When attempting to define who is the more critical and beneficial player, kickers or quarterbacks, we must first look at the metric we are using to define critical and beneficial. In this case, critical and beneficial shall be defined as ‘Able to get the ball as far down the field as possible for the receiver’, and receiver shall be defined as, ‘the bestest boy or girl in the whole wide world,’ or, ‘who’s a good boy / girl’. Recognizing the importance of being able to get the ball as deeply down the field as possible for the goodest pupper is the only metric to define what makes for the best and more beneficial player.
Now, if we look at official NFL stats, especially for quarterbacks, it can be a little bit deceiving. Pass stats are not just at the whim of the quarterback, but also at the whim of their receivers. If the receivers cannot achieve enough distance from the quarterback, then the quarterback cannot make the throw of a length you are hoping for. Therefore, instead of looking at the average yards per throw that is created, we will instead view the list of hail mary passes (according to wikipedia) for the NFL, and utilize the longest pass thrown for the NSFL and DSFL quarterbacks.
In determining the length for kickers, we will look at the average of the punting stats, as well as the longest punt they have achieved. I don’t care if it comes slightly differently than the quarterbacks, it’s my analysis and I’m doing it this way.
Looking at the list of hail mary passes, there have been 36 attempted passes in college football and 27 attempted passes in professional football the wikipedia deems “Hail Marys”. Finding the average of these passes, we see that the average for college comes out to 49.58 yards and professional football comes to 45.33. Therefore, we can conclude that the average quarterback should be able to complete a pass of 45 to 49 yards for their bestest pupper.
If we begin to look at the statistics for kickers, punters within the NFL have grown better and better as time has gone on. For the 2019 season, NFL punters averaged 41.12 yards per punt. Compare this, however, with the longest punts that have occurred over the last twenty years, and we notice that punters have had an average maximum punt of 77.96 yards per punt.
These initial stats show that while NFL quarterbacks will average longer throws for the puppers, it is clear that if the winner of this is the all time length you can throw things for puppers then punters are clearly superior.
Now we should begin to examine NSFL statistics. The average for the longest pass of each NSFL quarterback comes out to: 52.75 yards per pass. On the other hand, though, the longest punt in the NSFL averages to 71.08 yards per punt. While once again, the average punt is shorter than the longest pass of each quarterback, it is still clear that under optimal circumstances, punters are able to kick a ball further than quarterbacks can throw the ball.
If you are looking and attempting to determine who are the best owners on the sole reason that they can throw or kick the ball further for the puppers, then Punters are the clear winners.
Every team should have two, for this reason. One for actually punting, and one for entertaining team puppers.
