At just under the halfway mark of the NSFL season, I want to take a look at awards. If anything this will just be fun to compare to how the league looks at the end of the season. Just a few housekeeping notes:
-I didn't do DSFL because they are only 4 games in right now, too early.
-I know there are rules in place about this now, but I'm just using index/tracker positions. I'm not gonna try to sort who has actually been playing where.
-I am of the opinion that inactive players should be eligible for awards. So some of these people are likely IA. I know they aren't eligible to really win these awards, but hey I'm the one writing the article, my rules.
Kicker of the Year
Winner: Silver Banana (17/17 XP, 18/19 FG, 1/1 50+, 56 Long)
Other Contenders: Alfredo Crisco, Matthew McDiarmid, Dougie Smalls
Crisco and McDiarmid have both been perfect, so it's hard to go in a different direction, but Banana has only missed one kick and is the league leader in points scored.
Punter of the Year
Winner: Jacob Small (46.9 Avg, 14 Inside 20, 71 Long)
Other Contenders: Dougie Smalls, J.J. "Jay" Jay-Jamison, Sam Sidekick
Solid average for Small and 14 inside the 20 in seven games is very impressive. Last season the leader had 19 over 13 games.
Returner of the Year
Winner: Mako Mendoca (30.6 KR Avg, 101 Long, 2 TD)
Other Contenders: Louisiana Purchase, Mason Blaylock, Mathias Hanyadi
Purchase has a nice lead on return average, as well as a touchdown, but voters love touchdowns and Mendoca has 2 of them. Also just to note, small sample size of course, but there are four players with kick return averages over 30 yards, which not a single player eclipsed last season.
Defensive End of the Year
Winner: Lawrence Bass (31 Tackles, 13 TFL, 1 FF, 1 Sack)
Other Contenders: Immanuel Blackstone, James Cho, Nero Alexander
As usual, the sack numbers among defensive ends are unspectacular, so only 1 sack for Bass, but he leads DE in tackles and tackles for loss.
Defensive Tackle of the Year
Winner: Bubba Thumper (26 Tackles, 1 FR, 5 Sacks)
Other Contenders: Mo "Mamba" Magic, Pete "Plop" Miller, Shane Masters
I don't love giving it straight to the one leading in sacks, but none of the other contenders have the other stats to overtake him.
Linebacker of the Year
Winner: Mo Berry (52 Tackles, 1 FF, 1 FR, 9 Sacks, 1 Int, 10 PD)
Other Contenders: Galf Wilf, Derred De Ville, Douglas Quaid
Before the season started I ran tests on each game of the season - nothing serious, just to get an idea of stats for some players. I told Frick that Berry was in line for about 7 to 8 sacks for the season. Which would make sense, he's in regression now, he may slow down. etc. And here we are and he's at 9 sacks.through 7 games. MoVP
Cornerback of the Year
Winner: Korrin Abernathy (23 Tackles, 4 Int, 15 PD)
Other Contenders: Jordan Andrews, Zamir Kehla
I guess the days of Purchase and Abernathy being on pretty equal footing career-wise are over. That's fine. I'm fine. Next award.
Safety of the Year
Winner: Quinn Hughes (29 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 3 Int, 3 PD, 3 TD)
Other Contenders: Mason Blaylock, Hamish McAndrew, Walt Green
The all time record for defensive touchdowns in a season is 4. Three defensive touchdowns in 7 games games is just really impressive.
Offensive Lineman of the Year
Winner: Lazslo Fourty-Two (43 Pancakes, 1 Sack Allowed)
Other Contenders: Givussafare Rubbe, Douglas Quail
With one sack allowed Lazslo is already unable to match his stellar S22 sack-free season. But he is still on pace to break the single season pancake record thanks to the elongated season..if COL bot Leftington Tackle (leader with 48) doesn't beat him to the punch.
Tight End of the Year
Winner: Jeffrey Phillips (39 Rec, 619 Yards, 15.9 Avg, 7 TD)
Other Contenders: James Angler, Austin McCormick
Are these guys even tight ends? Who can keep track anymore? Like I said I'm going by their listed position, and Phillips is far and away the winner here.
