Well the elephant in the room has finally been addressed publicly and expansion has been announced. With the success of the recent NFL recruitment we have reached a point where we need to add new teams so we can be sure that all these new players (and many others) have a place and home in the ISFL.
Interesting point we can see in this announcement is that expansion bids with an international team are being encouraged. No doubt in response to the recent name change to appear more 'international' and draw in and interest the 'international' crowd. I say 'international' in quotes, because as an 'international' user I never minded the more nothern american centric style of the league. I don't suddenly feel more embraced or into the league, because it now represents me in its name. On the flip flop I have also been here for 3 years, online daily, with 2 full players career, so I am also not the targeted audience for this change.
Too add onto that American Football is only really populair in well, America and Canada who knows their own kind of gridion football.
Anywho's to get to the real meat of this article I want to talk about locations I would love to see come forward in this expansion period and where I would like to potentially see a future team play.
As someone who likes a bit of creativity when it comes to teams, I will say that I mostly for this will be looking at teams in big foreign cities. I don't care for a team in New York while there are much more interesting and unique locations, but when it comes to international cities I feel like there is less room to get too creative as you do want cities that are populair enough.
So I'm going to be working through the continents and list a few places that make me think, hey this would be interesting.
Europe
I feel like Europe will likely be the continent that receives the most love when it comes to app or people doing thinking of brands. It makes sence, Europe and Northern America have a tight bond. We are what is considered the 'western world', there is a ton of trade between us and generally I think we get lumped together like that. There is also the link that we have had a NFL europe in the past and that the NFL plays games in London.
Amsterdam - I am a complete homer when it comes to this choice as I have lived in The Netherlands for the last 20ish years now, so putting a team here is something I am just going to do. Amsterdam is one of those cities that has a ton of name recognision. Ask a person if they know what the Netherlands is and they might struggle, mentioned Amsterdam and they will instantly know what you are talking about. Be extra cliche and make the team a reference to the sea given the Dutch history in sea commerse and give them the nickname of 'The Flying Dutchman'.
Asia
Tokyo - You know i had to do it to them. Asia is interesting, because you might instantly think of Japan, China or Korea. While Asia is actually a very large and diverse continent. You could go a bit more central asia and pick an India (hello Bombai Rotisserie Chickens), go to the middle east and have a team or head to the south east and look at Bangkok, Jakarta or a city state like Singapore. Personally I have to go with Tokyo, as I have a huge affinity with the country of Japan. Honestly this one is not too creative as Japan also probably has one of the biggest foreign american football leagues in the X-League, but heck I gotta do it regardless.
Oceania
Brisbane - Oceania feel like one of the most straight forward continents to place a team in. You either place it in Australia or you go cheeky and go New Zealand. No other country in Oceania really has the population or realism you are looking for when placing your international sports team. Rugby is huge in these countries so the crossover into American Football should be one that is do-able. Austria has 3 options that really stand out with Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane (rip Perth and Gold Coast). Personally I have fond memories of picking up this german fellow from the Brisbane Roar in Fifa 13 when I was managing Real Salt Lake. Totally unrelated, but since that moment I have always considered Brisbane to be my go to Austrian city. Sydney and Melbourne I would argue are the more 'realistic' choices, but in a list that is already going to kinda be dominated by realism, I will throw a cheeky jab here and there.
Special shout out to Papua New Guinea, who I didnt know was actually a part of Oceania and not Asia.
Africa
Antananarivo - We are going full Toronto Raptors here, maybe we are like 15 years too late, but we are going to capitalize on a huge movie by putting a team here and centering it's branding around it. Ofcourse I am talking about the hit movie Madagascar, which follows the absolute crazy shenanigans of Ego the Tiger, Eddie Murphy the Zebra, Anxiety the Giraffe and dummy thicc the hippo. Madagascar is a great country to put a ISFL team in just because of how recogniseable it is. Where else in africa are you going to put a team? Cairo, Egypt? Yeah have fun playing football in 40 degrees celcius. South Africa? I mean ignore the fact they recently won a Rugby World Cup and the long history of rugby there, which was the reason I gave Australia and Japan the earlier shoutouts.... wait when did this become a shit post.
South America
Lima - Listen if there are two things in this world I want to do, it's visit Machu Picchu and pet an Alpaca. I can do both those things in Peru. That brings us to Lima, where we can put the clichely named Lima Llama's. Peru is a bit of a crazy thing here. You would think a place like Brasil with this fanatic football fans, could maybe get behind the other kind of football and bring in huge crowds to hear for there team. Maybe Argentina or Chile as places? Which sure I was also considering those places, but you know this is my list. I do not have to list out good reasons why I want places where oke.
Anyways, those are my choices for 'international' teams. Will any of these get picked, who knows, will I inspire anyone? Probably not. However I still wanted to write a bit of media today with all the new buzz going around.
I can't wait to see all y'all edgy submissions.
Also if we don't go international, let's go Bismarck Supernovas!
Me: I want to see realistic teams
Also me: haha madagascar
