Ask anything and everything. T shirt cannons will be armed with 2/2 Philly as a commemorative sign of being drafted to the liberty as the 2nd round, 2nd pick.
I think based on the type of teams that were contacting me, the number of other players in my position and my relative value, it made sense where I landed where I did I think. There were some reports that I could have gone into the first round with some being surprised that I would be available in the 2nd. I think it would have been nice to have had that first round pick status but ultimately in the long run of things it doesn't matter too much since it won't change the fact that I landed where I did and couldnt' be happier honestly.
When I saw the trade happen, I had a hunch that it was for me just because of the great talks I've had with Philly prior to the draft. My anticipation was that if the first round shook out in a way where the last couple teams decided to go in a different path with other players/safeties, then I felt relatively confident that Philadelphia would be my new NSFL home. I thought that it might have been nice to have potentially been part of some of the final three teams in the 1st round as they have had a long history of success and especially as of late, but definitely none of them stood in the same way that Philly did for me. I think if I was given the choice I don't think I would have picked a different team to go to instead knowing the kind of culture that the Liberty value as part of their team.
No, no hard feelings for being picked behind so many talented players. As well with the inherent value that many teams place on the user rather than the player or even position, trying to judge the decision of which safety or defensive back was best available at this point is hard to do. Not to mention with how common position swaps are, trying to compare them right after the draft is probably a lost exercise for now. It's something I'm definitely interested in following to compare fellow rookie defensive backs in our first seasons in the NSFL as well as how the trajectory of our careers go on to be.
The Philly locker room was great on my initial entrance and time goes on I only seem to enjoy it more. Still lots of folks to meet and get to know as well as my fellow rookies. There was a little bit of the hub bub of Philly recently moving on from a large locker room personality so I'll have to admit there was some hesitation about entering a situation that was recently so seemingly volatile but without knowing the full situations, I think that what happened was probably in my favor as well coming into a room that had a clear idea of what sort of team engagement they were looking for.
I think I'm going to go with some similar ones as I had for my rookie career in the DSFL. Aiming to nail at least one interception. It sounds like maybe interceptions aren't as common at this level given the talent of both the quarterbacks and receivers, so I might be expecting too much. That being said I had the same feeling going into last season and started the season with an interception after my first game so never say never I suppose. I suppose other than that, I'm sure being able to be in the Rookie of the Year conversation is something that I would be honored to be part of, though that means I would have to already be performing at a high level. Now that I finally have a home and had a quick chat with my GM, it's good to know what my future is. It'll be as part of the secondary group so in the end I'm just looking to be part of a young and exciting unit that hopes to be a key contributing factor to our team winning some games on the way to making a playoff appearance.
And as for favorite type of frog, I honestly couldn't tell. I don't even think I would like them. The closest thing I've seen lately was the toads in Naruto as I've been doing a re-watch of it for fun(???). Honestly it's been half enjoyable and half tedious with how rough the 2000's style of television is with its constant flashbacks. I get that they're trying to set up situations for emotional impact and there's definitely some of that which still lands, but when you've seen the same scene from episode 3 or whatever about 20 times by the time you get to season 6, I think you're over doing it. That being said, they definitely weren't made for binging style of viewing and there's not really a way that they could have anticipated somebody consume media the way that we do these days. I'm already getting off topic and giving off the impression of a closet weeb. I'll just go with Gamatatsu as my favorite toad even though toads and frogs aren't the same.
Playoffs first and foremost. From there, winning a round would be fantastic. I’m not super familiar with Philly’s playoff history but regardless I would love to make an appearance in the post season with the Liberty since I missed out on that opportunity with the Myrtle Beach Buccs. I think that there’s a likelihood of that happening with our young defense being a big and exciting part of that but it’ll still be tough to really say this early.
I guess the only player award I can realistically consider would be Rookie of the Year. I’d be interested in looking at the list of other rookies that are also going directly from the DSFL to the NSFL this season but it does seem like there’s a decent number of them in the S23 draft coming up at the same time as me. It might be hard considering how it sounds like certain positions are prone to getting the recognition based on the natural tendency to get stats, but all the same I think if it’s possible to perform at that kind of level worthy of individual recognition, it’ll contribute to the bigger goal of making sure Philly wins and wins often.
