BAH.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, there are a few people around the league who deserve to be acknowledged, or, at the very least, deserve more acknowledgement than they're currently receiving. First and foremost, I think we all joined the ISFL for the sole purpose of having fun. Some of us are so committed to the idea of this league being fun, they've decided to take up a league job to help keep the league fun. Sure, we get money for league jobs, but there are lots of ways to get money in this league. You could do what I'm doing right now, for example, and just write a big old sappy post about your pals in the league. That sounds a lot easier than updating (or, god forbid, auditing) 20 players a week, or grading ~16 pages of point task responses, or sending messages to 30 subreddit mods just to have 29 of them leave you on read. Don't even get me started on the graphic artists who make all of the draft sigs only days (or in some more extreme cases, hours!) before the draft itself is streamed. If you have a league job, especially a league job like HO where the responsibilities include eating the shit of other members on a daily basis, this paragraph is dedicated to you. Thanks for helping to keep all the gears turning in our league, and thanks for donating some of your time so we can all have a better time. Special thanks to whichever media grader is grading this post :eyes:
When I first joined, like many others who are new to sim leagues, I didn't know a single person in the league. For most people, I think your first introduction into the league is either the general cesspool chat on the main ISFL discord, or the rookie server. Even though they're going to purge me from it any day now (season 25 best season), I still think the rookie server is an excellent introduction to our league. It's a (I'm going to use the dreaded buzzword) safe space where rookies can chat with other rookies while also getting help from our league's wonderful rookie mentors and GMs from both leagues. Our GMs and rookie mentors are among the first people rookies speak to, and it's a good thing, because you're all lovely and you're doing an excellent job. Thank you for being such great ambassadors to our league <3
Special thanks to Globs and Simo in KCC (you guys run such a fun locker room, and you're both such joys to talk to all the damn time. KCC is my second DSFL home for a reason, and that reason is you two + all those kooky coyotes you guys have running around), Panda and SouthPaw in Portland (thanks for trusting me enough to give me a league job panda! And thank you south, for always giving me pictures of your dog upon request. we do be lovin our snek comrades in Dallas), Tonzy in Tijuana (there aren't many people in this league that will have an entire conversation with me using only disney/pixar gifs, but I know I can always count on you; I was so happy to see that you're taking over in Tijuana, I know you'll have those cultists in prime form in no time), Jamar in Minnesota (even when your UNO team beats my UNO team and your football team beats my football team), and Maglubiyet and abh89 in London (Mag you were the first person to scout me in the league and you instantly made me feel so welcome. You answered any dumb questions I had (and you still do that to this day!), shared your sim knowledge with me, and gave me advice on building my player. The conversation we had is a big part of why I got so invested in the league so quickly, and I hope you know how much good you bring to this league, cause it's a whole lot of good. Abh I don't know you as well, but every interaction I've had with you has been similarly positive. I know our teams are rivals, but you guys sure can make it hard at times what with how lovely you both are.) To the other DSFL GMs, I don't know you guys as well, but I'm sure you're all quite lovely as well! Don't be afraid to say hi if you ever see me shitposting in your locker room.
ISFL GMs, I didn't forget about you guys! Your jobs are difficult as all hell and I'm not sure I'd ever have the patience to do it, especially not as well as some of you guys. Hell, I give thanks to ISFL war rooms too. Scouting, although one of the most fun and rewarding jobs in the league, can also be pretty damn tiring. This time last season, I was in the thick of scouting season, and I had some really lovely conversations with ISFL GMS/war room members; I had already been in the league for a few months and thought I knew most of the league (I was quite wrong!) so it was really nice to have all of these unfamiliar faces introduce themselves to me and it was nice to converse with them. To the 13 ISFL team representatives that took time out of their hectic schedules to scout me last season, thank you! It was wonderful getting to meet you guys. To New Orleans - I guess I don't like purple football teams (go ravens) and marching band music (go sousaphone) enough to get on the team's radar. I hope we'll get the chance to talk next time around.
After all of those scouting conversations, draft night finally came, and I was selected by the Orange County Otters. I was honestly surprised - I had had one of my favorite scouting conversations with qWest, but I wasn't sure how much of an impression I had made. I was immediately very excited (dare I say, thankful?) about being drafted by Orange County for a couple of reasons: orange is my favorite color by a country mile, otters are adorable, and every conversation I had ever had with jeffie43 had either been simply wonderful. Seriously, half the time I talk to Jeff I feel like I either learn something or I laugh my ass off cause he's funny as hell. The other half is me roasting him for something because he's a good sport who puts up with my jokes. Ily jeffie <3 I figured if Jeffie is the GM of this team, it's got to be a pretty damn fun locker room, and I would say my assumption was absolutely correct. OCO's locker room welcomed me with open arms and I'm super thankful for that. I never felt like an outsider or one of "the new guys" at any point. Just an otter among otters! To the OCO locker room, thank you guys for maintaining such a fun locker room, and thanks for welcoming me into it like I had been there the whole time. Laser, thank you for making sure I'm never in the dark about anything pertaining to my player, it is very much appreciated. Moreso, thanks for everything you do for the Otters and the league at large. I've heard from multiple different people that GMing and updating are two of the more stressful jobs in the league, so the fact that you manage to do both jobs as successfully as you do is outstanding; it's almost worthy of it's own media post. Thank you, Laser and Jeff, for believing in me and ol' Dick Leaking enough to trade up to draft me. Hope I can do you guys proud in my first season, and in many seasons to come! let's go win some ultimi
(btw if nobody has coined "ultimi" as the plural of ultimus yet, boom, done.)