Wide Receiver of the Year
Winner: Saba Donut (36 Rec, 715 Yards, 19.9 Avg, 6 TD)
Other Contenders: Net Gaines, Rayne Gordon, Future Trunks
Second in WR receptions, first in yards and TD, third in average. Averaging over 100 yards per game. Pretty easy call here.
Running Back of the Year
Winner: Mathias Hanyadi (120 Carries, 549 Yards, 4.6 Avg, 6 TD, 25 Rec, 189 Yards, 7.6 Avg)
Other Contenders: Tatsu Nakamura, Jamar Lackson
Others have more yards, but Hanyadi has the fullest resume, with a strong average, TDs, and decent receiving stats.
Quarterback of the Year
Winner: Franklin Armstrong (134/246 1850 Yards, 54.5 Pct, 16 TD, 2 Int, 97.1 Rating, 40 Carries, 187 Yards, 4.7 Avg)
Other Contenders: Jay Cue, Easton Cole
He maybe isn't running it like he used to, but Armstrong is still going strong in the passing game. Completion percentage isn't great but the efficiency elsewhere and volume can't be topped.
Defensive Performance of the Year
Winner: Galf Wilf Week 6 (10 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 1 Safety)
Other Contenders: Hingle McCringleberry Week 4, Wayne Howyanow Week 3
I would put money on this one not winning the real award. It's a great line, don't get me wrong, I just think there will usually be a game to top this.
Offensive Performance of the Year
Winner: Wolfie McDummy Week 6 (16/20 205 Yards, 1 TD, 0 Int, 126.0 Rating, 17 Carries, 135 Yards, 1 TD)
Other Contenders: Apollo Reed Week 5, Jay Cue Week 5
Meanwhile, its possible of course, but I don't know if anything will top this. Outstanding rating and huge running numbers.
Defensive Breakout Player of the Year
Winner: Korrin Abernathy (This Year: 23 Tackles, 4 Int, 15 PD -- Last Year: 53 Tackles, 7 Sacks, 0 Int, 1 PD)
Other Contenders: Derred De Ville, Douglas Quaid
This one is a bit odd as Abernathy was clearly playing in a different spot last season. And 7 sacks is impressive no matter where you play, so you could argue this one differently, but 15 PD in 7 games is outstanding.
Offensive Breakout Player of the Year
Winner: William Lim (This Year: 31 Receptions, 478 Yards, 15.4 Avg, 2 TD -- Last Year: 21 Receptions, 310 Yards, 14.8 Avg, 1 TD)
Other Contenders: Tatsu Nakamura, Brock Phoenix
This one is more straightforward. Lim was buried on the depth chart last season for S22 Ultimus Champion Colorado Yeti (in case you forgot who won), but is now WR1 and therefore has already handily surpassed last year's numbers.
Defensive Rookie of the Year
Winner: Hingle McCringleberry (59 Tackles, 5 Sacks, 6 PD)
Other Contenders: Son Goku
McCringleberry is putting up nice numbers and would be an other contender at LB, but there's just a lot of competition there. Same with Goku.
Offensive Rookie of the Year
Winner: Jamar Lackson (146 Carries, 596 Yards, 4.1 Avg, 5 TD)
Other Contenders: James Angler
Pretty clear winner here as Lackson has put up really strong numbers and is the focal point of the SaberCats offense with a rookie QB in place.
Defensive Player of the Year
Winner: Mo Berry
Other Contenders: Korrin Abernathy, Galf Wilf, Quinn Hughes
For what feels like the millionth time, Mo get the DPotY but misses out on MVP. Let's revisit that though if he gets like 20 sacks.
Offensive Player of the Year
Winner: Saba Donut
Other Contenders: Franklin Armstrong, Jay Cue, Mathias Hanyadi
I'm almost certain voters would go in a different direction here, but I'm going with Saba because I think the gap between him and the #2 WR is bigger than the gap between #1 and #2 at the other positions. If that makes sense.
Most Valuable Player
Winner: Franklin Armstrong
Other Contenders: Mo Berry
Best QB in the league on the team with the best record. It's kind of the standard formula for winning MVP.
