Holloway Mulls Future After Rough Outing
Myrtle Beach Quarterback talks trying Wide Receiver, QB Hopes
MYRTLE BEACH — Owen Holloway was not shy about exactly how he viewed himself during the DSFL’s scouting window. His intentions ahead of the DSFL Draft were perfectly clear: he believed he was a professional caliber quarterback. A much less self-assured player took questions following the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers’ ugly 16-point loss at the hands of the Tijuana Luchadores. Holloway had a nightmare performance, completing just 5-of-14 pass attempts for 52 yards, an interception, and just one yard on three rushing attempts. For reference, if a quarterback throws an incomplete pass on every throw, they will have a Passer Rating of 39.6. Owen Holloway registered a 17.6 against the Luchadores. It was certainly not the type of performance Myrtle Beach expected from the mobile half of their quarterback platoon.
Many reporters were eager to question the former Golden Flash’s dedication to the position after a performance in which he looked in over his head. When asked if he still believed he has what it takes to play quarterback in this league, Holloway responded “There’s no doubt in my mind about that, but that’s not really the question that needs answering as far as I’m concerned. I owe it to my teammates and the Bucs fans to do whatever it takes to help this team win, and I can’t help but feel after tonight that my playing quarterback is not the best thing to accomplish that. At the same time I have nothing but confidence in my ability to play the position, but it’s an incredibly steep learning curve. I feel a little newer to the position than some other guys might because my time playing the position in college was disrupted by coaching changes and my feeling like I was being pulled in different directions in terms of how each of them viewed my role in their offense. I felt like I never even really got my feet wet. And I feel like I owe it to myself to try this. So, the short answer to your question is yes, but the long version is a little more complicated. It’s tough, man. Just tough.”
A follow-up question asked of Holloway what positions he believed he could naturally transition to mid-season if he wasn’t going to be a quarterback for Myrtle Beach. Holloway said that for most of his high school and college career, he had been pressed to give wide receiver a shot, adding that he thinks it’s a natural fit not just athletically, but also in terms of being able to pick up the responsibilities of the position on the fly as he’s familiar with the team’s route trees as a quarterback. He even said he would be willing to start taking some reps out wide in practice if that was a move that the coaching staff thought might be necessary, saying “Obviously I want to do whatever I have to to help us win. If the coaches think that’s me playing wide receiver, I’ll have a tough decision to make personally, but it’s something I’m open to. My only requirement for something like that is really that if we’re going to do it, we don’t go half way. You know, I don’t want to be splitting practice reps that I could use to improve as a quarterback if we haven’t already agreed on my splitting out wide. So we’re maybe not quite at the point where that decision is being made, but if or when we get there I want to go all in on whatever that decision is.”
For now it seems difficult to envision Owen Holloway sticking as a quarterback as he moves forward. He’s been clearly outplayed by platoon-mate Jackie Daytona through two games, and the SFC is expected to be an incredibly tight race with the reigning champs expected to win the conference once again. That leaves just once spot for Tijuana, Myrtle Beach, and Dallas. Still, if Holloway believes the best path forward is still quarterback, it’s not an unfair question to wonder what ISFL team could possibly be interested in a more developmental project. Holloway’s belief is that the league’s impending expansion could offer him his best opportunity to remain under center as a pro. With two teams set to join the league, and the small collection of existing quarterback prospects being the presumptive future of their teams, there may well be a demand for quarterbacks in the coming draft, and there are not many in this upcoming draft class. Holloway even mentioned that regardless of his position, he believes that an expansion team would be his preferred destination. The league has yet to announce details on the expansion process beyond the fact that it is underway, but it certainly appears as if Holloway’s decision on his own future may well be decided by how those teams begin to take shape over the coming weeks. For now, he’ll simply work toward improving on his recent performance in an upcoming home game against London.
