Five days ago, I posted this tweet and it received an overwhelming response. Because of that, I've decided to split this article into multiple parts as we start the T.R.M. (Twitter Requested Media) series.
What could be more fun than talking about some of the league's most notable players? Nothing!
Right now this will be the second of three parts, but if you want to be included in the next version, simply reply to the tweet that I'll put out once this is posted. If you have already responded, I have not forgotten about you! I wanted to put these out at semi-regular intervals instead of waiting too long with one long post.
Let’s get this kicked off with the fiery Berlin running back, Joseph Petrongolo @Jo3fish5 . He’s currently 7th in the league in rushing yards (554) and is the third-leading Fire Salamander in receiving yards (319). By every measure, he is the premier all-purpose back in the league and one of the main reasons Berlin is just a couple games out of playoff contention. He’s had 100+ total yards in six of eight games this season and has been especially hot in the last three, totalling 351 yards from scrimmage. Mr. Do-It-All is a piece that Berlin can build around for years to come.
From one last-named-player-with-a-g, we’ll move on to another in Wasrabi Gleel @Crodyman of the Minnesota Grey Ducks. Gleel is second on the team in tackles with 33 and has thrown on a sack, tackle for loss, and pair of pass deflections for good measure. He’s really hit his stride the last three weeks with 17 tackles and has cemented himself as one of the hottest linebackers in the DSFL. The Grey Ducks are legitimate Ultimini contenders and they’ll go as far as elite playmakers like Gleel can take them. Keep your head on a swivel if you’re going over the middle against Minny.
While there may not be safety across the middle against Gleel, there is a safety in Kansas City who’s just as dangerous. Coyotes’ Tony Yeboah @frazzle14 is the prototypical hard-hitting safety that every team needs. He can do anything his defensive coordinator asks, as evidenced by his four sacks, two pass deflections, and 22 tackles on the season. He was unstoppable last week in their close win over Tijuana as he tallied two second-half sacks that were crucial in the 16-10 victory. Whether it’s run-fills, patrolling the deep middle, or flying down in a safety blitz, Yeboah can do it all. This future Baltimore man will be making waves early and often in the ISFL.
Speaking of the ISFL, let’s go there right now and talk about Pete Miller @BRNXB0MBERS of the Arizona Outlaws. Built like a straight up tank, Miller is an offensive lineman’s worst nightmare. He’s already sacked the quarterback on three occasions and has broken through the line for a couple of tackles for loss. Miller is also one of the main reasons why the Outlaws are fourth in all of football in fewest points allowed. He can eat up double-teams, bull-rush the quarterback, and throw around offensive guards like rag dolls. It’s not always the sexiest position, but when it comes doing the dirty work and giving his team the best chance of winning, give me a versatile DT like Miller every day of the week.
There hasn’t been much kicker love so far, so let’s head across the pond to Berlin and Karmichael Hunt @"simo_393". He’s one of just two kickers who have 15+ attempts and not missed a single field goal this season. Hunt also has the second-longest field goal this year (56) and has been all sorts of money for the Fire Salamanders. He made an instant impact for Berlin, as he booted the game winner in Week 1 to give them their first ever victory. Last week, he made four field goals and accounted for all of their scoring as the Fire Salamanders upset the defending Ultimus Champion San Jose Sabercats. He’s a weapon of the highest order for his newly formed franchise and will be making clutch kicks for years to come.
We’ll go back to defensive tackles here with Rapid Eagle @rapideagle of the Orange County Otters. Eagle has been wreaking havoc on opposing offenses all season for the first-place Otters. He’s tied for fifth among all players in sacks (6) and has five tackles for loss. In his last three games, he’s racked up 17 tackles, four TFL, and has been as dominant as any DL in the league lately. The former Illini standout has been unblockable for the league’s best team and appears to be en route to the Pro Bowl. When the Otters make the Ultimus, look for Eagle to play a big role in that postseason run.
