Wow, a special milestone. It’s my 10th game review and the next milestone would be 25. And then 50 and then 100. Because that’s how milestones work. And for this milestone game I looked long and hard for a game to review. I don’t know how to exactly describe the feeling of looking for games to review, I guess the best comparison is like looking for a good porno to watch.
But the game we’ll be reviewing today is a matchup between the Hawks and the Liberty, and I don’t think I’ve done a review starring the Hawks yet, but I could be wrong, my memory is terrible. The Hawks and Liberty are quite familiar with each other, you know, being in the same conference and all for so long. This particular matchup we’ll be looking at is going to be the week 3 matchup in season 6. Philly and Liberty both had playoff aspirations this season and they were both definitely capable of doing so. No point in fluffing this intro up anymore, so let’s get straight into the thick of things.
Blocksdale wasted no time getting to business on the Hawks opening possession, throwing a great 24 yard pass on 4th and 5, and finishing the drive off with a 9 yard pass on 3rd and 10, but they don’t go for it on 4th and 1, and decide to kick a FG from the Philly 10 yard line. They go up 3-0 with 10:18 in the first quarter. Philly starts out with 3 straight incompletions, and punts immediately. Blocksdale gets a clutch 3rd and 8 conversion with a 13 yard pass to Wachter. Taylor gets stuffed 1 yard short on a 3rd and 3, and Baltimore punts. The Hawks discipline fell apart on this drive, and it started with an offsides penalty on 2nd and short, giving Philly a first down. Rove chucked it up for 45 yards on the next play, and 2 plays later he found Garden again for a 16 yard completion. They were on the 3 yard line but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty screws them over, but they get it right back with a 7 yard and 8 yard completion. Now on the 2 yard line, the Hawks emit 3 straight penalties, getting the ball placed on the half an inch line, but for some reason the Liberty staff decides it’d be cool to pass the ball instead of running, and Valentine breaks up a fade in the endzone, forcing Liberty to kick an 18 yard FG. The game is tied at 3-3 with half a minute left. The Baltimore drive starts off good, and 2 plays in they are at the Philadelphia 38 yard line. A penalty and a throwaway stalls the drive out and they punt to Philly with the first play in the 2nd quarter. Philly goes 3 and out and punts right back. Blocksdale gets another awesome 3rd down conversion, a 19 yard completion to Willie. After an OPI a few plays later it’s 3rd and 17. Blocksdale finds Taylor for 34 yards somehow, but a sack by the Philly defense later forces them to kick a FG, and the score is 6-3. Philly goes 3 and out again and punts right back with 7 and a half minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Another long 3rd down comes up for the Hawks, and Blocksdale has been throwing big passes on 3rd down all game. It’s 3rd and 10 from Baltimore’s own 43 yard line. Willie runs a streak, and he’s 1 on 1 after the Philly defense blitzes. Blocksdale chucks it up and says a prayer, and… Willie goes up and mosses the defender, managing to keep his balance and stumble in the endzone for a huge 56 yard TD. Baltimore goes up 13-3. Philly realizes they’re slacking, and another 3 and out is unacceptable. Their first play of the drive is a 10 yard sack, so it doesn’t look like it’s gonna end well, but a 19 yard pass on 2nd down + a Hawks penalty gives them a first down, but there’s another sack, and on 3rd and 10, Rove finds Garden for 15 yards. A couple plays later they get in FG range, but time is about to expire and they have to kick a FG. The drive took up 4 minutes and gave Baltimore no time to do anything. The game is 13-6 at half, Baltimore leading.
On Philly’s opening drive they get to midfield quickly, but Rove can’t work his magic on 3rd and 10 after a pressured throw, and they have to punt. Baltimore starts on their own 19 yard line but a big pass for 17 yards to Taylor sets them up well, and on the very next play, Blocksdale throws a WR screen to Willie, who breaks a tackle and runs all the way to the endzone for a 64 yard TD. Baltimore increases their lead to 20-6. Philly knows they need to get something together. So on 3rd and 10, Rove lines up, snaps the ball, scans the field, throws a slant, but the pass is picked off! Baltimore is up 14 points, and 35 yards from scoring another TD. But, Flock comes in with a sack on the first play of the drive and Baltimore can’t do anything past that and is forced to punt. Liberty can’t do anything and punts back. They are down 14 with 21 mins to go in the game. On a 3rd and 6, the Hawks receiver catches a screen but gets popped, and Philly recovers the football. They get setup in good field position and after a couple of good passes, it’s 3rd and goal from the 3 yard line. Rove throws a fade and scores the TD, making the deficit only 20-13. The Hawks very first play of the next drive is another fumble and Philly recovers it!. AFter several good plays, the drive ends with a 3 yard rushing TD. The game is tied at 20 with 11 and a half minutes to go. Despite 2 penalties, back to back passes by Blocksdale gets them 51, and they’re setup at the Philly 40. Blocksdale goes deep again for 40 yards, and scores. He threw for 91 yards on that drive. With 7 minutes left, the Liberty is down 7 and needs to score. On a 3rd and 8, Rove finds Kroetch for 13 yards and a first. 2 Hawks penalties later, and Philly is in BAL side of the field. Another Hawks penalty gifts Philly another first down. On a 3rd and 3, a 5 yard rush gets them the first down. On a 3rd and 5, Kroetch gets stuffed on an outside run, and it’s 4th and 6 with 2 minutes to go. Philly takes a timeout to call the perfect play, and Rove finds North for 9 yards and the first. 1 play later Rove throws a dig to DiMirio for the TD. The game is going into overtime.
Back to back drops open up the Hawks OT drive, and a 46 yard pass by Rove on the next Philly drive essentially seals the game, but they score a TD just for comedic effect. Philly wins 33-27.
They make an amazing comeback win thanks to back to back fumbles by Baltimore.
