Alright! A lot of shit has happened. Let's talk about this.
Once again, this starts the night before. After I made my post from yesterday, a member of HO got into contact with me about the sort of person we'd want to be our new GM in Chicago. There was talk of how the team could possibly get them due to the 2nd Round Rule which is the most annoying thing to me right now. A gave them mine and Oles' combined pitch as well and I was informed that there were a lot of people vying for the position. Some that no one expected. But they didn't give any names. They asked if I was strongly against an outsider or such things as that and I basically said that judging by who we knew was going after the position (which was honestly just me/oles vs AdamS), I thought that Oles and I were the right decision based solely on the fact that we're this fucking angry about the Butchers being shit.
We didn't really talk about any specific candidates after that, probably my own fault since I took the chance to plug myself, but the HO member told me that they'd talk to some other Chicago users and get their feedback, so I was feeling okay about that. I also brought up the possibility of someone just being named the interim so that there was someone at the wheel and we didn't look like un pollo sin cabeza. They said "Huh, we never thought of that."
Cool.
Anyway, things were really quiet until around 2PM when that same HO member DM'd me and asked! If I wanted to change the strats. Heh. I'm the wrong person to ask, just leave them as is until everything's sorted. The team isn't going to be winning anything this season anyway.
So, I get a real DM from HO around 4PM, just when I'm about to finally work on homework. They ask me the mood of the Chicago LR, I say that it's no different than usual, I talk about myself some more and what I'm doing as then de facto interim. So we get around to the point, HO has made a selection.
I'm not going to say who this selection was for their own sake. I know I'm being as transparent as possible here, but I still want to keep their privacy for what I'm about to say. And any of you who've been trying to guess who it was, don't say anything. They're a good person.
And that's the point. HO did pick out someone who'd be a wonderful GM of a team not named the Chicago Butchers. We in the war room didn't even recognize who this person was. We had to look them up and even asked HO for an explanation. It was someone new to both the league and GMing and it seemed like they didn't completely do all their research on the team's situation. Just a general idea of what a rebrand and rebuild looks like.
Once again, the user seems to be an absolute cinnamon roll and might go on to be a good GM somewhere else; but it was of the opinion of the Chicago war room that we needed a GM with much much more experience. Someone who's been in the shit before. Someone who's done this before.
So, I asked HO what would happen if the war room unanimously rejected their appointment.
They said that HO would probably have to restart the whole process again.
So, we tried to give this user a fighting chance. We grilled them, maybe a bit harshly, but it's warranted given the situation they were about to jump into. We asked about player retention, test simming, what to do about draft picks. Everything. And we couldn't really find enough of a professional reason to not accept them as GM. But it just bothered us by how much of an unknown quantity they were.
We sat back for a moment. We all were voting yes to them just because it felt like what we were obligated to do. But as I said, something just didn't feel right. We started talking about what if we said no.
We started with just our own recommendation that HO simply rethink the decision. It would look just as bad if Chicago was given a green GM again, just like the past few ever since I gave control to Toasty. Newbie GMs are what's gotten us into this mess, why should we go along with another one? Just because HO says we have to? And what about our own decision? No one else on the team was contacted about this other than me because I made that post. There was apparently a plan for others to be contacted, but that just never happened. We felt powerless, like this entire thing was inevitable even if we didn't want it, even if the team didn't want it.
Then I had a really dumb thought.
"What if we seize the means of production?"
I'd been joking about how since the Butchers were fully without a GM and acting autonomously, we were a socialist collective. Making jokes about the Soviet Yunyun and such. I was planning on handing over the team at the point and I was just joking about the "Soviet Era Chicago Butchers" and even asked for a sig to be made.
When we were thinking about what power we as the war room had, we realized that if we had the support of the team behind us, we could stand toe-to-toe with HO on this decision. So, I appealed to the team. I told them that the war room did not believe that HO made the best possible decision and that we were essentially about to revolt.
Unprecedented shit.
And they said yes. And so began the Chicago Butchers' Revolt.
