Here's a quick summary of each team's performances and a power ranking on the back of week 3.
There was only one team in the whole league who lost both of their week 2 and 3 games. That, I'm afraid to say, is the London Royals. With the league being a "what have you done for me lately" sort of league, it immediately puts them in bottom position of 1-2-0 teams. There really isn't much to split them so some of this may be slightly arbitrary.
As you'll see I ran out of time.
8. London Royals 1-2-0
Week 2: Loss to Portland Pythons in London 23-10
Week 2 saw the Royals hosting the (previously bottom of the rankings) Portland Pythons in a rematch from week 1 of the preseason. The Royals looked to put the past in the past and started off very strong with their first drive getting topped off by a Terry Yaki rushing touchdown. That happened to be the highlight of the night for London as it really forced the Pythons to pick up their game. The Pythons defense came up with some huge defensive sets and shut out London until early in the 4th quarter when Fencik was allowed a shot at a field goal. The London defensive rookies have yet to really show off instead being overshadowed by number one pick, Domine and veteran Andrews performance. Their were a few highlights though with Cadaires 2 sacks and a tackle for loss alongside Ruschmanns tackle for loss. The rest of the game was dominated by Portland's rushing and kicking game with the Pythons finishing as eventual 23-10 winners in a shock road victory.
Week 3: Loss to the Buccaneers in Myrtle Beach 13-0
Week 3 was a sordid affair for the Royals, travelling to South Carolina for a matchup with the Buccaneers. Both teams came into the week sitting at 1-1after poor performances the previous week. It was clear from the off this game was going to be a defensive battle with neither offense showing up. Their isn't much to say on the Lions for this game. They were left scoreless. They gave away too many penalties and once again their rookies didn't really pop on the stat sheet. The Buccaneers overcame the Lions 13-0 in probably the ugliest game from the 2 week period.
The Royals will be looking to break their 2 game losing streak when they head back to London, this time hosting the Dallas Birddogs.
7. Portland Pythons 1-2-0
Week 2: Win over London Royals in London 23-10
The Pythons get to rise from bottom of the table due in full to this win over the pond in London, England.
The pythons started as poorly as can be, gifting the Royals a rushing touchdown on the first drive of the game. Some teams would be killed by this, going down one touchdown away from home to a "better" team can be a death sentence to some teams. On this occasion however, the Pythons rallied together and put together a couple of decent drives to complete the rest of the half, relying on the boot of Pseudo QB to take them into the Locker room ahead. The Pythons capped the day with a couple of rushing touchdowns, one from Christiansen and one from the recently converted Darren Pama.
There were a couple of big performances from the Pythons defence as well -, most notably 11 tackles for martinsson, first overal pick Lavigne snatching an interception and linebacker Mcbobby playing lights out with 2 sacks a pass break up and an interception.
Week 3: Loss to Minnesota Grey Ducks in Portland 19-15
Week 3 saw the arrival of the Grey ducks in Portland. This should have been Portland's easiest game so far with the Grey Ducks yet to pick up a victory in the league. In true Pythons fashion that is not how the day turned out. The Pythons once again relied heavily on the boot of Pseudo QB in the early exchanges of the game with both teams exchanging field goals. The difference maker in the game came when the grey ducks broke the whitewash and managed to make it into the endzone to take a 13-9 lead into half time. Portland could never quite overcome the deficit and eventually fell to the Ducks 19-15.
With this being a rather defensively oriented game, the standout for the Pythons came in the strange form of third string linebacker Smith, who register 11 tackles and forced two fumbles. Both of which were recovered by Portland.
6. Minnesota Grey Ducks 1-2-0
Week 2: Loss to Norfolk SeaWolves in Norfolk 20-0
When it comes to power rankings in this league the SeaWolves need to be treated differently. Last year's winners, Norfolk have not lost too many players - this has made sure that they are still fairly dominant this year. For that reason a loss to them doesn't get reflected poorly against your team as much as a loss to any other team would. That being said, the ducks lost fairly spectacularly. It wasn't due to the defence though, who performed a bend don't break strategy fairly well only allowing one offensive touch down. The other of Norfolk's touchdowns came from a long range punt return which is attributed to the special teams unit. As per usual, ducks stalwart Alejandro Chainbreaker lead from the front with a game leading 11 tackles and Wasrabi Gleel performed well grabbing a well deserved INT. If the offense had performed up to scratch this game could have turned out differently.
