We enter the back half of the DSFL season with week 8, the first set of games in a double header, set to potentially shake up my power rankings.
Game 1 : Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (6-1) @ Kansas City Coyotes (4-3), Coyotes win 20-3
The Buccaneers travelled to Kansas City looking to get their 7th win from 8 games to keep their excellent season going, but were brought back down to earth by the Coyotes, in a very one sided game that KC won by 17 points, dominating on both sides of the ball. It’s a much needed result for the Coyotes in the race for a playoff spot between the four teams in their decision, and MB will not worry too much, as they are still clear leaders in their own division.
The Buccaneers got the first score of the game with a Leo Bloomfield 45 yard field goal nearing the end of the first quarter, but it was to be their last score of the game. On offense they managed to avoid any turnovers, but punted far too many times, 8 to be exact. Their quarterback Daytona played decent with 200 yards but failed to find the end-zone, and it was a similar story for their usually solid rushing attack, combining for just 68 yards on 22 carries between them. On defense they played a bit better but could not get to the qb enough, sacking him just once.
It was a near perfect day on offense for the Coyotes, who earned themselves nearly 450 total offensive yards, and it would have been better had qb Peterson not thrown an interception. Other than that though he played solid football, throwing for 237 yards and a TD. On the ground it was more of the same, with Kitchens and Tutankhamun combining for 161 yards on 30 carries. Arthur Naught was once again his qbs favourite target, with 7 receptions for 108 yards. Their defense played just as well as their opponents, sacking the opposing qb four times, but failing to record a turnover.
OPOTG :
King Tutankhamun, Running Back, Kansas City – Tutankhamun is a deserved OPOTG, getting 104 yards from scrimmage, including 83 yards on 13 carries giving him 6.4 YPC. One of theses rushes was a 5 yard touchdown.
DPOTG :
Thomas Rose, Linebacker, Kansas City - After picking up DPOTW last week Rose gets another award from me, this time with a somewhat lesser performance , however still impressive, recording 7 tackles, a sack and 2 PDs.
Game 2 : Dallas Birddogs (1-6) @ London Royals (5-2), Royals win 17-14
The Birddogs went to London coming off the back of their first win of the season, to play a game which basically no one backed them in. However the Birddogs came dangerously close to pulling off a shock upset victory away to the Royals, begin 7 points up going into the final quarter, only to lose by 3 points.
The Birddogs will be disappointed in themselves for letting this one slip so late in the game, especially after they had a costly turnover which led to a London field goal in the fourth. Quarterback Caliban had a decent game, but the real stars of the game were the two running backs, coming for 186 yards on 36 carries, failing to find the end-zone however. The defense managed to hold the Royals to a low amount of yards but couldn’t force a turnover all game.
The Royals offense was very stale in this game, managing just 250 total yards, however they managed to go without a turnover which ended up being very important for them, especially when receiver Tugg Speedman hauled in the winning touchdown with 1:32 left on the clock, just his second reception fo the game. The defense was not brilliant either, however it was good enough to assist the team in getting the win.
OPOTG :
Cobra Kai, Running Back, Dallas – This running back picks up yet another OPOTG with his 111 yard game. Kai was unlucky not to record a score, however was instrumental in his team even nearing this win.
DPOTG :
L’Gazzy Burfict, Linebacker, London – One of the clear front runners for DPOTY so far this season, Burfict had another good performance, picking up 13 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 2 PDs.
Game 3 : Tijuana Luchadores (3-4) @ Minnesota Grey Ducks (4-3), Luchadores win 20-7
A third loss in a row for the Grey Ducks, and a second loss at home, will be a worrying sign in the Grey Ducks’ playoff attempts as their division is extremely tight. The Luchadores will be happy to pick up this win and put more ground between them and their divisional rivals in Norfolk and Dallas.
Luchadores quarterback Boss Jr. did not have a particularly good game, some would even say bad, as he complete just of his 21 passing attempts for 116 yards, however the running backs Gilbot and Mills allowed the offense to help the team to a win with a combined 175 yards and 2 TDs between them. The defense also played very well, sharing four touchdowns between them.