Speaking of havoc, how about the DSFL’s leading tackler? Richard Leaking @ReverendOReily of the Dallas Birddogs has been all over the field so far this season and leads all players with 71 tackles. He also has five tackles for loss, showing both his range and versatility. In their Week 4 clash with Kansas City, he posted an insane 18 tackles, which is more tackles than some players have all season. Highly productive, intelligent, and with speed for days, Leaking looks like a future ISFL Hall of Famer. He’ll soon be an Otter, but his impact in the DSFL won’t be forgotten.
From a semi-aquatic mascot, we now transition to the fully aquatic. Sarasota Sailfish cornerback Harrison Andrews @abh89 is next and he’s certainly deserving of the attention. The former Gator is the second-leading tackler among all cornerbacks this season with 65. He’s also got 4 pass deflections and would have much more if quarterbacks weren’t terrified to throw his way. He effectively shuts down half the field for Sarasota and was a key cog in their most recent victory (10 tackles, PD). Whether it’s shutting down elite wide receivers or preventing the big outside run, Andrews has every skill you want in a Pro Bowl level corner. The rough patch in Sarasota won’t last for long with defenders like Andrews in the back end.
This article is about good players and who fits that better than Gary Goodman @ShnarlyDude? The Baltimore Hawk has been more than good this season, though. He’s tied-for-second among all players in tackles for loss (8) and is one of just two players with 30+ tackles, 5+ sacks, and 6+ TFLs this year. He’s been the most disruptive Hawk and has been playing his best defense as of late. In the last two games, Baltimore is 2-0 and Goodman has 9 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 sacks, and a safety. He’s been as important as any defender on any steam recently and has the Hawks in prime position for a postseason run. More like Gary Greatman.
Goodman is playing like a demon right now, which brings us to Portland’s Demon Jaxson @LB3737. Jaxson is a defensive end for the Pythons and is off to a fantastic start in his rookie season. He’s second on the team in tackles for loss (5) and tallied a pair of them against the Ultimini contending Minnesota Grey Ducks two weeks ago. He’s got the Pythons tied for the lead in the NFC (4-2) and main reason why they currently field the second best defense in terms of points allowed. They’re also third in tackles for loss and have been giving opposing offensive linemen fits all season. Jaxson’s star will only continue to rise this year and beyond.
Pythons do not have the ability to fly, but Hawks do. That’s why we head to Baltimore to break down QB Chika Fujiwara @"Jackets28". Fujiwara currently leads all quarterbacks in touchdowns and yards, and leads a Baltimore offense that has been incredibly efficient lately. In the last two games, Fujiwara has thrown for 514 yards, 6 TD, 1 INT, and in-game QBRs of 103.2 and 136.2. Those are MVP-level numbers for the Hawks’ signal-caller and it’s no surprise that Baltimore sits 5-3 overall. Fujiwara’s best attribute is the ability to spread the ball around and keep the defense on its toes. The Hawks have four different receivers with 32+ catches, causing defensive matchups on virtually every snap. Keep an eye on Chika and the Hawks as they make a run towards a potential Ultimus title.
Next up we have a quarterback’s best friend in Richard Littlewood @LatinViking of the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers. Littlewood received one of my highest value grades in the DSFL Draft and he’s made me look like a genius so far along the Carolina coast. The Bucs are 5-1 with a two game lead in the SFC and have the Ultimini firmly in their thoughts. Littlewood is one of just eight OL in the league with 19+ pancakes and zero sacks allowed and he provides Myrtle Beach with much needed versatility along the offensive front. Myrtle Beach has two of the top nine running backs in terms of rushing TD and with hogmollies like Littlewood up front, that’s no surprise. Oxymandias and Chungus need to send Littlewood an early Christmas card for all the hard work he’s doing to spring them for big gainers. ISFL teams are salivating over this former Hawkeye.
