JY’s Big Mock Draft
I know, I know. It has been such a long time since I’ve done any media here. I figured it was time for a triumphant return with a mock draft that is likely to cause people to question my sanity.
In all reality, I have been building to this for a while. If you pay attention to the articles I’ve done, I looked at the needs of each ISFL team and then created my own big board for the draft itself. While I am very confident my board is not going to be accurate to what others think, I plan to utilize it to create a mock draft based on the needs I found for each team. I can guarantee this will not be accurate, and part of that is my lack of knowledge of the users and their connections as well as not knowing who has agreed to position swap and potentially fill the needs of that team.
This should be a fun time to try and guesstimate what the teams will do, and so without further ado …
WITH THE FIRST PICK, THE BALTIMORE HAWKS SELECT …
LB, Sheriff Woody from Tijuana
258 TPE, $109,604,352 Bank
Woody seems to be the unanimous choice to go first overall in the draft, and it seems pretty obvious why. While I don’t expect Woody to remain at linebacker long term for them, it is entirely possible. It doesn’t fit the needs that I lined out exactly. When I reviewed Baltimore, I saw them in need of defense for sure, which Woody does fit. However, I identified a safety and a defensive end as older players that may get replaced by this selection. Woody at linebacker is the middle ground, I guess.
That is the debate that I have when making this selection. They have a need for a safety, and Miles Weperom is sitting right there as arguably the best player in the draft. However, I think when you’re getting somebody with the top pick, you’re making a choice based on a lot of information. Weperom doesn’t have the history of success with a player, and I don’t know if ISFL is the primary league for Weperom or not as I don’t know him very well. Woody is guaranteed to be focused here on making his player the best possible, and Baltimore will get somebody great out of it. He has the bank, the TPE and the history to be worth this pick.
WITH THE SECOND PICK, THE HONOLULU HAHALUA SELECT …
S, Miles Weperom from Norfolk
273 TPE, $17,698,600 Bank
This is the most perfectly aligned situation for Honolulu. When I reviewed them I already said Weperom is likely the option here. They only show to have one safety on their roster currently, and he’s their oldest player. They need to get somebody good to cover that spot, and probably could use another as well. For now, the focus should be on continuing their transition to get younger and Weperom would be a major piece to build around on defense.
It seems like a match made in heaven, Weperom is the top safety by a mile and the top TPE earner by a long shot as well. Honolulu has the offense coming together it seems, and so they just need to fill in the space on defense as quickly as possible. Weperom’s incredible earning pace is great for that, as he should be able to accelerate the rebuild a bit with how quickly he can build up points.
WITH THE THIRD PICK, THE CHICAGO BUTCHERS SELECT …
CB, Jason Garciaparra from Kansas City
256 TPE, $136,124,202 Bank
Chicago has needs all over the field, and so I just see them going for the best player available. They are at the very start of their rebuild it seems with three first round picks this draft, and their prospect pool features a linebacker, safety and running back doing well. With Osiris Firestorm-Fjord as an older player on the team that I anticipate will be on the way out sooner than later, Garciaparra is a great replacement pick there.
Garciaparra is to me the best player available at this point. He has the biggest bank in the draft and is competitive in TPE just being three behind the second-place player. He has that pedigree of having made a great player before, and should be a good locker room addition for Chicago as they start to build out their room as well. He’ll be great to line up across from PickSix II for the long term and can make their defense practically unbeatable in the future. I see no downsides to this, and I think it only makes sense from an outsider viewpoint.
WITH THE FOURTH PICK, THE CHICAGO BUTCHERS SELECT …
DT, Konstantin Selich from Kansas City
259 TPE, $41,169,624 Bank
Chicago with back-to-back picks means it is definitely going to be hard to figure out. What I noted before was that they should be looking for defensive line help as they have Von Hayes and Daymond Brooks both as some of their oldest players and in regression. In this scenario, they’re filling that need with another known quantity and going back to Kansas City to fill that need. For some teams, that’s a big win to get two players from the same place. They’ve had success together already, why not try to continue it with you right?
Selich is a great pick up at this point, tied for second in the class in TPE and with a fairly large bank -- plenty enough to last a few seasons without needing much help at least. He has that pedigree to build a great player as he did before, and I have no reason to think he wouldn’t be doing it again with Konstantin. Chicago, if I rememeber correctly, has a few SHL ties and Selich is heavily connected to the SHL. It all seems to make sense to me, which probably means I’m off the mark. However, this is a perfect match for their needs on the line and means they’ve filled out their defense pretty well with young, high earning players.
