Assessing Needs of the NSFC
As we near the end of the regular season, I think it’s about that time that I start looking ahead a little. The ISFL Draft will be upon is in no time at all, and teams are eagerly scouting talent to pick. With that in mind, I’m going to be playing the uno reverse card and scouting the teams back. However, while they should be reaching out and talking to the draftees, I will be operating entirely from my own observations. Some of this may be completely wrong, but it is worth trying at least.
For now, we’ll kick things off easy.

BALTIMORE HAWKS
Current Record: 3-11-0
Oldest Players: (S22) QB – Luke Skywalker, (S22) CB – Ben Stackinpaper, (S23) DT – Yuta Kira Cloudera
Recent 1st Round Picks: (S27) CB – Lawrence Miller (2), (S27) DE – Maui Waialiki (11), (S28) WR - Luke Quick (1), (S28) RB – Busch Goose (2), (S28) WR – Chunt The Badger (14), (S29) RB – Dante King (1), (S29) CB – Lip Gallagher (3), (S29) DT – Will Smyth (10), (S29) LB – Tre'Mendius Johnson (13)
Upcoming Picks: S30 BAL 1st, S30 BAL 2nd, S31 BAL 1st, S31 BAL 2nd
Upcoming Free Agents: (S22) QB – Luke Skywalkers, (S28) RB – Busch Goose
After going on a five-game losing streak recently, the Baltimore Hawks are the second to last team in the league and it appears to be a place they’re familiar with. In the last three seasons, they’ve selected in the top three of the draft five times. Which is impressive, as they definitely aligned their downturn with getting high picks and making them count.
When looking at this team from the outside, it becomes a little difficult to discern their needs exactly. They only have two players currently regressing – if I understand the regression system correctly – in Luke Skywalker at quarterback and Ben Stackinpaper at cornerback. We all know that a team is only as good as their quarterback play, and in this case I would assume it hasn’t been great here. Skywalker is last in just about every category in S29 for passing.
I can guarantee that isn’t due to a lack of options and weapons, however. With their recent first round picks, Baltimore has been busy getting high impact players to put on the field. Luke Quick and Dante King are back-to-back top picks, and Busch Goose at second overall as well as Chunt The Badger at fourteen look to round out a pretty strong looking group of young players. Having two wide receivers and two running backs out of the first round in the last two drafts, I have to think they’ve been gearing up essentially.
Thankfully, with Skywalker looking to be on the way out, the team has primed itself to replace him with Gimmy Jaroppolo Jr from the S29 draft class. It will likely take a little time still for Jaroppolo to be ready to step into a starting role in the ISFL, however, it should be expected to see him thrive once there with the weapons available to him right out of the gate.
Meanwhile, the team hasn’t exactly slacked on the defensive side of the ball either. Adding two defensive linemen, a linebacker and two cornerbacks in the first round of the last three drafts. Lawrence Miller and Lip Gallagher were each top three picks as well, just continuing their incredible depth of high-end talent all over the field. This team has had a wealth of picks and has been using them to create a potentially very dangerous crew once it all comes together.
The thing is, it is probably still going to be a little while before it all comes together. Considering how hard regression hits in this league, I would be terrified to try and create a window here. This is a team that seems set up for their S27, S28 and S29 players to carry the load at some point in the near future. However, with regression being after your sixth season, those S29 players will only be about halfway to their prime as the S27s begin to decline.
That is probably a wise window to have, just daunting to somebody from a different league who sees windows that last for a little longer than a few seasons. To my eye, it looks like they should be making sure quickly that Jaroppolo is the one to lead them and getting to work on implementing him into the offense.
What I can say for sure is that this seems like they’ve made a wise choice, opting to focus on that window and now will just be picking up extra pieces here and there with their remaining picks in the coming drafts. They likely just go for whatever the best talent they can find is, as they don’t appear to have a lot of holes to plug in the line-up moving forward. The prep work has already been done to fill these spots, as Jaroppolo is ready to step in at quarterback, Lip Gallagher can take Stackinpaper’s spot and Will Smyth appears lined up for Cloudera’s place in the line-up.
I would expect them to target defense in the draft coming up, as after those, they have Safety Jeremiah Zelos as a S24 and Defensive End Etrigan T. Slayer in S25. While both are good players, they seem to be just outside the window they would want to build for and I could see them targeting players to fill those roles moving forward.
To conclude this, Baltimore seems well set up to be a powerhouse team in S33 to S36. How far they can stretch beyond that, or how early they can get there is going to be up to the progression of their recent top picks. However, they set themselves up well and it wouldn’t be shocking to see them making their way back up the standings very soon and starting to contend for a playoff spot in the next couple of seasons.

