal routine. Who knows though, that could be several months. I think I will be among the top few in S23 to start off, but I actually don’t want to get drafted too high. I might go over this more if I make an introduction article but I have a lot of pressure on me from being drafted early. I went first round in PBE but I’m not the most active person there. Sure I do my PTs and everything but I don’t chat as often in my team’s LR as I do my SHL teams. So to any GMs who read this please be aware that I may start off strong but there’s a fair chance I taper off as I get further into my career. I also would likely pop into LR every now and then but I’m getting overwhelmed with discord channels in general so I wouldn’t be a driving force of discord activity that is usually a strong factor for early picks in juniors. I do however look forward to seeing which team I end up on temporarily until the end of the season. I don’t have any teams I prefer at this point as I’ve only been here for a day and am completely open to where I go in both drafts. I won’t hold out for any teams, although I would prefer to join teams with players I know it’s not a requirement. I also wonder if I’ll get paid for the team I initially join for the end of S21, that would be great as I need any cash I can get to work towards the hefty price of equipment. For gear alone, the highest tier is 13.5mil and with training on top of that I need approximately 21.5 million per season. Assuming the rough average of 8 weeks per full season as my other leagues. This is a lot of work to do as a fresh account, but one that I’m used to at this point. I will continue to pump out articles as I feel the motivation to. Sorry they won’t be the best of quality though, I’m still working on my writing skills and typing ramblings such as this is way easier for myself.
On the topic of articles, one thing I will say that doesn’t work in my favour is the payout scale. Articles here don’t start paying off until the 1500 word mark. While I will hit that for this article, I normally would have great trouble with that. In PBE I’m able to work with the cutoffs of 600 and 1k words which is a lot better for my lack of creativity. Trying to hit 1500 with each of these is unlikely but I’ll try my best. Another possible option would be to pump out 400 word articles with the shotgun approach for many different topics. But why don’t I quickly math this out on here to determine which word count would be the most efficient and practical. I’ll include the 2k option as well, but I highly doubt I will reach that. I’ve written several different media pieces in my time in different sim leagues but I think I may have broken the 2k threshold a single time. So the payout is a little convoluted, but follows the same formula as tax brackets. For every word past each threshold, the words in that range earn extra money. So with a 600 word article you earn the 400 word base of $1450 and then a little extra for words 401-600. Actually for the sake of a few extra words I’ll include up to the 2500 tier for any curious readers. 2500 includes a bonus so it will see a huge jump. Anything after that has diminishing returns. It will look a little different as it will be the total average per tier, not just the payout. Here is the list:
400 words: $1450
600 words: $1507
1000 words: $1644
1500 words: $1726
2000 words: $1757
2500 words: $2108
So there we have it, it looks like if you get hung up on an idea after the 1k word mark, it’s not really worth forcing it to try and reach more. I think after this mess of an article I will try to pump out stuff in the 1k range, but I’ll just write stuff until I get tired. Sadly though for this article I need to press on. The theme of this article is there is no theme. I’m about to cross over 1500 words during this sentence so it will be a long and arduous journey as I try to reach the new goal of 2500 words. I didn’t really want to go for it but after doing the math and learning there’s a $400k bonus for that long of an article I might as well try.
I supposed next on the agenda would be to voice a couple complaints I have so far and get paid for them, rather than just making a random TD or post to suggestions somewhere. While we’re still on the topic, that grading scale is pretty steep. I understand people who want to max earn should put in some effort, but holy crap I need to write three 2500 word articles per season to sustain myself if I don’t get a job or have a fat contract? That seems like too much. I do appreciate the old pay being listed and I can see how much worse it was before, but there’s still room for improvement. It’s also confusing as to why once you hit the 2k word mark there is diminishing returns. Why does the value decrease for words once we get to the 1501-2000 bracket. Don’t we want to reward people if someone were to make a properly detailed and well written large article? With the math I’ve done and the bonus not hitting until 2500 there is very little reason to aim for anywhere in the 1501-2499 word range unless your words are flowing nonstop. I feel like a fair portion of articles could fall into this word range and they’re getting punished by a strange payout system. I’m glad that double draft media is a thing here as it will greatly help, I’ll have to do a cheesy mock draft article or something next month. Now aside from me complaining about the payout system and wanting to get paid more than I deserve, I bring a fair idea that comes from SHL. SHL gives every rookie a 2x first media bonus that is deferred for draft articles when the draft bonus is on. I think this is something that should be considered here to assist first gen accounts get a leg to stand on if they want to max earn but don’t have time to do an insane amount of media. It’s a fun bonus and it’s not like there’s a site economy to worry about inflating or anything like that. My second complaint is a more serious one. Like sure the media payout is strange and not the best but that’s something I can live with. The thing I really don’t understand is why do accounts need to be approved before they can post or create? This seems extremely foolish for player retention. I draw on this from my own experience as I was up late and decided to create a player, but had a message saying I needed admin approval to post. I’m already in a couple leagues so it’s not that big of an issue for myself, just a minor annoyance really. But just think for a second and try to think of all the times you wanted to maybe browse a website or check out a video of something but you had to make an account, or remove adblock or something like that. Did you go through the effort, or can you think of even a single time where you were like “nah fuck that” and went on your way to something else. With the current system in place I can only assume the NSFL has lost several potential active users due to this. Was there an issue with spam bots at some point because that’s the only reason I can see to have this implemented. I didn’t have this issue with PBE and they use the exact same host site as NSFL. If any masochistic admins have read this far please look into letting people sign up and create without extra approval, it’s unnecessary.
So I need a couple hundred more words to get to 2500, remember that introduction article idea I mentioned earlier? Well I’ll just do it now to help me get to the end of this.
Naosu Scouting report for GMs:
Greeting to anyone who doesn’t know me from the other two leagues I’m in. I joined SHL in July 2019 and PBE in Dec 2019. Next on my journey is here, the NSFL. I’m a top earner in both other leagues, always floating in the top 5 of my class in SHL. In PBE I have a hold on third in my class, although my PBE class drops off quicker. I’ve been in three drafts now, for some reason I skipped the MiLPBE draft due to being claimed on waivers the season before. With SHL and I think here as well I would have been reentered into the minor draft. I’ve consistently been a first round talent, going first, fifth, and sixth overall in the three drafts I’ve been a part of. However with this information it’s a bit of a double edged sword to anyone scouting me. Those two leagues would take priority over this one and while I have the upside for max earning there’s a chance I get too busy to type up crap like this for money. I see no problem with doing PTs and basic stuff, it’s just extra stuff that could be a problem. Coincidentally I said the exact same stuff leading up to my PBE and look where I am. I don’t think I would ever go entirely inactive though, my downside is just potentially not earning. I would actually prefer to not go in the first round this time as I don’t want to feel bad if I ever do miss stuff. But if there’s no seemingly better options, have at me. I believe I’m reiterating an earlier point of this discord but if you’re only reading this section, don’t draft me if you’re a minors GM looking for discord activity as a big factor. I might be active sometimes, like now when I’m not working my week on shift but when I am working I don’t check it too often.
Well I’ve hit the 2500 mark so I don’t want to go much further than that. Maybe I’ll make a game and see if I can tank my draft stock. This article certainly doesn’t help, nor does publicly announcing it. I will probably never write an article this long again but we'll see.
So I ended up joining here with a bit of awkward timing. The trade deadline is four days away and the next drafts aren’t for a month.