WITH THE FIFTH PICK, THE AUSTIN COPPERHEADS SELECT …
WR, Vincent Sharpei Jr from Minnesota
254 TPE, $68,053,233 Bank
Austin is extremely hard to identify in terms of what they want in this draft. When I did my review, they were a team that hadn’t selected in the first round of past two drafts and that makes it hard to identify any trends to their selections. They have a team that seems well set up to be competitive now, but they were extremely unlucky this season. So with a high pick and the ability to get a great player, they just go for the best player available.
That ends up being Sharpei. I don’t know if Austin has any connections here, but Sharpei was the top receiver on my board personally. He has the best bank of the group, and is an instant playmaker being added to the crew. The team may not have much need here, and so this is the prime position to expect a trade by somebody looking to get a playmaker as soon as possible. I’m going to estimate Sharpei here, but this is the first that I’m really uncertain about.
WITH THE SIXTH PICK, THE SAN JOSE SABRECATS SELECT …
DE, Ioe Torrent from Dallas
240 TPE, $39,609,599 Bank
When I looked at this team, I identified Otis Allen being an older player on their defensive line and Red Arrow Jr as well as Chad Simpson not exactly being the best in those same positions. They seem like a team that has their offense set up to compete right away, but their defense needs time to develop. The team likely continues to look at their defense, and with Selich going just two picks earlier, they’re likely going to jump on getting the second-best lineman in the draft in Torrent.
Torrent is an impressive prospect, a bit off from the TPE lead but not in a significant way, and somebody that is earning money at a great rate. He has consistency in his earning which is hard to find sometimes, and especially in the defensive line. I’m sure San Jose would like to wait, but they need to get a superstar in that place and Torrent is the perfect person for that job after starting his podcast recently. I feel like this is a no brainer connection, and because of that I expect to be wrong. However, I think Torrent is a great pick up at this point considering the lack of depth at the position and the amount of teams with needs on defense.
WITH THE SEVENTH PICK, THE ORANGE COUNTY OTTERS SELECT …
CB, The Laz from Portland
238 TPE, $42,025,303 Bank
When I went through the Otters before, I recognize that they’re a very well run and well-built organization. They have a good amount of prospects to fill their needs, and the only things I can see them needing are safeties, maybe defensive linemen and offensive line. They have a couple possible options here because of it, as Dominos Pizzaman is reasonable as a defensive lineman and Bernie Sanders could be an offensive line pick up for them.
I went with The Laz, however, as I believe he is somebody who will move their position and be able to fill that safety spot pretty easily. He has a good bank, a good history of building successful players. His TPE is fine for this spot in the draft, and I think that would be the only real argument to have for this pick. The Laz is a good option here for them, and he should be able to fill exactly the need they have.
WITH THE EIGHTH PICK, THE YELLOWKNIFE WRAITHS SELECT …
WR, Jason Waterfalls from Tijuana
259 TPE, $8,788,520 Bank
This goes away from my board just slightly, not exactly the best player available but the second best instead most likely. Yellowknife seems to be a team that is a bit older and needs to really work on their prospect pool and building for the next window coming up after a long period of great success. Whoever is the best player they see at the time is who they take, and their best player available may not match who I see for it either.
I mock myself here because of the recent media done. Otherwise, I think they go for Squidward Tentacles or Mason Malone here. However, the amount of media I have done recently means bank has gone up significantly. This is the second highest TPE player in the class, or well tied for it at least. There is definitely debate to have here, because there are so many great wide receivers in this class. However, I think after the media output they’ll lean toward chasing Waterfalls instead.
WITH THE NINTH PICK, THE NEW ORLEANS SECOND LINE SELECT …
WR, Squidward Tentacles from Bondi Beach
249 TPE, $34,051,415 Bank
I said I would expect to see them go after a playmaker on the offense, but I also had a hard time getting a read on them. They were a team that jumped on an early offensive lineman in a previous draft, so maybe they go after Bernie Sanders or Pepelegs Johnson at this point. However, after reading some other media, I get the sense that there is a connection here that I am just unaware of.