Jumping back in time again here - iStegosauruz was among the first people to reach out to me when I joined the league. We talked about what I thought of the league so far, the DSFL franchise he GM'd for, the ISFL franchise he played/sim tested for, what I could expect from the linebacker position, dinosaurs, what the locker room is like in Dallas, and a lot more. My conversation with Steg made me realize just how much depth there is to this league. When I joined the league, I expected to create a player and check his stats every now and then and that would be that. Come to find out, there are GMs and war rooms and people scout you and you get to pick a render for your player and there are TWO!?!? leagues with TWO DRAFTS where very talented people make a graphic of your player and also there are rules about tampering and punishment threads and holy shit guys this league has a lot of depth to it. Talking to Steg showed me that you can put as much or as little time into this league as you want to - his words encouraged me to take a closer look at the forums as well as the DSFL locker rooms I was in, and I can confidently say, if not for Steg, there's no way I would be as invested in this league as I am today.
The next day, another scout reached out to me, and to my surprise, they were from the same team as Steg! Kyamprac and I had a pretty routine scouting conversation (one which I fell asleep in the middle of, as one does), I joined the Birddogs locker room, and it very quickly became my favorite server in the league. Keeping with that theme, I quickly met some people (both fellow members of my draft class, and people in the birddog management), many of whom would soon become among my favorite people in the league. When I signed up for this here dot football league, I don't think I exactly expected to meet a group of people that I would talk to for just about every single day, for a few months straight. That's the thing about this league - yes, many of us came for the dots running around an outdated sim, but I really doubt it's why any of us stayed. For me, the Dallas Birddogs, and more specifically the wonderful interactions I had with my teammates on a daily basis, are the reason I stayed. The ISFL quickly went from a website that I checked on occasion to a series of discord servers where I was meeting people I genuinely enjoyed conversing with; I had never really used discord prior to joining the league, and now suddenly I'm entering the world of discord bots (Jeopardy bot is no Alex Trebek, but I'm thankful for it just as well) and learning about all of the league's inside jokes (do you have a moment to talk about the glorious Church of Frostsuxlmap?) and just having a damn good time with you all.
It's a bit difficult to write "thank yous" to so many different people in the league, because I don't want to misspeak, and more importantly, I don't want to forget any of the people who have helped me realize how wonderful this league can be. But I shall fight onward and prevail, for the good of the league, and perhaps more importantly, my league bank account.
To all of the users in that cursed ISFL among us/party games server, thank you. I feel like the rate at which I met cool people in this league was exponentially increased when I joined that server, and although I now just mostly look at the server as a factory where pings and misery are created (just kidding about the misery part), joining that server was one of the best ISFL related decisions I have made thus far in my player's career. That server helped me meet many of the people who have become among my favorite users in the league. It also, as much as we joked about this, serves as a great scouting tool for the DSFL/ISFL GMs and war room members who were in the server. What better way to judge how much of a role a person might play in your sim football team than to watch how they react to being killed over and over again? Seriously, war rooms should just start hosting jackbox/skriblio games to do their scouting for them, you can learn a lot about a person that way. There are way too many of you to name, so I am sorry for not naming everyone, but I do want to give a special thanks to Tylus for making the server, and Frost for everything he does to maintain the server.
While on the topic of Frost - thank you for being one of my favorite people in the league. I can’t say too many nice things about you or else the league Illuminati will delete this whole post, but I big appreciate you dude. I’m thankful for all of the back-watching and backstabbing you and Soup (whom I also love dearly) have done for me in among us, all of the UNO matches we’ve played in UCL (time for the homie Soup to step his game up on that one; think about how legendary the 1v1v1s could be), all the shit talking we’ve done to each other, and everything in between. <3
To my dear pals in the Dallas Birddogs war room with me - I love y’all. Beyond any of this dot football nonsense, thanks for being great friends. The league could magically disappear tomorrow and I'm confident I would still come out on the other end with some good friends in you. But for now, there's no one I'd rather tackle this dot football nonsense with than you guys. Thanks for everything you do to make our team a fun one. I'm thankful for all of the great times we have had over the last four months, and I'm excited af for the things that are to come for our team.
To my other pals that I have played with for the past two seasons in Dallas, I love y’all just as much! Some of you guys were drafted with me, and some of you guys, I had the honor of helping make the decision to draft you! Just about every one of those decisions have turned out excellently, and I’m so glad we were able to bring you guys on board. I have had so many great conversations with you guys, from bonding with Moonlight over our shared love of purple sports teams/gaming (Moonlight if you’re reading this, you’re awesome. Even if you aren’t reading this, you’re still awesome), to learning about different sim leagues/books/board games from OD, to getting stomped in Jeopardy by the one and only party worm SlurmsMcKenzie.
If you, for whatever reason, read this whole media post, I both admire your fortitude in putting up with my rambling and am thankful for you as well. The unfortunate reality of making a post like this is that I have most certainly forgotten someone, or more likely, multiple people who have had a grand impact on my ISFL experience thus far. If you feel that you are one of those people, you get some thankfulness too! Please feel free to call me out in the comments; I wouldn't have it any other way.
One last thank you to those who help keep this league running, which I guess is anyone with a player! What the hell, thanks to the GM bots too. Americans, I hope you have a wonderful holiday this week, and non-Americans, have a damn fine Thursday. Gobble gobble yo.