Week 3: Win over Portland Pythons in Portland 19-15
After starting off 0-2 the Grey Ducks were able to put in a quality performance over the Portland Pythons away from home here. The Pythons were heavy favourites coming off their away win to London, so this looked like a done deal. More of a formality than a game. Chainbreaker and co had other ideas however. The ducks defense fronted up brilliantly, forcing Portland to kick 3 field goals in the first half. This allowed the ducks to go into the half leading thanks to a short touchdown throw to Akerele. The aforementioned Chainbreaker was the player of the game notching up 9 tackles 1 for loss and 1 sack. On offense it feels only right to give the kicker the honours for keeping his cool in the away stadium.
5. Kansas City Coyotes 1-2-0
Week 2: Loss to Dallas Birddogs in Dallas 24-21
In week 2 the Coyotes travelled to Dallas. This was a hotly awaited contest on the back of Kansas City's Offensive lineman Felix Archstone spouting his mouth on Twitter. Unfortunately for Archstone he was left with a large amount of egg on his chin when QB Covington III ended up on his back multiple times. The Coyotes found themselves in a 10-0 hole in the first quarter when Dallas took an interception to the house. They were able to claw back into the game with a Sergio Kitchens 3 yard rumble over midway through the second quarter going into the half at a 3 point deficit. The second half both teams went toe to toe, Dallas would score then the Coyotes would score back. Cooper got himself into the endzone off a 6 yard reception and Campbell scored in garbage time from a 17 yard reception. This made the game look closer than it rightly needed to.
Week 3: Win over Tijuana Luchadores in Kansas 41-35 Game of the week
Even though they have 0 wins in their conference Kansas are this high in the power rankings as the only NFC team with a victory over an SFC team. Tijuana were marginal favourites due to being away from home but with the superior team. This game went all the way down to the wire. The game itself didn't start well for Kansas City with the Luchadores going up 21-7 in the first half. The only point for the coyotes coming from a 3 yard pass to Joshua Campbell in the endzone. The coyotes didn't let this lead faze them, scoring three quick fire touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to stun the Luchadores into what should have been an early submission, one through rookie RB and Egyptian King Tut, and another two from the aforementioned Campbell. Not to be outdone, the Luchadores scored two late in the third and early in the fourth to take the lead 35-28. Sergio Kitchens manages to punch the ball into the endzone to force overtime for the Coyotes. Overtime was finished in a flash when griddle his second interception of the day and gave perfect field position for Kitchens to catch a touch down in the endzone this time. Standout performances on the defensive side came from Griddle with two big interceptions and Yeboah with his six tackles and a sack.
4. Dallas Birddogs 1-2-0
Week 2: Win over Kansas City Coyotes in Dallas 24-21
Two week one 0-1 teams meeting up in Dallas doesn't sound like the makings of a classic game, however this one made for a tight defensive affair. Neither team started the game well with the coyotes having to punt on three successive drives and the Birddogs first two drives ending in an interception and punt, it took until the Dallas Birddogs third drive for any points to be put on the board. A big punt return and one pass later the Birddogs were in field goal territory. Fortunately Kicky Man was able to slot the kick. The Coyotes next drive started off well, quickly marching into Birddogs territory. All the good was undone when Blackwell of the Dallas defense picked off Covington on the 29 yard line, returning the interception 71 yards for the defensive touchdown. This play in particular helped him attain the defensive game ball. The second quarter was a quieter affair for Dallas with their two drives ending in a punt and missed field goal. The coyotes on the other hand were able to put up points early in the quarter meaning the Birddogs took a fragile 10-7 lead into the locker room at half time. The second half started well for both offenses with each managing to extend the clock on their drives with the Birddogs topping theirs off with a Zoe Watts touchdown and the Coyotes hitting straight back with their own. Dallas's next drive took them into the 4th quarter where outstanding performer Watts was once again able to rush in for her second touchdown of the night to give Dallas the coveted 2 score lead. Kansas were able to score the garbagiest of garbage time touchdowns with 6 seconds on the clock. Too little too late and Dallas were able to put up the W going into week 3. In addition to Blackwell; Rumper, Crowder and leaking all had big games defensively registering a sack each.