We told HO that we firmly rejected their appointment and would like to have a greater role in the GM hiring process. This was our team. And if decisions are being made about it, we want to be a part of it. Some dumb decisions have been made in the past, but we're still people. We're still on the team and we still want a say in our own futures.
So HO asked to come to speak to our locker room. I thought it was just going to be one of them, but they brought almost the entire squad. The Butchers general chat was popping off because they'd just seen one user enter and be given war room, only to have it swiftly removed two hours later. Plus, the GM role was changed from "GM" to "Senior Leadership". No one knew what the fuck was going on. As I said, I did not expect that many people to show up.
Anyway, we vent to HO about the entire situation, how we felt this appointment was rushed, how we wanted to bring in someone with better experience, how we wanted more of a say in the process. I don't blame HO for doing anything wrong. As I've stated before, the experience of looking at the situation from the outside in is different than being in it. Their choice would've made a wonderful expansion GM. But this wasn't a real expansion team. The Chicago Butchers are less than an expansion team with what they have right now.
Expecting a fight, we wait for HO's decision.
They say "Okay, but you have to find this new GM yourselves and figure out how to bring them in."
You see, one of the big reasons why, at least to the war room, it looked like this decision was rushed was because the appointed GM was going to be in the S23 draft. Meaning that we would have the draft pick to take them with. It just felt like they were picked out of convenience. And once again, nothing against the user or HO, but we just didn't feel comfortable handing the team over in that sort of situation where we knew almost nothing.
But either way, HO gave Stennett and I official interim control of the Chicago Butchers.
Thus ended the Chicago Butchers' Revolt.
And so began the official Soviet Era of the Chicago Butchers.
Our plan for this was quick and simple:
1. Get the official list of applications from HO
2. Remove any who we didn't feel had enough experience in GMing
3. Speak to those who were left
4. Brief the team on the available choices and the recommendation of the war room
5. Let team vote for the next GM through an Alternative Vote. (It's really neat)
6. We execute whatever deals we'd need to make to bring that new GM in
7. I finally do my goddamn homework
This should be done relatively quickly. We started this search at around 9PM and voting was opened at midnight. Voting will only be allowed by current Chicago Butchers players and will close at 7PM... tonight I guess? I dunno, it's about 1:30AM on 3/30/20 in Chicago.
We as the war room were surprised by how impressive some of these candidates were that we didn't even know about. It would've been great to have been informed of some of these. But, anyway. We whittled it down to four main contenders, spoke to them about their plans for the team and for their own transportation to the team, and popped them in the ballot.
I know that this looks completely fucking bizarre, but this is a completely fucking bizarre situation we've gotten ourselves into. I don't think a team has been completely without a GM (or at least not visibly) since S1 when Shaka, JBear, and I took over the Orange County Otters after Grapehead quit before the first game of the season. So I guess I really was the only person around with experience in what to do in this sort of situation, I guess. Didn't even think about that until now. Anyway, it looks weird.
There's a common refrain going around that "these were the same people that put the team in this situation." And well, you're not wrong. But that's kind of a good thing. None of us in this war room expect to survive this rebuild. Unless Oles and I are elected (which would be a bad idea considering how many people hate me for doing this right now), I'm not going to be around this franchise. Stennett is very close to retirement himself. CDub's future is completely up in the air depending on who wins the election. But we all care so much about this team. We all want so badly for this team to be better.
This is what I told the team after I gave them the war room's recommendations for the election:
"All of these choices will involve a lot of turnover. People will be traded, there’s no way around it. But this is a chance to leave your mark in a positive way for this team, for this league. There’s the old proverb of the old man who plants the seeds to a tree that he will never know the shade of. That’s us, here, right now. We are making a decision, not just for us, but for the league. No matter what happens after this, this is our team. We have control over the fate of this franchise. I hope we all take a moment and really think about who we think will be the best choice for the Chicago Butchers."
So that's where I'll leave this today. Tomorrow we'll have a new GM for the Chicago Butchers, appointed not by the ruling class, but by the mandate of the people.
Good night.
Good luck.
And may God have mercy on our souls.
