As I write this, the week 7 sims are going on, so I’ll be providing my own thoughts here and there. First of all, poor Arizona. If you or a loved one suffers from being an Arizona Outlaws player please check a therapist and get help. It’s not easy being them. Also, Berlin almost choked there, like that would have been an amazing comeback. We’ve had two great games so far, I’m glad to see week 7 isn’t disappointing. Even this Honolulu game is getting spicy. But, we have a game review to write. Specifically, the 17th one in the series.
We’ll be using the SAME old RNG method I’ve used for a while now, because I can’t just keep picking games, and plus, this way we’ll get some more variety, and you’ll never know whether the game is actually good or not. Ok, so we start off with… a season 1 game? Our first of the season, how interesting. Ok, it’s going to be week 11. Ok it’ll be the first game up, which is the Hawks traveling to Yellowknife. This is like the 18th time I’ve reviewed a Wraiths/Hawks game, and honestly it will not be the last. These 2 franchises have such a rivalry with so many amazing games. Nothing more special to say, let’s get right into the thick of things.
First drive starts off with a 6 yard rush, and then an incomplete pass, so it’s already 3rd and 4 for Baltimore. But they handoff again! And it goes for 7 yards, so they manage to get the first down. 2 straight rushes after that + a penalty sets them up with a first down at their own 39 yard line. Kyubee overthrows his 2nd pass of the game, but this time it gets picked off! The Wraiths quickly start moving with a 5 yard rush and 11 yard completion. After that, Orosz can only manage to pick up 2 yards on 3 pass attempts, and the drive stalls and they have to kick a FG. Kyubee’s first complete pass is a big one, for 17 yards. But 2 rushes for -1 yards and a sack right after would end up killing the drive. YKW starts on their own 20 yard line after a Baltimore punt, and Orosz starts out hot, with 3 straight passes for 53 yards combined, a 22 yarder, a 4 yard one, and a 27 yard pass, all of which were beautiful. Now they were already in FG range, but a fumble by Larsendorf almost jeopardize all of that. Nuck manages to get 8 yards on 3rd and 10 on a beautiful draw play, so now they can actually kick a FG confidently and make it. Wraiths go up 6-0 with under 5 minutes to go in the first quarter. Baltimore remembered how to play apparently. On a 2nd and 5 from their own 17 yard line, they converted with a 7 yard pass, and then 4 straight rushes for 27 yards combined. After that, they threw a pass, but it only went 3 yards, and it was 3rd and 2 at midfield. Kyubee managed to find Christmas down the sideline for 17 yards and the first down. After that, back to back rushes get them the 1st down and 11 yards. Then back to back passes only get 5 yards, and it’s 3rd and 5. So they go back to the run game and hand it off, and Novel gets the 5 yards necessary and keeps the drive alive. Now they’re at the YKW 12 yard line, and then they decide to handoff to Robinson, who goes for 10 yards. Kyubee throws an endzone fade which goes for a touchdown. Baltimore takes the lead, 7-6, starting the 2nd quarter out right. A big 30 yard completion by Orosz on the first play of the Wraiths drive would be for naught as as on a 3rd and 3 later on, the pass is overthrown, possibly due to the windy conditions, but they end up unting at the Baltimore 47 yard line. Baltimore emulates their drive from last time, and drive 23 yards in 5 plays, very methodically. Then an unfortunate penalty makes it 2nd and 24, and they somehow manage to get 12 yards on a rush and then convert on 3rd and 12 with a 14 yard dime to West. Unfortunately, they can’t convert on 3rd and 5 after a sack and have to punt on the YKW 46 yard line. The Wraiths go 3 and out with Nuck rushing twice for 1 yard. Novel goes crazy on the next drive, with 3 rushes for 16 yards. Sprinkle in a Kyubee completion for 9 and another good rush, and thi team managed to get to the YKW 26 yard line. But unfortunately, that’s where the magic ends as they kick a FG and go up 10-6 with 2 mins left in the half. It’s not looking good for the Wraiths, who were heavy favorites. Orosz opens the drive with a 40 yard bomb, and a penalty and 11 yard pass later, they attempt a 41 yard FG with 16 seconds left, but it’s no good! And we’ll go into the half with Baltimore leading 10-6.
The Wraiths keep the same rhythm as the first half and go 3 and out with their first possession of the 2nd half. Wraiths copy that and also go 3 and out, punting right back to YKW. Orosz throws a 47 yard bomb, on the first play of the drive, and this is like the 3rd time he’s opened up the defense with a long shot play on the first play of a drive. On a 3rd and 8 on the Baltimore 35 yard line, they need to convert here in order to have a chance for a Td, or at least some get yards to attempt a FG, and they already missed a 41 yarder. But instead, Orosz throws a screen to Maddox who breaks a tackle and goes for 14 yards and the first. On the next play, Orosz finds Garden in the endzone for a 21 yard TD. The WRaiths go up 13-10 with 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Hawks manage to get a first down before a penalty and some stuffed runs screw up their drive and they have to punt back. Wraiths go on a long drive with 4 first downs with Orosz getting 31 yards on 6 completions, so a very slow, methodical drive, which ends in a 40 yard FG. Hawks go 3 and out to end the 3rd quarter, and it seems like they don’t want to win. That explosive first half offense has all but disappeared, and credit the Wraiths defense for making those key halftime adjustments. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Orosz manages to find Maddox for a 3 yard completion on 3rd and 3. Unfortunately, a penalty and sack would make it 4th and 20 and they would have to punt. Baltimore gets the ball on the Wraiths side of the field, but squanders that, getting 1 yard on 4 straight plays, and finally they don’t go 3 and out, they go 4 and out instead. Wraiths decide to chew some clock, and even going for a 4th and 1 on Baltimore’s 35 yard line, and managing to convert on a drive that ended with a 23 yard chip shot FG. The drive featured 3 first downs and some big rushing plays. There’s only 7 and a half minutes left in the game as the Wraiths go up 19-10. Wraiths manage to get to the YKW 44 yard line after a couple of good plays, but after getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage, they would punt it?? Down 9 points, at the opponents 44 yard line, with 4 minutes to go? That doesn’t make sense, but it ultimately ends the game. The Wraiths manage to get 2 first downs and a 3rd down conversion and they chew the clock out to win it 19-10.
Hawks choke… What else is there to say! Coaching staff did an oopsie too.