Tentacles is the best player available at this point to me, and fits the bill of an offensive playmaker as I had bet on before. They get a player who has a history of making a great player and has a good bank to build this one with. With Ed Barker and Brock Bodenhamer getting older, Quinton Crash is the only receiver they have to really lead the passing game with ReallyInvisible likely on the way up sooner than later. This is a great fit to me, coming into a team with ReallyInvisible on the way, Crash, Remus Roman and Adam Spencer already in place. Tentacles likely finishes off their building of the offense and makes them look extremely dangerous in the near future.
WITH THE TENTH PICK, THE COLORADO YETI SELECT …
DT, Dominos Pizzaman from Bondi Beach
218 TPE, $4,735,900 Bank
Back-to-back Bondi Beach players, which is ironic after that happened with Kansas City earlier as well. In this scenario, Colorado is a team that is pretty set at this point and the need I identified before was at defensive tackle as Bubba Thumper and Magnus Rikiya are older players that should be on the way out sooner than later most likely.
Here they go with a player that may not be the best available, but with me not having knowledge of who is willing to swap positions, Pizzaman is the best to fit the need they have. He has a lower bank, I know, but he has been doing graphics and should be able to build that up consistently with a little help. It isn’t the best pick up, but it is a good one for Colorado as it fills the biggest need they have.
WITH THE ELEVENTH PICK, THE CHICAGO BUTCHERS SELECT …
TE, Nick L. Back from Norfolk
250 TPE, $23,161,340 Bank
Chicago again, what a time to be alive huh. I have already addressed what kind of issues they have to fill, and so at this point they’re just looking for the best player available. While that comes into a debate between Mason Malone and Nick L. Back, I’m leaning toward Back in this situation. They do have a need at tight end, as Tree Gelbman is looking to be on the way out sooner than later.
My gut instinct on this is that I have no idea what to do at this point. I know at this point it is entirely possible I’ve been extremely wrong already, but this is a new level it feels like. Chicago has filled their primary needs early in the draft and really just needs to get the best they can. While they will be selecting Dee Walt in the second round, it isn’t the most unlikely thing for Back or Walt to opt to move to whatever position is the biggest need for Chicago at the time. That won’t be all that hard. However, I think Malone fits another need of theirs by giving another young receiver, and would mean Walt doesn’t have to change. It’s really a toss-up here, and I’m just following my gut that says Back would be the pick.
WITH THE TWELFTH PICK, THE SARASOTA SAILFISH SELECT …
S, Fuzzy George from Minnesota
207 TPE, $117,529,106 Bank
I read another mock that expected them to go for an offensive lineman and mentioned that Sarasota has a commitment to getting real linemen players. That did put some doubt in my mind that it could be Bernie Sanders here instead, as he is a comparable and great pick for the spot. However, my review of thier needs came back seeing them in need of a safety most of all, and linebacker or cornerback after that. With linebacker not looking so hot at this point in the draft, and a safety as the best player available from the secondary, it’s pretty much perfect for them.
George is a great locker room addition, which is ideal for Sarasota I think. He’s a long-time member who has made a successful player in the past. It makes sense for them to jump on a safety at this point in the draft, and George is among the best players left in the draft now. He has an insanely large bank, and I can see him making a great player for them. It’s pretty cut and dry to me, they both fit pretty well.
WITH THE THIRTEENTH PICK, THE BERLIN FIRE SALAMANDERS SELECT …
WR, Mason Malone from Minnesota
253 TPE, $9,760,929 Bank
My review on Berlin showed a need to just jump on the best player available. They’re a highly competitive team now, but that means holes are expected to come around later down the line. They currently have a good quarterback prospect in Zaylren and a wide receiver in Troy Abed that should work well with him. However, they could definitely use more talent all around for the future.
That brings us to Mason Malone. It is surprising to me that he’s available at this point in the draft, he's a high TPE player and has a fine bank to be able to continue to earn at a high rate as well. I don’t know his willingness to change positions after changing from a quarterback to wide receiver already. So with not knowing for sure, I’m banking on him being here for Berlin and they’re effectively getting a steal at this point in the draft. Malone is a fantastic prospect in this draft, and should be a great player in the long term. This is a great step forward for Berlin still.
WITH THE FOURTEENTH PICK, THE NEW YORK SILVERBACKS SELECT ...
WR, Calvin Hobbes from Portland
244 TPE, $12,281,830 Bank
New York won the Ultimus and is the last pick of the first round, and with that they obviously are also the team most likely to get kind of the scraps of the round. When looking at their needs, I saw it as them needing offensive playmaking and maybe wanting to prepare for some of their older defensive players to drop off. That pretty much makes them the perfect best player available spot, and they actually lucked out here.
