Pepe Silvia here again for the Gazette with a Myrtle Beach week 4 post game analysis. This game was absolutely wild and saw several turnovers as the Seawolves went on to win 44-21 over the visiting Buccaneers. When reached for comment on the season so far, GM Thor had this to say:
“We are in a good position. If we can steal an away game and keep winning home games we’ll be in with a good shot.”
Offense: C
Let’s start with the elephant in the room. Almost no one had a standout game on offense, and how could they when there was a season high 5 turnovers on the night. I’m going to chalk it up to bad seafood taking its toll on the players mentally. There were some bright spots though, that show a promising remainder of the season outlook. If you take away those turnovers, it’s easy to rate this group higher.
QBs – D-
Earlier this week rookie QB Owen Holloway released a press conference indicating he was considering a position swap in preparation for his future in the ISFL. Many were surprised by the statement with him having a good start to the season through week 3. But then week 4 happened, where it was a tale of Jekyll and Hyde for Holloway. His talent was clearly on display early when he took a designed QB run 56 yards to the house to put the Buccs back into a 1 score game. He also contributed to almost half the teams total rushing yards on the night with 114 yards on 11 carries (That is an absurd 10.4 YPC). Unfortunately, that was an extreme contrast to his passing game, going on to post an 8.9 QBR with 3 interceptions (2 of them back to back were returned for touchdowns). This seems to just be a nightmare game hiccup against a top team, so there is still a plethora of optimism for this young prospect going forward.
Jackie Daytona only had 9 passing attempts, completing 4 of them. While the volume wasn’t there for the night, he was efficient with 51 yards and 2 passing touchdowns. Joining his teammate Holloway, he also threw a pick for solidarity. Overall, not a terrible game from him, but needs to take care of the ball better as his opportunities increase.
RBs – B-
Running back was one of the few high points for the night, proving to be an effective way of moving the ball consistently. The group put up a respectable 134 yards on 32 carries, which averages out to 4.2 YPC.
3’ Jeffrey, true to his name, was slippery between the tackles and posted a 3.9 average. The glaring issue is giving up a fumble on the MB 10-yard line to open the game. After that he secured the rock and looked more himself. He also had 1 reception for no gain. Not his best game, but he certainly had a positive impact on the game. Look for his stock to rise as the season continues.
WR – B-
It’s hard to judge the receivers when they have limited volume like last night, but overall, they did well with what they were given. The 2 rookies posted a combined 93 yards on 6 receptions with a TD apiece.
Zach Crossley got the majority of the work with his 4 receptions going for 44 yards, even breaking off a 16 yarder on one. His 10-yard td in the 2nd tied the game up going into halftime. He was efficient as well, posting no drops on the night. Expect to see him grow as the QB play returns to normal.
Alex Reed was the more electric of the duo, putting up 24.5 YPC with a long of 27. Being the speedy deep threat, he had slightly less volume, but also had a drop on the night. His 27 yard reception in the 4th was after the game had been put out of reach for the Buccs, but it was a good stat contribution from him.
TE – C
The TE group was largely unnoticed for most of the night, catching 2 balls as a group while blocking well throughout the game.
Standout TE Ne Mo was largely absent in the passing game with no catches and a drop on his 5 targets. This was a rare night in that regard, and hopefully he gets back in sync with his QBs to continue posting big numbers in the passing game next week.
Rookie McJimmerson had a quiet receiving night as well, catching 1 ball on 4 targets. He did show some positive growth in the blocking game en route to posting 3 pancakes.
Gabr Spladle quietly contributed a catch and a pancake in a rotational role.
OL – B
O-line was a pretty standard night for the Buccs. They have continued to play well and open up lanes for the runners, while not giving up sacks on the QB.
Medicinal Toblerone had a game high 5 pancakes, and has become a stalwart in the trenches for Myrtle Beach. Toblerone is also very disciplined and didn’t commit a penalty in the noisy hostile road game.
Krishna was also effective in the blocking game, posting 2 pancakes and no sacks as well.
Defense - B
Defensively, the scoreboard very much does not reflect the play on the field. The group was constantly in awful field position, and weren't on the field at all for 2 of the TDs. When given a normal starting position, the Buccaneers defense played admirably.
DB – B+
The DB’s as a collective group played admirable throughout the game, not allowing a reception of over 22 yards. They employed a very strong bend but don’t break mentality giving up only 70 receiving yards on the night to a highly rated Seawolves attack.
Starting Safety Zach Mouse stood out the most within the group, logging a pass defense, 5 tackles, and the sole interception on the night for the DB group.
Starting CB Brendan Kennedy had a strong night as well, lodging 5 tackles, the only Myrtle Beach sack, and a forced fumble that was unfortunately recovered by the ball carrier.
Teddy Utterstruzen had a slower night in his rookie campaign, contributing a pass defense and tackle.
There was promising growth seen this week by James Hoffman, where he did not allow any large gains in his coverage, and contributed 3 sacks en route to putting a stranglehold on the Seawolves passing unit.
LB – C+
The linebacking corps for the Buccaneers had a pretty solid night where they did not see any turnovers, but also showed a strong ability to wrap up the ball carrier. They were not active in the passing game, but weren't really needed to be. The issue that was clear as day was the allowance of a 4.6 YPC to the opposing rushing attack.
The veteran Tyrone woods led the team in tackles for the night with 9, while rookies Jackson and Winchester both tallied 6. Winchester also showed a nose for the ball when he had a forced fumble in the 2nd quarter, which was recovered by the ball carrier.
DL – G for Goat Tank (B)
The defensive line for the Buccs showed some burst in week 4, getting 5 tackles for loss on the night. They kept pressure on the QB for most of the night, but the Seawolves game plan seemed to revolve around the rushing attack. It’s possible that they need to focus on recognizing which gaps to seal to give the linebackers a better shot at stopping the runner earlier, but overall, the line played well.
The veteran Arlington Heights was the standout at DE, with an impressive 3 solo TFL.
K/P - A
Bloomfield was pretty perfect on the night when called upon, trapping Norfolk inside the 20 on 50% of his punts, and hitting all of his placekicking duties flawlessly with 3 extra points.
As always, the sky is the limit for this team going forward. But if they want to keep getting free passes to Captain Georges down on 29th street, they need to bring home wins in tight games like this.
Go Buccs.
