Hello!
Welcome to my analysis of the people's choice for each pick in the first rough of this season's ISFL entry draft. Quick note about methodology: I looked at the submissions (as of this writing) for the Mock Draft point task and took the most common answer for each pick to take a look at both DSFL stats as well as a rundown of the user behind the player.
Before I begin I want to highlight a couple fun notes about the players projected to go in the first round. 6 of them are sitting at or above 250 TPE ( the DSFL cap) with only 1 player under 210 TPE expected to go in the first round. That 1 player under 210 is all the way down at 157 TPE. All 8 teams are represented in the mocks with Portland and London leading the way at 3 projected first-rounders and a four way tie between Tijuana, Kansas City, Dallas, and Minnesota each with only 1 player to be taken in the first round. Of the 14 picks 8 of them are on defense and of those 8 a whopping 5 of them all play the linebacker position. Process of elimination leaves 6 offensive first-rounders and half of them are tight ends. No offensive linemen or quarterbacks are expected to be drafted in the first round this season.
Enough of the oddities let's dive into the community picks!
1. Lip Gallagher CB - POR
Gallagher is the top of his class for TPE with 270 so far. This past season in Portland Gallagher managed to amass 84 tackles, 1 interception, and another 21 passes defensed to go with a defensive touchdown (presumably off of his lone interception). All respectable numbers for a veteran, which makes the fact that a rookie was able to produce so well that much more impressive. The only knock on Gallagher's play really is that he wasn't able to generate more turnovers with only 1 to his name. I expect that will come sooner rather than later if fever95 can continue to earn at such an impressive rate. Speaking of fever95, he is new to the league and has already accumulated a bank balance of $13.3m. This is primarily done through steady graphical submission which is something I'm sure teams love to see and I expect Gallagher going 1OA to pay off in spades for the Baltimore Hawks.
2. Chevy Bronko TE - BBB
Next up we switch to offense and see our first Tight End off the board. This past season Bronko caught 72 passes for 933 yards and 5 touchdowns. Bronko is clearly able to handle heavy usage and beat his coverage consistently, any TE getting close to 1,000 yards is an impressive feat. However, even more impressive is the fact that 41 of Bronko's 72 catches went for first downs! When a player can be such a consistent safety net for both his quarterback and the team you take notice. Off the field though, there are concerns for Bronko's future with musha6570 sitting at -$1.4m which makes them the poorest of our first round picks. Hopefully musha can find a way to earn some cash and keep up their insane earn rate already sitting at 267 TPE.
3. Sam Squanch LB - LON
Squanch is the first of our 5 linebackers expected to go in the first round. In London Squanch did it all with 97 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 sacks, and 3 passes defensed. Wherever the ball was you can bet that Squanch was already there waiting to lay down the hammer. Once again Squanch is a player that you really have to nitpick to find a fault, but those 0 interceptions do stick out. That said, forcing and recovering fumbles is an important skill and at the linebacker position interceptions are more of a nice-to-have stat. ericNCSU is the first user so far that hasn't managed to quite get to the 250 TPE cap sitting at 240 TPE, but they've got $1.6m in the bank and have cranked out some articles so I have no concerns about their ability to continue earning at a high rate into the future.
4. Dante King RB - NOR
King is the first of 2 straight pick from Norfolk who also play the same position! In Norfolk King ran the ball for 153 times and got 798 yards, good for 5.2 ypc, and 3 scores on the ground. In the passing game King was also able to find steady contribution with 17 receptions for 108 yards. King has shown the ability to be a 3-down back and while he won't put up crazy number in the passing game going over 5 ypc solidifies him as a legitimate workhouse on the ground. shadyshoelace is our first recreate to go off the board and also holds the honor of being our richest draftee. At $118.5m equipment and training are of no concern to shady and a team would have to think that they'll be able to keep him around on the cheap to bring in other options down the line. Already capped with 260 TPE shady looks to be a rock solid selection who will max earn long into the future for the Philadelphia Liberty.
5. Jay Cue Jr. RB - NOR
Another recreate RB out of Norfolk with a massive bank and steady stream of income? You bet! opera_phantom is the only user I was able to verify as having a job (read: only one that it was super obvious looking at their post history) and Cue is more of a ground and pound style back with only 11 receptions for 77 yards. Cue's ball security and nose for the end zone stand out as differentiators from King with half as many fumbles (3) and 2 more touchdowns than his teammate. Is the success of these 2 players a product of being able to play together and stay fresh or are both of them destined for stardom in the ISFL? Only time will tell here, but with 258 TPE and $87m in the bank I think Cue will be able to shine at the next level for many seasons.
6. Marcus Johnson Fake - Faketown
Clearly we have a lot of copy cats in this league because Marcus Johnson isn't in this draft class. There is however a Marcus Jones so I will write about him.
6, but fixed. Marcus Jones LB - TIJ
Jones is my best guess at who everyone meant with their Marcus Johnson submission and he absolutely deserves a first round selection. In Tijuana Jones was able to avoid all of the distractions and put up 100 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 9 passes defensed, 1 sack, and 2 interceptions. Jones clearly is comfortable in coverage with multiple interceptions as a rookie, but most impressive to me are tackles. Jones is a sideline to sideline player able to get to the ball carrier through all kinds of traffic and sitting at the cap with 260 TPE drizzy is building a ballhawk. Sure you'd maybe want a linebacker that can lay the hammer and force some more fumbles, but making plays in coverage while also wrapping up RBs behind the line of scrimmage is a rare trait. drizzy should be able to keep up the max earning pace with $43.1m in the bank and a steady income of media articles. Jones is a steal at 6OA and Orange County shouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger if he falls to them.