Week 3: Loss to Norfolk SeaWolves in Dallas 37-17
I respect the majority of the Norfolk seawolves a lot however the score in this game doesn't quite reflect the full run of play. Don't get me wrong the SeaWolves were worthy winners but the match was definitely tighter than the game score suggests. The first half was certainly a lot tighter than you would assume. The teams went blow for blow with kicky man opening up the scoring before Norfolk scored at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw Raimon snatching an early TD catch to take the lead. Norfolk hit straight back only for Dallas to take the lead again through a 14 yard scramble from calliban. That was when the offense faltered and the SeaWolves took over the game. The SeaWolves leveled at half time and scored 20 unanswered points in the second half as Dallas struggled to find their footing again. Rumper and fields led the team in tackles with Rumper getting the defensive game ball for his pass defend. Dallas will hope to rebound in London but with little time to acclimatise to the British time zone they will be starting the game on the back foot.
3. Myrtle Beach Buccaneers 2-1-0
Week 2: Loss to Tijuana Luchadores in Tijuana 22-6
The buccaneers first game of the week was in an away game in Mexico. The luchadores put in a great first performance against Dallas and appear to have carried that into week 2 hiding Myrtle beach to just 6 points. There isn't much to say about the buccaneers performance here Woods on defence stood out with 11 tackles with Goat Tank and heights both registering sacks.
Week 3: Win over London Royals in South Carolina 13-0
A much more convincing win was that over the London royals. This was a heavily defensive affair with only 1 TD in the game which came mid way through the first quarter courtesy of a 2 yard run from Jeffrey. The rest of the points came from Broomfields boot. It was a much better performance from the defence with the buccs registering 4 sacks and 4 tfls. Highlights were light, sternum and burfict.
2. Tijuana Luchadores 2-1-0
Week 2: Win over Myrtle beach Buccaneers in Tijuana 22-6
Tijuana picked up where they left the Birddogs in week 1 when they hosted myrtle beach. The defence performed admirably keeping the buccs down to 2 field goals. A pair of touchdown throws by Boss Jr helped this respectable score one to ex New Zealand winger doug howlett and one to Vequain. The standout performer in this game came from Tijuanas Schell who recorded 12 tackles and 2 tackled for loss to really shut down myrtle beach.
Week 3:Loss to Kansas City Coyotes in Kansas 41-35 Game of the week
This was definitely game of the week and possibly could be game of the season. Neither defense shined, Schell had another 11 tackle game and also a sack to add to his list if season stats.
It was in offense though where we can find the player of the game. Crowbar Theeks with 3 separate rushing touchdowns was by far player of the game. Mills and vequain rounded off the scoring. The luchadores fell in heartbreaking fashion to the coyotes with an overtime turnover.
1. Norfolk SeaWolves 2-1-0
Week 2: Win over Minnesota Grey Ducks in Norfolk 20-0
A shut out of the Grey ducks was a great start of the week for Norfolk. Harley Frank and Rickie Vaughne were the two on the score sheet but that didn't matter, the player of the game was Rusty rucker on defense racking up a tfl and a sack.
Week 3: Win over Dallas Birddogs in Dallas 37-17
One person earned this win for the SeaWolves and it was once again Rusty Rucker. Racking up 9 tackles and a sack, rucker was once again a sight to be hold. A cheat code on Norfolks defense.
Players on the score sheet for Norfolk:
Rogers
Johnson
Matthews x2
And Harley Frank.
Fun fact Norfolk have won all games by 20. As you can probably tell. I wanted to get this out before I may have to put the birddogs in the bottom half. Sorry for the change in pace.
