Welcome to the “Player of the Week” awards for week 2 of ISFL S25. Again, note that these are not official awards and are only my opinions. If you think differently, write your own damn media article. I will be naming who I think is the best player on both sides of the ball along with a few runners up, and also notable players who contributed on special teams.
First up, let's take a look at the players with the best offensive performances in ASFC:
This week's offensive MVP is again a running back. In their trouncing of the New Orleans Second Line, Honolulu Hahalua running back Keʻokeʻo Kāne-Maikaʻi racked up an impressive 122 yards on 25 carries on the ground, for an average of 4.9 ypc. Kāne-Maikaʻi also had 5 receptions for 64 yards receiving and a whopping 4 total touchdowns, 3 rushing and 1 receiving. The Hahalua would go on to beat the Second Line 55-27, thanks in part to their star running back’s 186 scrimmage yards.
Also with an impressive week was Honolulu’s quarterback Luke Skywalker, with 267 passing yards and 4 touchdowns for a 105.4 passer rating. New York Silverbacks quarterback Sam Howitzer continues to impress, having another outstanding game with 310 passing yards and 2 touchdowns for a 117.6 passer rating. Unfortunately, the Silverbacks would go on to lose 31-27 to the Orange County Otters on a last minute score. Silverbacks running back Ashley Owens also had an impressive gain, with 163 total yards (100 rushing, 63 receiving,) but unfortunately no scores. Otters wide receiver Future Trunks played well and had 5 receptions for 126 yards and a score as well. Our final offensive star this week was Arizona Outlaws wide receiver Thomas Passman who had 119 yards on 5 receptions and a touchdown.
The outstanding defensive player of the week award goes to Second Line linebacker Busch Light. On top of an already notable defensive performance of 9 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pass deflection, Light also added a 27 yard pick six in the 4th quarter of New Orleans’ loss to Honolulu. Unfortunately this didn’t add up for a NOLA win, but they still have to be pleased with their rookie’s performance.
Also with a great week on defense was Otters linebacker Deshun Jones, who had a whopping 11 tackles and if that wasn’t enough, forced and recovered a fumble at the Otters 12 yard line, stopping a Silverbacks offensive drive that could have changed the game’s outcome. San Jose Sabercats rookie cornerback Rashad Hilliard had an outstanding game with six tackles and a 27 yard interception return for a touchdown. Finally, Sabercats linebacker Tyron Brackenridge had a heck of a game with 7 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 pass deflection, and 1 interception.
Finally, special teams player of the week goes to Honolulu kicker/punter Venus Powers, who was 100% on extra points, going 7 for 7 and 2 40 yard field goals. Powers only had to punt twice for a total of 70 yards.
Who was the NFSC offensive player of the week? Honestly, there were a lot of low scoring games in the NFSC this week, and not really a whole lot of just outstanding offensive play. This weeks NFSC player of the week goes to Baltimore Hawks rookie wide receiver Doug Howlett, who managed another impressive game with 7 catches for 115 yards, which makes him the league leader in receiving yards with a total of 244. Unfortunately Howlett has been unable to find the end zone thus far. Another promising rookie, Colorado Yeti tight end Dave Batista posted 105 receiving yards on 9 catches in their loss to the Chicago Butchers.
This week's NFSC outstanding defensive player of the week award goes to Hawks defensive end Matt Hole. Hole continues to build on an impressive season, this week with 6 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a sack. Hole also forced and recovered a fumble. Hole currently leads the ISFL for 4 tackles for loss. Unfortunately for Hole, the Hawks lost 23-6 to the Yellowknife Wraiths.
Other impressive defensive players this week are Berlin Fire Salamanders linebacker Adam Schell, who had 9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and forced 1 fumble. Philadelphia Liberty cornerback Brandon Booker had 2 interceptions, to go along with 2 more pass deflections and 5 tackles. Finally Wraiths safety capped off a 3 tackle and 1 pass deflection effort with a 33 yard pick six
EDIT: Apparently staring at indexes for too long does things to a man and I missed Philadelphia Liberty kicker/punter Jake Fencik hitting the game winning field goal with only 29 seconds left in the game. I’m not too proud to admit I missed that one. Jake can add special teams player of the week to his resume now. That and $3 at the gas station will get you a Monster. @xenosthelegend
Other notable and outstanding special teams performances for this week goes to Sarasota Sailfish running back Raphtalia Chan who had an impressive 71 yard punt return at the end of the first quarter of Sarasota’s win over the Fire Salamanders. It was the only non-field goal score of a pretty low scoring game. Also notable was Wraiths kicker, Blago Kokot, who was 100% on extra points, going 2 for 2, with field goals of 40, 19, and 27 yards.
Once again, thanks for reading this! Tune in soon for the next edition.
