The hype over the ISFL draft is building and media outlets across the league have set off to analyze the up and coming stars, with a strong rookie class that leaves plenty of room for discussion and an easy way to make educated guesses for the rankings. However, despite all the talent in this class, this crop of youngsters may not get their big day in the spotlight after a slew of threats from Thomas Passmann on Facebook caused alarm across the league, as he is threatening to, among other things, to bring "colorful and dangerous" fireworks to the event and "make the draft really explode into the headlines" and also threatening to take a bunch of prospects and scouts hostage to drink their blood and demand a ransom. The league, having seen Passmann's history of doing horrible things on camera, is taking these social media comments very seriously, although the Arizona Outlaws wide receiver now claims that he was just joking and that he had had a few too many drinks. Even if that is true, what if he has a few too many drinks on draft night and thinks it's a good idea to go through with these threats? You can not have a first overall or a mock draft if you do not have a mock; Passmann is really ruining this draft, this may be the most harm he has done to the league and its image yet. None of his heinous stunts have impacted the league's functions or resulted in direct harm to their players after all. Losing its newest and youngest members in a gigantic, vampiric explosion would be bad news, result in a lot of bad press, and lead to consequences long after the catastrophe is history. This is not the legacy the league wants, not after going through all the effort of rebranding and moving to a new web site.
A bunch of rookies expressed concern about attending the draft with Passmann's threats looming, and the league has already provided an option for players to attend virtually. The draft may be able to go on, but it might be in an online forum. Every pick done over the internet; can you imagine? How will the media cover such an event, how will they take a million pictures of the players heading up to the stage and standing with their new general managers, putting that new jersey with their name embroidered on it over their heads? It really would not be the same thing at all and would go against all the history of the league and its drafting traditions; everyone hopes that it will not come to that, but it is a better outcome than being sacrificial lambs at Passmann's slaughter.
"This just isn't how it's supposed to go, I can't play football if fireworks take off my arms and legs," said an anonymous rookie. "I just want to be drafted and go to a team in peace, the league needs to do the responsible thing and cancel the draft. They should have done it anyways because of the corona pandemic, but they wanted to go through with it. This is just a sign that that was the wrong decision. This can be done virtually and it can avoid a lot of bloodshed, tears, and tragedy. I would prefer not to have to lose my whole family to play professional football, so if we could make that the focus, that would be great. Draft day is supposed to be fun, not a time when you are constantly looking over your shoulder in fear and waiting for it all to go south. Some people are still acting like it's business as usual and it is no big deal but that is not the case, we need to be proactive and deal with this now. The vampire menace is ever a bigger threat to this land; we must cleanse the evil from our league and save our very souls."
Passmann also provided a statement on the incident on Twitter today that fueled even further controversy and trending discussions. It has since been taken down, but was screenshotted by many people, verified in an archive of the social media giant's databases, and read as follows,
"The draft is always awesome and really professionally managed, which is why explosions, chaos, and destruction would be the perfect way to celebrate the event and make it even better. What's wrong with spicing things up and bringing a new flavor to a storied league event? I won't apologize for saying I'll wreak havoc on the draft floor but I'm not going to do it, well I don't think so. Cancelling the draft would be a real shame, so I'll back down from my violence kick. Also the ISFL won't ban me, the media is such fake news, the Outlaws would be mad since they spent a pick on me and I am under contract for awhile. You can't take an asset away from a team without their permission, it would be just very not cool.I'll attack the league somewhere else in some other way, and don't think throwing me in jail on probably true charges will work to stop me, it just won't. You know it won't, even if I'm somehow convicted with my great lawyers, I'll have a jail break and continually evade the FBI and all their friends. You can not catch someone like me, I will slip through your fingers like sand. Vampires always win, I am inevitable," said Thomas Passmann. "Also I think Thanos definitely had the right idea and someone should give me an Infinity Gauntlet, I'd be happy to end half of humanity."
What will happen next? Will there be punishment from the government or the league for this latest incident? That is yet to be seen, but a bunch of ISFL fans are quite angry at Thomas Passmann, and rightfully so. He has already received a scolding phone call from his manager in Arizona according to our sources, and even if there's no official reprimand, I'm sure he'll be hearing from the league rules committee and head office to receive at least a firm warning. The FBI is also investigating his social media threats, so this may lead to even more charges being thrown at him. A judge really needs to throw the book at this guy if he ever gets convicted, this media outlet is starting to believe him when he says he will escape any charges and evade the FBI. He is proving quite elusive, but this instance certainly has plenty of hard evidence; what is said on the internet is there forever, permanently out there for the world to see. He should never have made such threats on social media, not a smart move at all; he had to have known it would sabotage or at least threaten the advancement of such an important and fun event. With such serious consequences, of course everyone is going to be taking it very seriously and closing in on him with real scrutiny and disapproval. The league will have to take some sort of action against him eventually if he continues to create public spectacles such as this one. He needs to be on his best behavior from now on if he wants to still be a part of this league come this time next year. He might think he can't be banned but people inside the league are not so sure, the idea has already been tossed around. If the Outlaws stop defending him, which they might be pretty close to doing since they are so fed up with his antics, Passmann will be done and gone from the league before you can say one, two, three. Talk about a crazy draft night, when people have said a draft is insane and chaotic, this is never what they had meant. Love him or hate him, you have to admit it, Passmann keeps thing fresh and interesting. Maybe, just maybe, the ISFL should be thanking him; with the possibility of an explosion or a kidnapping on live TV, there will be greatly increased viewership on draft night. That means more revenue and more public visibility for the league. Assuming this does not turn into a disaster of epic proportions, this whole drama might even help the league's notoriety and branding. This certainly is shaping up to be an exciting and shocking draft with all this drama, stay tuned for more media coverage and more live updates as draft week rolls on.