As for how I came up with the name, I don’t think it’s anything particularly ingenious. The last time I created a player name was a little bit off the cuff and that’s probably just how I operate when it comes to trying to make something like this. I think I just liked the last name of Smoothie with the way it rolled off the tongue but also because I made my nightly smoothie to drink. Then it became a question of trying to add a first name that would either fit and compliment Smoothie. Could’ve been a simple alliteration but nothing really stuck with me when I played around with a few ideas. With my desire to create and use an Asian based player render, Eugene Yang, one of the members of the Try Guys was somebody that just popped to mind. My girlfriend is a big fan of their channel so they’re somebody that I watch semi regularly. Honestly, picking him as a render might’ve been more fun because he’s been in some wacky photo ops and isn’t afraid to dress around for fun. We’ll see, right now Hines Ward's smile is just infectious and every time I think about changing it to another render, I see it and change my mind.
I found it to be the perfect place to be as a rookie to the NSFL in general. Loaded with people from all kinds of teams, a nice mix of both younger users as well as veterans who were interested in helping out the younger guys...I don’t think I was ever left wanting and if anything, it was way more active than I could have fully appreciated it for given how it can take me a bit get used to a room. I think that kind of activity level is generally appreciated by most new people because you can get a great first impression of all the individuals in the locker room right after you get drafted. Coming into a quiet room right away is never a great experience. Regardless of whichever channel I looked, there was always something happening and including the general members of that locker room who aren’t part of the team still also added to it. That feature of a lot of NSFL teams is really interesting where I found SHL to be much more exclusive. In some ways that’s nice in that you become really tight knit group but at the same time, it’s going to be those members for better or worse.
With a lot of the teams that were scouting me, many had asked me thoughts on going up/staying down. I was initially inclined to stay in Myrtle Beach for another season just because how things ended left a sour taste in my mouth, and I wanted an opportunity to change that and win an Utimini with a group who I knew was more than capable of that.
However, upon chatting with Philly more I got accustomed to the idea that a rookie season right away. My primary worry was that I wouldn’t be able to contribute with a low TPE total especially since my overall TPE even compared to my class was still not at the top of all prospects. Still, with the knowledge that Brandon Booker was able to step in at a similar TPE level and do really well for them was still quite a relief to hear. Not to mention, getting a chance to get a head start on a potential hall-of-fame career is something that’s also attractive even without an Ultimini to my name. At the end of the day though, I think the thing that was most attractive element to me was playing regularly each week against the best teams in the NSFL. It’s one thing to make predictions without any sort of connection to the teams. Now the entire league becomes much more interesting now that I have a horse in the race.
I think the main players that I would like to model myself after are some current and overall greats in the NSFL for safeties in Walt Green and especially Tyrone Biggums. Both of them are Center Fielders with more speed and much intelligence than I do have. I think my favorite part is their overall intelligence and being huge influences on the defense side of the ball. Biggums in particular is somebody I look up to being a fellow Canada born player out of Western Canada. He’s about as perfect as a player gets with absolutely zero weaknesses in his game. Granted, it sounds like maybe I’ll be playing some corner at the start of my career with the number of young defensive backs in our team, but I’m still more than happy to contribute any way that I can.
Quote:How do you feel about your draft position? Did you expect to be taken in the 2nd round?
Were you surprised to see your name called when Philadelphia's pick was announced? Had any other teams shown similar or more interest in drafting you?
Five safeties went in the first round. Is being the sixth safety off the board motivation for you to prove those five teams wrong or are you just happy to have been picked high in such a talented draft class?
How has the Philadelphia locker room been since your arrival? What were your expectations prior to meeting your new teammates?

What is your biggest goal this year with the Liberty? are you shooting for any player awards?
How did you come up with the name Eugene Smoothie? It's one of the best I've seen.
Are you excited to take the field for the first time in the big leagues? nervous? fearful?