7. Teddy Murphy LB - POR
Here we have the black sheep of the draft class. Murphy showed up late to the party and joined Portland through waivers which required him to sit out the first 2 games of the season. In his shortened season Murphy accumulated 70 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, 3 sacks, 1 interception, and 3 passes defensed. Murphy did it all this season for Portland in somewhat limited play time, but his status as an every down defender isn't what makes Murphy stand out. Trashae is sitting $1m in the red and has only been able to earn 157 TPE for Murphy. Good for 57 TPE below anyone else expected to go in the first round. Certainly linebackers have been flying off the board so far, but one would think that there are still better options and that Murphy can be had later considering the questions around Trashae.
8. Tre'Mendus Johnson LB - BBB
Speaking of better LB prospects to be had, Honolulu must be thrilled to see Murphy taken over Johnson. allbestonjames has been able to earn 247 TPE so far (90 more than Murphy!!) and has several media pieces that are waiting to be paid out so their -$300k is not a major cause for concern. More impressive though than the user is that Johnson stepped onto the field as an all star leading the league with 133 tackles last season. A lack of turnovers raises the eyebrow, but with that many tackles you have to assume that Johnson will be just fine as he continues to grow and hone his craft.
9. Suggs Upshar CB - POR
Corner can be a tough position to adjust to stepping up in competition, but not so for Upshar out of Portland. Portland's rookie duo at corner were lights out all season and Upshar laid the boom against opposing receivers forcing 4 fumbles to go with 66 tackles and 12 passes defensed. Sitting at 214 TPE Upshar has room to grow in the DSFL so it will be interesting to see if he gets the call right away from San Jose, but suggs has been a consistent earner and is actually the richest of the new creates in this class sitting just under $2m above fever with a bank of $15m. Upshar is a safe pick at 9 and with another season of development should be able to take his hard-hitting style to San Jose and find immediate success.
10. Lucid Dreams DE - LON
Our first lineman of the draft! Lucid Dreams can do what many say is the most important thing for any defensive end. Beat blockers and get to the quarterback. Dreams did that consistently for London this pass season on his way to 7 sacks which was only 1 behind In Active (LB - TIJ) for the rookie lead. As a new user luciddreams702 has been able to put together 225 TPE and a steady stream of income in the form of podcasts. Already at $5.6m in the bank and with several podcasts waiting to be paid out it should be no surprise that Dreams is looked at as the top prospect along the defensive line in this draft class. In fact, if the community is right Dreams will be the only lineman on either side of the ball taken in the first round!
11. Quinton Crash WR - KCC
Speaking of players that stand out above the rest at their position Crash is the only WR you can expect to see going in the first round. Already capped with 253 TPE Crash put up over 1000 yards on 67 receptions and is a home run threat any time he touches the ball. His playmaking ability is evidenced by his 5 catches of over 40 yards with a long of 84 and 6 touchdowns. If a player can score ~10% of the time they touch the ball teams need to respect that and Crash will be a nightmare at the next level as long as he continues to develop. Speaking of that development, there are no issues there. hihihi_62 is an old hand in the ISFL and currently has a balance of $38.7m and while it is not abundantly clear to me where this money is coming from one has to assume they will be able to stay in the black and max earn for many seasons to come in Berlin.
12. Buffalo Hunter TE - LON
Remember when I said that 3 TE's are expected to go in the first round? Well after Chevy Bronko 2OA we had a long wait to 12OA for our next TE off the board. Why it took so long for an almost capped (234 TEP) player with over $100m in the bank to be drafted is beyond me, but that is exactly that Arizona will be getting out of Hunter. In London Hunter was a steady receiving threat and a reliable target in the red zone with over 500 yards and 6 TD this past season. If this weren't a sim league I could see the pedestrian yardage send Hunter down draft boards, but the user is more important in sim leagues so I am truly at a loss when I see that Boom has been around the block in the ISFL and clearly has the capability to max earn for Hunter's entire career. This is another no-brainer to me at this spot and Arizona shouldn't take any time at all making the call here.
13. Joey Marston TE - DAL
More Tight Ends! With 2 picks left you knew another one was coming and Marston is worthy of his first round grade. Dallas put the young Tight End to use this past season and he delivered in spades with 71 receptions for 873 yards, 7 TDs and 31 kick returns for 490 yards on special teams. capt_blitzkrieg is an old hat in the ISFL and actually someone I've bumped into over in the SHL and as such I think getting someone that I fully believe will max earn for Marston's entire career is great for Baltimore as their 4th pick in the first round.
14. David Frank LB - MINN
Minnesota sneaking in with the last projected pick to get their participation trophy in this season's draft. Frank is another defender that put up a little bit of everything on the stat sheet with 83 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 4 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 4 passes defensed. icebear32 looks to be building a solid 3 down linebacker and honestly probably only fell this far because of some of the other studs at the position (Murphy excluded of course). Sitting at 233 TPE with $9.7m in the bank coming from all sorts of different media submissions the Yellowknife Wraiths should expect consistent earning from Frank and solid value for the 14th pick in a class that only has 49 draftable players.
Wrapping things up I just want to go in a bit more on the ridiculousness that is Murphy going 7OA. Not only is Murphy 57 TPE behind the next closes 1st round draftee, but he is also 33/49 for TPE ranking in his draft class. If we were just drafting by TPE alone he should be going in the 3rd round. Plus on top of that he's broke! While I was researching for the article Trashae received payout for an old media piece and vaulted him above musha6570 as the poorest in the class, but initially he had that dubious designation locked down. Finally, thank you for reading this article and I hope it has given you some insight into why mob think can be absurd and you should hesitate to just follow the consensus picks.