Our next player wasn’t a Hawkeye nor was he from the Big Ten, but he does play right next to the offensive linemen. It’s tight end Heath Evans @Thor of the Arizona Outlaws! Evans has been on fire this season with the second-most catches (47) of any player in football. He’s been Jay Cue’s security blanket and top target, but his skills aren’t just limited to hauling in passes. He also has an impressive 14 pancakes on the year, providing some much appreciated road-grating for Arizona. Through eight games, he’s either lead-outright or been tied for the most receptions on the team on six different occasions and one of the league’s most dominant pass-catchers. The Aussie looks to take on an even bigger role in the weeks to come as Arizona keeps its eyes on a postseason berth.
While Evans has been on fire, our next player is literally fyre. As in Damian Blackfyre @ThunderTitan82 of the Minnesota Grey Ducks. He patrols the secondary for Minnesota and makes quarterbacks’ lives uncomfortable from the first snap. He’s one of just two players with 2+ interceptions and a sack, showing his versatility and playmaking ability. He can fill just about any need you want in the secondary, whether it’s playing closer to the line of scrimmage or dropping deep in coverage. Three weeks ago, he had 9 tackles against my Norfolk Seawolves and last week he notched four tackles and a pick. Blackfyre was drafted by the Butchers last year and has all the traits of a decade-long, elite ISFL safety.
Speaking of quarterbacks, let’s go another signal-caller in Jackie Daytona @Mooty99 from Myrtle Beach. The rookie QB currently leads the league in passing yards and has the Bucs off to a hot 5-1 start. He’s only thrown one interception in his last four games and has been as efficient as anyone in that stretch. He’s gelled perfectly with Zach Crossley and Djibutee McJimmerson and will be getting a hard look at some regular season awards if this play continues. Daytona is the definition of calm, cool, and collected in the pocket and is simply impossible to crack. He also has 68 rushing yards, showing he isn’t one of those lead-foot statue QBs. What more could a coach ask for from a quarterback?
From the shores of the Atlantic, we travel to the shores of Lake Michigan and Chicago Butchers defensive tackle Daymond Brooks @ForSucksFake. Brooks is tied for second among all DTs with four sacks and he’s also logged 20 total tackles and a pair of tackles for loss. The Butchers have allowed the third-fewest points in the league and opponents are finding it nearly impossible to run against the Brooks-leading defensive line. Just look at last week against the potent ground game of New Orleans - the Second Line managed only 85 rushing yards and Brooks broke through the line for two sacks. It’s that type of dominance that has Butchers fans eyeing a trip to the Ultimus at season’s end.
Let's stick some coastal teams as we go to my home of Norfolk and Xmus Flaxon Jaxon-Waxon @ConnorM123. XFJ-W is tied for 8th in the league in pass deflections (5) and has two interceptions so far this season. His veteran presence is much-needed in a young Seawolf secondary as he's shown off his leadership and flexibility. With his skillset, it's no wonder why the reigning Ultimus champs drafted him with their second pick. When you get Jaxon-Waxon, you don't just get an elite defender, you also get a special teams star as well. So far this season, he's returned 12 kickoffs for a total of 231 yards, which is good for a 19.2 yard per return average. On a team that is struggling a bit on offense, JaxWax's contributions are that much more important for our club in Norfolk. San Jose is getting a great player and an even better teammate.
We’ll round out this article with a former #8 overall pick - Tayshawn Crunk @Crunk of the Arizona Outlaws. Crunk made waves with his elite performance in London and has taken those talents to the desert in a big way. This season, he’s tied for the lead in interceptions (5), second in defensive touchdowns (2), and has all the makings of a Defensive Rookie of the Year. He isn’t just a ballhawking center fielder, though. Crunk is physical and fast enough to be a force against the run and to make more than his share of one-on-one tackles on the perimeter. The last three games, he’s finished with 18 total stops, only confirming his versatility and reliability. First round pick, called up after one season, Ultimini Champ...what’s next for Crunk? Maybe we should take measurements for a Hall of Fame jacket.
