DSFL Draft Review – 1st round
The Season 23 Prospect Draft finally happened. All of the new players have been sent to their new DSFL teams and we are full steam ahead to the preseason. Before we let the Prospect Draft high fade, let us review the first round picks of the DSFL Draft, grade each teams draft, and reflect on how it will affect their upcoming season. Predicting the performance of each drafted player is difficult, but it is important to evaluate where they are now, how we expect them to impact their new teams, and where this could propel their career moving toward the NSFL. Let us begin!
1. Kansas City Coyotes select - Asher Montain- DE
For the first overall selection of the season twenty-three DSFL draft the Kansas City Coyotes selected Asher Montain, defensive end. For a team that ended with a record dead last in the NFC North, as well as the highest points against last season, you knew that the Coyotes were going to make a selection on the defensive side of the ball. Last season, Goku was the only formidable defensive end on the team, so replacing him was a must in the draft. One could have predicted them going with a DT here but The University of Alabama product was just too good to pass up. He measures up to six foot five inches and three hundred pounds. With 187 TPE already, 85 speed and 76 strength, he is sure to wreak havoc on defense this season. He is definitely someone to look out for as he progresses to the NSFL.
2. Portland Pythons select – Dorothy Zbornak – DE
The second pick was also a DE, as the Pythons select Zbornak. A player that claims, “Once a Royal, always a Royal” is selected by a different team in division. On a team with Claxton and Tackthetritrix headed to the NSFL, Zbornak will fill a big need on the team that performed poorly last season. Another TPE monster for a draft pick, sitting at 152 TPE with 69 of it available, we can expect a big jump from Zbornak early in the season.
3. Myrtle Beach Buccaneers select – Jeremiah Zelos – LB
The Buccaneers record reflects poorly on the team as a whole. The team scored 85 more points against opponents which would oftentimes represent a good showing. It appears that games they won they won by a lot, and their losses were narrow. Hopefully adding some talent to the defensive side of the ball will help them be successful. Expect this Buccaneers team to turn heads this season. Out of Grambling State, Zelos is an athletic 6’ 3” 265 pounds, and he already has 80 speed. In a draft with multiple top LB talent, the Buccaneers picked one that is sure to help them realize their potential.
4. Dallas Birddogs select – Zoe Watts – KP
Though it may not be the most exciting pick, the Birddogs go for need here as they draft a kicker in the first round. Last season, three of the seven Birddog losses came by 3 or less points. Hopefully Watts can try to close that gap. Additionally, Watts should help with field position as a punter. To really grade the Birddogs draft depends on the talent they find in the later rounds.
5. Norfolk Seawolves select - Quentin Button – S
After that narrow overtime loss in the playoffs to the Ultimini champion Luchadores, the Seawolves will be full steam ahead toward the championship again next season. The Seawolves’ secondary was mild to say the least this past season. Button’s total TPE is 151, and he is already up to 85 speed. At 6’ 1”, the Iowa product should be ball hawking from sideline to sideline. I will be curious to see how quickly he upgrades his hands.
6. Minnesota Grey Ducks select – Alejandro Chainbreaker – LB
With an already dominant defense, allowing only 216 points against this past season, the Grey Ducks decided to continue to make it hard for opponents to score on them. Chainbreaker is a speed rusher with 174 TPE, speed at 83 and strength at 70. He is going to be wreaking havoc in the backfield this season. A great pick for the Grey Ducks that insist on dominating on defense.
7. London Royals select – Juan Domine – LB
The third linebacker taken in the first round, Domine goes to the Royals which is known for creating linebacker of the year award winners. The Royals needed help on the defensive side of the ball this draft and Domine is going to make an impact right away. The left hander from the University of Houston has 84 speed, and is balanced across tackling, strength, and intelligence. He is going to be able to do it all on the Royals defense. After a narrow loss to the Luchadores, we can expect to see the Royals fighting for the Ultimini again
.
8. Tijuana Luchadores select – Maverick Bowie – S
The final pick of the first round would go to the Ultimini champion Luchadores. The Luchadores were strong on defense this past season, particularly in the secondary. With safeties moving to the NSFL, it was time to bring in some young talent. Maverick’s total TPE is 138, but his speed is already 88 and as we know speed kills in simulation football. Bowie was a smart pick by the Luchadores who look to maintain their spot as reigning champions of the DSFL.
The first round saw no offensive players drafted. There is clearly high demand for defensive talent across the board in the DSFL. The most surprising pick in my opinion was Zoe Watts, however, this pick will help fill an important hole on the Birddogs. It is most often the case that I prefer picking based purely on talent, rather than to fill a specific team need. Based on this philosophy Montain and Chainbreaker were the best picks of the first round based off of starting TPE, the next question now is how will they progress throughout the season and how will they be utilized by their respective teams. I am looking forward to see how all of these players do in the upcoming season, and if they will be drafted in the first round of the NSFL draft next offseason.
