I feel like it’s the appropriate time for me to write this article. With Laser and Bex retiring, both S18 classmates I’ve had a good relationship with, it’s time for me to join them and usher out my first player. And what a player it has been. Hanyadi wildly exceeded any possible expectations I could have had for him. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say he’s the greatest player to come out of the Season 18 class, period. Others had their moments, for sure. Cue had an incredible rookie campaign, Abernathy had a very strong Season 23, Purchase had one of the most absurd seasons as a kick returner in the history of the ISFL, there have been some strong performances from the class as a whole.
But, Hanyadi rose above all that to become one of the greatest running backs in the history of the ISFL. Which is still so absurd when I write it out. I was absolutely floored when I learned I had made the 25th Anniversary All-Time Team. Even if it wasn’t the 1st team, I was still surrounded by Hall of Fame talent. And the fact that the Hall of Fame committee at minimum considers me to be the 8th best running back in the history of the league is a legitimate honor. 25 seasons, several IRL years of competition, and I helped form that elite group.
Currently, he sits at 11,356 yards from scrimmage in his career, 83 touchdowns as well as 5,331 return yards in total plus 1 KR and PR touchdown. He’ll technically get one more season after this one to build up his stats, as I will be retiring in the offseason so Baltimore can use him, so there is potential he ends up somewhere around 12,500. Along with that, he’ll retire with an MVP Award, 2 OPoTY Awards, 3 RBoTY Awards, 4 Pro Bowls and a ring. He also holds the honor of being one of two players from the S18 class to be on the Anniversary team, the other being Givussafare Rubbe.
Is he a Hall of Famer? The mind says no while my heart says yes, I’m pretty split on it personally. He didn’t manage a ton of sustained success, especially after leaving Yellowknife. His time in Arizona and Baltimore have been relatively disappointing compared to his time up north. He doesn’t hold up when compared to the really big names like Brown and was statistically worse than Gump and Torenson, guys who played in the same era. And it’s safe to say, some of the guys who will play their entire careers in the 16 game schedule will surpass him statistically as well. While I’m sure the Hall of Fame Committee will keep everything in mind when it comes to adjusting for various eras of the game, will his dominance for effectively 4 seasons be enough? I’ll have to wait quite a while to find out.
I have too many people to thank for my journey, but I’ll try. Thank you to Shady, Bigred, Fly and Money for putting up with me while I was a Wraith. You guys made me feel at home in that locker room and I will never forget what you did for both me as a user and as a player. It was an incredible experience, and maybe I can come back in the future. While I was a GM with Minnesota, thank you Dewalt and Voiceless. God knows how you managed to put up with me for several seasons, but you survived somehow. For everyone I’ve worked with in those respective war rooms, I hope I left a good impact there and helped both teams. To everyone who has given me words of encouragement over my time in the league, thank you. Beyond the drama, beyond the cliques, beyond all the bullshit going on in the background, I consider this place like a second family. A hilariously dysfunctional family, but family nonetheless. I hope to spend many more years here, but here’s to the end of an extremely successful start.