Hobbes is way better than fourteenth in this draft, but is similar to Malone in that I don’t know if he may position switch. He has a very high bank, he has the TPE to be a higher pick. New York gets lucky here and gets a wide receiver that can take the place of Sean Snyder as he starts to regress out of the league soon. This is a fine fit, and really sets up the team well for continuing their success down the line.
At this point, we head to the second round and I want to make a disclaimer. The majority of these teams have already made picks at this point, and so I’ve gone over some of their needs. For the second round, I’m going to focus on doing shorter reviews and just make what points I can.
WITH THE FIFTEENTH PICK, THE BALTIMORE HAWKS SELECT …
OT, Bernie Sanders from Bondi Beach
208 TPE, $14,385,931 Bank
This is a good pick up for Baltimore, just continuing to build up their depth of great young players. Sanders is almost guaranteed to be a generational offensive lineman, and while Baltimore appears to not have any real person linemen, I assume they won’t pass on such a great opportunity to get a big piece of the team. It can’t hurt to get somebody to play offensive line, and Sanders is the best of them.
WITH THE SIXTEENTH PICK, THE HONOLULU HAHALUA SELECT …
WR, Andy Fantuz from Kansas City
207 TPE, $35,085,892 Bank
Fantuz is the best player available from my board at this point. He has a history of making great players and has a good bank which is what ultimately gets him here instead of Cliff Burton. Fantuz is a long time member that I’m sure is a great locker room addition and that should be a big help to Honolulu in the long term. They’re still building out that prospect pool, this is a great add for that.
WITH THE SEVENTEENTH PICK, THE ARIZONA OUTLAWS SELECT …
WR, Cliff Burton from Dallas
228 TPE, $13,706,750 Bank
This is the team that didn’t make a first round pick, and so we’re getting to them here. When I did my review, I showed them needing a couple of safeties, a wide receiver and a running back. There isn't value at safety at this point, as Richard Mansher is the best option and I think he’ll be available at a later point. Instead, I have them going the receiver route here with the best player remaining.
Burton is somebody I know from SHL and can attest that he’ll be a great player here. He has a solid bank, and I know has put in some work on media to build that up. He has enough to keep himself afloat and be a good player if not great in the future. Arizona just needs to get whatever they can here, and Burton is the best option.
WITH THE EIGHTEENTH PICK, THE CHICAGO BUTCHERS SELECT …
TE, Dee Walt from Kansas City
212 TPE, $103,755,055 Bank
My understanding is that this is a general manager for Chicago, which I just am unfamiliar with who the general managers are in most teams and what the rules around drafting them are. With the knowledge of them having to take him in the second round, I assume this pick will be on the move for a team that wants to jump up to get their guy here. However, in the meantime, I’ll take the easy lay up and mock him heading to Chicago here.
WITH THE NINETEENTH PICK, THE AUSTIN COPPERHEADS SELECT …
RB, Kiara Tenoh from London
242 TPE, $4,289,920 Bank
The first running back off the board, and Austin gets a likely steal here. I had a hard time finding a team that needs a running back, and while I think he goes earlier just to add talent somewhere, he doesn’t have the bank that would lend to changing positions. Without the bank and not knowing if he’s open to swapping, Tenoh falls to Austin but that ends up perfect for both as Austin definitely has the need and Tenoh is the best in the draft.
WITH THE TWENTIETH PICK, THE SAN JOSE SABRECATS SELECT …
DE, Rocco Blade from Portland
177 TPE, $13,350,000 Bank
I’ve highlighted with their earlier pick that San Jose needs defensive line help, and so Blade is another addition there. He has a pretty good bank and should be a good player in the long term. He is a graphics person and that can be a great addition to any locker room as it can help bring people in to get some great work done. Blade is a good pick up for San Jose here, and perfectly aligns with the needs.
WITH THE TWENTY-FIRST PICK, THE ORANGE COUNTY OTTERS SELECT …
DE, Stewart Hellraiser from Norfolk
179 TPE, $10,391,340 Bank
With the only other defensive lineman in the draft going the pick before, Orange County decides to jump on getting Stewart Hellraiser here. They do have needs on the defensive line, and after filling one of the needs they had earlier with The Laz, this is the perfect opportunity to shore up the other hole in their line-up. Hellraiser has done somewhat consistent media to build up the bank, and provided he can keep it up he should be a great long term pick for the team.