This could not be any more different from the previous team, it feels like. Berlin is one of the best teams in the league this season, and currently is tied for the top record in the NSFC with Colorado. I assume that would be expected considering they appear to be in the prime spot of their window, with a lot of players from S22, S23 and S24 on this team. They probably don’t have long, but they are going to be one of the best teams in this window.
That in mind, I wouldn’t expect this to be a team that has much depth in the prospect pool. Usually, at least in my mind, you have to balance cap with prospects and the team may not have the cap to afford much in the way of prospects and could find themselves in a difficult position with so few younger players on the team as is. That is, until I got to look into their prospects.
At this point, I’ve counted out fourteen players that are S22 or S23 on this team. However, in their prospect pool, they have seven already who are at least 350 TPE or higher. That is a fairly deep prospect pool it feels like, and all of them are S28 or S29. This is really wise, as the oldest player on the team being at quarterback likely means they need a replacement lined up quickly and they do with Dexter Zaylren.
You expect a different name? Same here. It appears after spending the ninth pick on Troy Abed in S28, he has moved over to the wide receiver position and should be in line, I would assume, to replace Achtfunf as they make their way into retirement at the end of the season. That is great planning for them, getting a player like Abed in a prime position and being able to utilize their skills to bolster the offense in a different way. You can only play one quarterback, and as Abed was seemingly third on the depth chart, it is a great opportunity to get a top player in another position pretty quickly.
Beyond Zaylren and Abed, however, the team has safety Jacob Raske, cornerback Henny Tingzpahcbol, defensive tackle ILove HotSalads and tight end Gronku Muerto all fairly prepared to step into larger roles soon. What I see when looking at this team is just that they’ve done a good job at identifying where they’ll need help and starting to align for it. However, I don’t know that it’s possible for them to be fully prepared to cover everything, and so this is an extremely important time for the team to take that next step and win the Ultimus.
Trying to align their prospects to their outgoing players, it seems they’ll be losing three offensive linemen sooner than later, however to my knowledge that isn’t a very prime position in the ISFL and shouldn’t be expected to contribute much. They have one defensive tackle, but need another, as well as a defensive end, linebacker, running back and wide receiver.
Ultimately, this is a team that I expect to see go into the draft planning to take whatever is the best available that vaguely fits the mold they need. They have holes all over for the long-term outlook, as is to be expected for a competitor now. With just their own picks in the top two rounds of the next two drafts, I don’t expect to see them finding a way to fill those gaps just with the draft alone.
This team seems incredibly well operated, as a recent expansion team that seems primed to compete for the Ultimus in this season and possibly for a few more beyond this. It’s a team that has committed to its window, and I have to commend that. It is impressive to be able to build a team with so many players in one small timeframe. We will see where that takes them, but in my views from the outside, it should be pretty far.

Once again, we get thrust to the other side of the spectrum as we hit a team that doesn’t quite fit the mold of the others. Baltimore is pretty much done rebuilding and just waiting for their players to develop, Berlin is at their peak and just need to be wary of the inevitable downswing. Chicago is kind of in the middle of those. They had their peak recently, having a 12-4 season in S27. The cliff is steep, however, and time has not been kind.
I want to just take a moment here to acknowledge that I find it astounding that there is a S18 player on this team. Yes, I know it is his final season and as an offensive lineman I’m sure there isn’t a lot of TPE involved, but it just is surprising to see at this stage of my knowledge. The team seems like it was built for a long time ago – I mean, two seasons isn’t very long but in this world where you regress after six, two is a long time – and needs to start focusing on the future quickly.
That is where they stand now, as they go into the S30 draft with three first round picks. Even more interesting about it is, between their own and Philadelphia, they should have two top-five picks. It seems like they’re lined up to start building from this point, after not making a first round selection last season. The question being where they should be targeting.
As I look at this team’s prospect pool, it is limited to a degree. They have Dexter Hall, Tim Soulja and Rejoignez LordreSombre as over 400 TPE prospects. That’s a linebacker, safety and running back respectively. After Madison Hayes has already graduated to the ISFL level, it really seems they’ve filled the majority of their need at running back. However, they could use just about anything else. Their quarterback is old, they have nobody lined up to take over for the defensive line and it may not be long before they need another tight end as well.
This team needs work, and needs to really lay the foundation now on what they’re going to be in the next few seasons. They have a few pieces, the aforementioned Hayes, a young wide receiver in Mike Hunt and a good young cornerback in HeHateMe PickSix II. However, this is where they’re going to set the tone for what happens in this rebuild. After previously going eight seasons between winning seasons, this is the change for them to set up for a quicker turnaround from their peak.
Personally looking at them, I’m expecting to see them target the defensive side of the football early in the draft and preferably getting a defensive lineman or two. However, talent is what gets you where you need to go, and I could see them easily going best player available and it wouldn’t be a bad option. There is no bad choice when you’re picking that early and just need somebody to help guide your team forward.

