Lets talk about what cool stuff these team names have in store for the cities. I don’t actually know why the mascots were chosen so I’m going to do my best to apply it to the city and give the teams ideas.
Getting started with the New York Silverbacks the first thing I found to relate Silverbacks to New York is a giant statue. The statue is located in Hudson Yards’ Bella Abzug Park. It was made to raise awareness and funds for the endangered gorilla species. This thing is absolutely massive. It is the world’s largest bronze gorilla sculpture. I’d reason to guess it is the only bronze gorilla sculpture but that’s just me. This thing weighs 4700 pounds. Like that’s a lot. It can fit 2-3 humans inside just its hands if that gives you an idea of how big it is. The statue's name is King Nyani which is Swahili for gorilla. My favorite part about the statue is that the gorilla is in the, “Draw me like one of your french girls poses.” The next thing I found to relate the Silverbacks to New York was the Bronx Zoo. This was honestly the only thing I thought I was going to find but then there just happens to be a massive bronze statue. The zoo has a Congo Gorilla Forest where they are featured alongside Mandrills and Okapis. There are currently 20 gorillas in the Gorilla Forest. They are led by Ernie the silverback gorilla. He has so far sired 5 more gorillas in the exhibit making. Their names are Lincoln, Chase, Kidogo Njemba, Kamara, and Mjukuu. Most football teams have 6 captains. Maybe the captains could have patches with these gorillas names on them. The “main” captain could have Ernie’s name patched onto his uniform. Something else the New York Silverbacks could do with player experience. Most male gorillas become silverbacks at around age 13. If they happen to have a player who has been around for 13 years, might have to include DSFL years, they could add something unique to that players shoulder pads. The last thing I found in New York was some restaurants. The Green Gorilla Kitchen is a Vegan restaurant with some tasty looking comfort food. I can’t find a menu but there are pictures of burritos and burgers that look awesome. The second restaurant is a coffee shop called the Vanilla Gorilla Cafe. They have all your standard coffee shop hot beverages and iced beverages. They also have these divine looking Pastrinos. One of them has caramelized bananas and nutella in it. Yum. The team better start going there on gameday mornings. The third restaurant is a korean barbeque called Gorilla Grill. They also don’t have a menu but it looks hibachi style. Team could have a fun after party there. The last restaurant is another coffee shop called Gorilla Coffee. This cafe seems a lot more traditional to where gorillas are typically found. They pull ingredients for their coffee from places such as Sumatra, Rwanda, Guatemala and many more. There isn’t any food here so it might turn into a place the players can take their Tinder dates.
Moving onto the Berlin Fire Salamanders the first thing I had to do was google what the hell a fire salamander was. Apparently they’re the best known salamander species in Europe. The most searched question about them was asking if they are resistant to fire, which apparently they are. The salamander can actually extinguish them. The team can use this stadium sounds if they are making a comeback, essentially putting out the other teams fire with how cold-blooded they are. I really couldn’t find much about them relating them to Germany other than the fact that they are there. They are mostly found in central and southwest Germany and nowhere near Berlin. Something crazy that happened with the salamander population is that they were almost wiped out back in 2017 by a flesh eating fungi. That doesn’t sound fun at all. The fungi causes skin ulcers and tumors that make the salamander susceptible to other diseases. The salamander epidemic wiped out 90% of the population before being wiped out. Maybe opposing teams could bring mushrooms for good luck against the Berlin Fire Salamanders, but that is a little messed up. Overall I’m not sure why they went with the fire salamanders. The only thing connected them to Berlin is the fact that they are in Germany, but not near Berlin. I would have chosen something to do with bears if I made a team in Berlin. The bear appears in Berlin's coat of arms and it is linked the folk etymology to the german word for bear, bär. It would’ve given you a reason to go to the bars and chant your team name.
Wrapping this up I like the Silverbacks name more than the Fire Salamanders. I could find stuff relating New York to Silverbacks such as the highly successful gorilla exhibit. Fire Salamanders seems like it might’ve been the first cool sounding animal to come to their head. If I’m missing something about Berlin let me know.