WITH THE TWENTY-SECOND PICK, THE YELLOWKNIFE WRAITHS SELECT …
QB, Dustin Parmelee from London
257 TPE, $23,813,860 Bank
Yellowknife just needs to get talent in, and they don’t have anyone lined up to take over for Colby Jack who is getting a bit older at this point. Quarterbacks take some time to develop, and he’s easily the best player remaining in the draft. I’m going to bet he goes before this, but in this scenario he falls to a way-too-late pick and ends up in a great situation with Yellowknife as someone with a great bank, high TPE and the ability to take over and lead the team into the future.
WITH THE TWENTY-THIRD PICK, THE NEW ORLEANS SECOND LINE SELECT …
RB, Tron Carter from Bondi Beach
202 TPE, $52,981,878 Bank
New Orleans is the team that once selected a first round offensive lineman, and so I could see them going for Pepelegs Johnson here, but I’m going to say they grab Tron Carter instead. The best running back left in the draft and somebody who is a good piece for their offense to help from burning out Roman Remus in the long term. He has a great bank and some pedigree of being a fantastic player in the past. This is unsurprising in some ways, but would be shocking to see him land here.
WITH THE TWENTY-FOURTH PICK, THE COLORADO YETI SELECT …
WR, Bradley Welch from London
208 TPE, $14,543,070 Bank
Colorado continues to have very little need, but getting the best player available at this point is the best option they can take. I could see them grabbing Pepelegs Johnson and building up that offensive line a bit, but I think they take a shot at bringing in a wide receiver who has a good bank and just needs to get some consistency in their updates. Colorado seems well managed and should be a good one for getting things going.
WITH THE TWENTY-FIFTH PICK, THE ARIZONA COPPERHEADS SELECT …
CB, Owen Reed from Minnesota
193 TPE, $8,863,996 Bank
After getting a wide receiver and running back, the team just needs to get a safety to fill their last need. In this case, they get a cornerback who could fill the safety spot as well. It’s all pass defense, right? Reed has a fine bank, and has the pedigree of a former good player. He may be willing to adjust his position more considering it isn’t his first time in the league, so sliding over to safety may not be out of the question here.
WITH THE TWENTY-SIXTH PICK, THE SARASOTA SAILFISH SELECT …
OT, Pepelegs Johnson from Bondi Beach
209 TPE, $22,891,240 Bank
There is the offensive line connection here. Sarasota seems to have a specific interest in offensive linemen and Johnson is a great option to pick up at this point in the draft. It is possible he goes before this, but at this point Sarasota would be thrilled to get a high TPE and high bank player with a good pedigree. If he is gone, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Madison Beer here instead.
WITH THE TWENTY-SEVENTH PICK, THE BERLIN FIRE SALAMANDERS SELECT …
QB, Ricky Stanzi Jr from Dallas
250 TPE, $17,607,830 Bank
This would be a travesty and something that I don’t think will happen. Similar to Parmelee, I don’t know if he's open to position swapping. I’m going to assume probably, but I can’t really guarantee anything and so I have to work off that knowledge. Stanzi should be way higher than this, and likely goes first round or early second instead. However, I had a hard time finding a spot for a quarterback and so at this point it’s just Berlin taking the best TPE player available and being thrilled about it.
WITH THE TWENTY-EIGHTH PICK, THE NEW ORLEANS SECOND LINE SELECT …
TE, Rex Crenshaw from Tijuana
188 TPE, $7,450,000 Bank
At this stage, New Orleans just picks the best player available to them and I believe there is a Tijuana connection in New Orleans as well. Crenshaw isn’t going to knock your socks off, but he is a good player that should be able to benefit New Orleans. They don’t have much need for a tight end with Spencer already there, but they might be able to find a way to work it out between the two.
That does it for me, as I’ve gotten through two rounds of a mock draft mostly just working off my own board and limited information that I don’t have the ability to verify really. There are a lot of moments where I had struggles because I didn’t know what to do about possible position switching or not. It does mean some positions were less valued than others, but it can come around later.
This is one that I think is going to be extremely incorrect, but it was fun to do and is a good culmination of the articles I have been working on along the way. I do want to wish the best of luck to everybody in the draft and the teams working hard to find the best fits for you. This should be a fun process, and I have faith it will end up great for everybody!