I was shocked by a S18 player just moments ago, and here we are with someone even older. Sure, it’s just a season, but that’s remarkable still!
Looking at this team is fascinating to me, as they’re one that feels very well-spaced out in a way. I don’t know a better way to say that. While their list of older players is looking fairly long at a glance, it actually Isn't that bad. They seem to have consistency in keeping players active at all levels, and have a few players from just about every draft class that are earning well and should be big contributors for them.
That, to me, is absolutely incredible. This kind of league seems to lend itself to ebbs and flows a lot more. You kind of stack up for a run and then have your downswing that you kind of work your way back into. It follows the path that I’ve seen thus far with Baltimore and Chicago, teams that load up on picks to set a new window and focus in on that high point, as well as Berlin with their high-end players that are all grouped into specific classes and peaking at the same time now.
This team, instead, is built in a way to last I guess. They’re like the Steelers under Mike Tomlin, and that comparison is actually pretty perfect as I look back and realize that Colorado hasn’t had a losing record since S18 – a season after Bubba Thumper was drafted into the league!
That kind of longevity is astounding, so bravo to Colorado on managing that kind of impact on the league. I don’t know how the league’s free agency or anything works to really be able to comment on how they do it, but at a glance, the team seems to just be running on all cylinders as they have consistency at just about every level. They seem to have great scouting, as they do well in the draft, probably are good salespeople as they seem to draw in free agents and I would bet are pretty good at coaching too.
So with that in mind, I would say it’s difficult to identify what the team needs to do now. This is the team that I’m learning from the most, I would say. While the other three before were teams that followed a traditional path that I would have expected, it seems Colorado has set out on a very different journey and it’s working amazingly. From the SHL world, they’re the Buffalo Stampede of the ISFL – they're just good, always.
To kind of line this out, Sam Squanch is in position to take the spot of Adelie de Pengu probably, and Emperor de Pengu will be filling the role of Dorfus Jimbo Jr. The team could probably use another defensive tackle as Henrik Von Pigeon appears to have flamed out a bit, while Thumper is retiring and Rikiya is on the wrong side of the age battle. They still have some time left, but that is a potential target. They could also look for a tight end, though they have so many weapons between their running backs and wide receivers that it probably isn’t the priority. The team doesn’t seem to have a spot for cornerback Amy Wong at a glance, so it will be interesting to see how things proceed from there.
Ultimately, I’m going to place my bets that they look for a defensive tackle just to be prepared. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them just go best player available and see what happens. They have so much talent all over the field, what’s one more talented person going to hurt?

Just at a glance, this feels like basically Baltimore in a way. Looking over past records, they haven’t had a winning season since S23. This team has had a long and probably winding path at times, and hopefully is looking to be coming out the other side soon.
I do need to make a quick observation before I proceed with talking about them though – how funny that they drafted an X-named person in back-to-back drafts. I just find that interesting, as somebody in SHL who has had that kind of thing happen twice – I drafted two Reginalds, and then recently drafted two Roberts without thinking about it. Just a fun little quirk, to me.
Anyway, one thing really stands out to me here. The Liberty don’t own a first or second round pick in this upcoming draft. I guess that will make this a bit easier, as I don’t plan on going too deep on the draft to know what they could look for with their multiple third round picks. However, it also is alarming to me. I find it interesting to find a team that hasn’t had much success in a long period and has apparently moved their picks out. Maybe it’s just me, or maybe it’s that I’m too unfamiliar with the league to really understand the value they got out of it. I don’t even know the deal that was made that cost them those picks, just that they appear to have lost them somewhere along the way.
The team isn’t especially old in any way, in fact they look mostly stacked with S25 and younger players. Lucid Dreams looks to be a star in the making in the DSFL for the season and could be a great impact player for them. However, it does appear Xander Creed ultimately busted, and they haven’t had a lot of success in later rounds. That causes some other alarm bells, as they’re only picking in later rounds this draft and are looking like a team needing to find their way with them.
This could actually be the perfect opportunity for them, though. If you think about it, some people thrive when the situation is kind of against them. If you’ve consistently struggled with something, practice only helps, and unfortunately when it comes to drafting and developing talent, you only get so much practice and it’s always in live rounds – hehe, get it. So this could be a blessing in disguise for them.
However, it does make me a bit confused to look at, and that’s perfectly fine. I have no issue saying I don’t know much still, and this is a way for me to learn it. This team has some good young pieces from what I can tell, and is on an upswing. I have no fear to think they’re going to come out of the gates hot in the next couple of seasons, and possibly will be aiming to compete in the next three seasons. It just is interesting from my vantage point, and we will see what happens moving forward.
I would think they’re going to target some offensive talent in the draft, but realistically they probably just split it down the middle. Trying to get some playmakers in the passing game for their man Ryan Negs while also getting some good players in the secondary on defense to make up for a likely loss of Matt Cross in the near future.