One of the main themes in this were poor quarterback play, only for the Grey Ducks it was much, much worse. It will definitely be a game to forgot for rookie qb Negs, who threw 4 first half interceptions and finished up with a QBR of just 18.6. If Minnesota are looking to make the postseason, he will certainly need to stop with that amount of interceptions, however it seems by his previous form this game was simply an anomaly.
OPOTG :
Mike Rotchburns, Running Back, Grey Ducks – Despite a poor loss for the team, that did not stop Rotchburns from performing great, carrying the ball 27 times for 128 yards and a TD.
DPOTG :
Vincent Jones, Linebacker, Luchadores – Jones had the best game amongst all the great defensive performances on his team, recording 7 Tackles, 1 sack as well as a big 4 PDs, plus he was one of the four to get an interception on the day.
Game 4 : Portland Pythons (4-3) @ Norfolk Seawolves (1-6), Seawolves win 21-16
The Pythons went to Norfolk to face the Seawolves in week 8, and suffered a serious blow to their playoff hopes, losing a very winnable game by 5 points. The Pythons were down 14 at Half time and a late rally was not enough as Norfolk managed to hold on and win the game.
The Pythons had a very decent performance on offense, getting 414 total offensive yards, however they failed to do the most important thing in football, which is find the endzone, enough. On defense they simply did not do enough, as they failed to record a single sack or turnover and only got 1 lonely TFL by Jaxson.
On the other hand, the Seawolves offense did not have the best performance but did manage to do enough to help them to a win, with running back Mr. Forty Two carrying the ball 30 times, for 134 yards and a TD. On defense they performed better than their opponents by far, however they also failed to record a takeaway.
OPOTG :
LeBron James III, Quarterback, Pythons – James III put up a valiant effort in his teams loss, never giving up in his attempts to get them back into the game, LBJ3 threw for 229 yards and a TD as well as rushing for a 4 yard TD on his only rushing attempt of the game.
DPOTG :
Sam Roes, Defensive End, Norfolk - Roes had a great performance during his teams win with 5 tackles, 2 being for a loss, plus a sack. There were performances comparable to this mans, but I prefer to choose my fellow humans for these awards.
Offensive Player of the Week
Portland Quarterback LeBron James III
A non-biased selection at OPOTW, as James tried his best to singlehandedly win his team the game, getting both their touchdowns, but his efforts simply proved to be in vain as they still lost.
Defensive Player of the Week
London Linebacker L’Gazzy Burfict
Burfict was crucial in his teams narrow victory over Dallas, with his 13 tackles and 2 sacks, as well as the fumble he forced, which resulted in a big momentum shift in the game.
POWER RANKINGS
1. Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
(6-2)(-) – The Buccaneers hold their place at the top despite a loss this week, as they had the upper hand over rank 2 London when they faced off in week 4.
2. London Royals
(6-2)(-) – The Royals managed to tie their and Myrtle Beachs records this week and with it came the closest the top spot has been in quite a while, and it is now time to see if London can keep their good form up and take the top spot.
3. Kansas City Coyotes
(5-3)(-) – After their emphatic win over rank 1 Myrtle Beach KC have also set their sights on potentially moving up in the rankings, however I see no reason to yet.
4. Portland Pythons
(4-4)(-) – Portland cling on to a top half position, mainly because I play for them and some of the teams below them had poorer results than they did.
5. Tijuana Luchadores
(4-4)(+1) – I said last week that Tijuana could potentially move past Minnesota if they beat them, and lo and behold, they did.
6. Minnesota Grey Ducks
(4-4)(-1) – The Grey Ducks suffered a bad loss against Tijuana causing them to drop down a rank, and it is their third loss in a row. They will need to improve this form if they want to stand a chance at making the playoffs.
7. Norfolk Seawolves
(2-6)(+1) – The Seawolves, in all fairness to them, managed to pull out a good win this week and move up a rank, however it is still tough to see them making the playoffs.
8. Dallas Birddogs
(1-7)(-1) – After a decent spell not last, the Birddogs return to 8th, as they are now the only team left in the league with just one win.