What a strategy to have, especially as an expansion team. I look back to the S27 draft for first round picks, and this team has not selected in the first round in any of the last three drafts. It didn’t take a lot from there to figure out there was no way they haven’t been competitive in that time, though. Turns out, they have only had one losing season since coming into the league in S22, and it was in S22 when they went 6-7. They were one game away from never having a losing season.
That is absolutely remarkable. I have to give a lot of credit to their management staff for pulling that off. I would think It's an unsustainable strategy, but then again they’ve sustained it for seven seasons already so who knows. They may be following the same path as Colorado has, just being dominant for such a long period that it’s impossible to discern that they’ve ever not been the best.
As of this moment, it appears some things may change here. Their streak of not selecting in the first round is at risk, they currently own their first round pick. That isn’t to say it isn’t possible for them to move that pick in some way soon, but it is to say they may want to get on it quickly. Time is running out, and they might just be on the clock sooner than they think.
The team does have an interesting mix, as they have quite a few older players on the roster. However, they do have a young core that seems to be doing well of players between S24 and S26. That is impressive, as they’re not only a major competitor now, but it looks like they’re at least set up for the next few seasons to continue this streak. At the end of it, it will be remarkable to look back on.
That does leave me in a bit of a sticky situation when doing this review, as I just don’t know what they could be looking for. This seems like the kind of team that just going best player available, and is happy to move around the draft because what does it really matter to them anyway. They already have the players to compete for a while, they have the scouting to make up for the difference in pick values, and so why not?
If I had to make a prediction, I would think they look for a safety as they have two S22 safeties. They could also take a look at cornerback or linebacker, as with Peter Patterson at slot corner, they could use another on the outside. Or in the place of linebacker, they have two already who are more edge type players and could probably use an inside threat. I look for them to aim defense, but really they could go whatever way and justify it pretty easily.

The reigning champions will round out this review article, and I have to say I think this has been a roaring success from my viewpoint.
Looking at Yellowknife, I must be seeing this wrong. They haven’t had a losing season since S14?! That is absolutely wild. This must be some kind of record or something. I don’t really know at this point, but it feels like it should be. They have already solidified that they will continue that streak here, and I’m just impressed about it.
Unfortunately, I do think that streak is likely coming to an end soon. Looking at the team, Nicholas Ayers is on the way out of the league, Colby Jack is getting older, the offense is looking at having some playmakers start to regress sharply and the defense is seemingly the same. Kita Chiasa, the first-round pick in S27 for the team, failed to develop and is also now on the way out of the league as well. The team seems to be very limited on young players to take the mantle, and so as time continues to tick and the slow decline of age continues to strike, I think the streak will be ending.
That isn’t necessarily the worst thing. I’m sure there have been some compromises to have this kind of streak. At some point, every team needs to stumble a little or take a bit of a fall. That’s fine. A team that has gone for this long at that level, it’s bound to happen.
What will be interesting now is what Yellowknife does as they start to experience what may be their only period of losing in a generation. How does this team ultimately adjust and grow?
First off, we need to look at their prospect pool to see what they’ve got filled already which is ... not much. After Jay Cue Jr., they really lack in terms of any players from S27 or younger. They may be able to start selling to get more pieces in and look for that future, but I think that’s a decision for them to make this off-season. At this stage, they’re in a competitive mode, but it could be time to pull the trigger before the trigger gets pulled on them.
The team has a lot of needs, and a lot of opportunity here. They have players that are still good for a little while, and so it’s about what you want to commit to. Is it worth it to be going in now and trying to hold on to that glory for the later pain? It is one of the most difficult questions to answer for a general manager, and I wouldn’t blame them for choosing either which way.
Looking toward the draft, this team should absolutely be looking for the best possible player available. They need to get talent in, high-end, superstar talent. Jay Cue Jr. is going to be great, but who else they have is a problem that needs addressed. It’s time to get talent, whatever kind of talent. Offense? Defense? Doesn’t matter. Get the best player on the board and start building up, because the journey is going to be pretty long at this point.
And that is a look into the teams of the NSFC out of the eyes of what is effectively a total newcomer. I don’t know that I got just about anything right. From what I understood after the DSFL review I did, I was definitely wrong in some places and I expect it to be the same way here. However, I gave it my best and I hope that it was at least enjoyable to read.
Give it a few days, or maybe next week, and I’ll get a similar review out on the ASFC. However, let me know what I got wrong here, please. I need to learn somehow, you know.
