Inside the (Rookie) Helmet - A Newbie's First Impressions of the ISFL/DSFL
Hello Readers,
After scrolling through some of the super interesting articles written about the upcoming drafts, specific team strengths, etc., I decided it might be neat to give the season veterans a few thoughts on what I've gathered about the league and its players so far. Please feel free to chime in with any additional info/things I should know as I begin to navigate this crazy new world!
My Story
I actually saw info about the league through a post on the r/WisconsinBadgers subreddit and thought it was super neat. I have played fake college football in the past, and play/umpire in Baseball by the Numbers (fake baseball number guessing game) currently, so I figured the least I could do was click around and see how things work. What I found was that this "game" is actually more of a universe unto itself...and I was almost immediately hooked.
League Structures
As I began to dig into the various systems at play, a few things stood out to me. First, I absolutely love how players are rewarded for contributing content and adding to the overall experience of the league(s). In most similar games, players are given a set number of points and can distribute as they wish, but never have I seen a system like this in play that rewards participation. The motivation to participate is always there, as your player can always improve. Players can earn money by contributing or taking up jobs. Just a fantastic way to go about things - the more active you are, the better you will be.
Secondly, I love the concept of the DSFL, allowing new players (or those creating a new player) to build up their player and work their way up to the big leagues. I'm super excited for the DSFL draft, and super excited to join my teammates and get rolling!
Thirdly, and this one is just SO cool to me, are the trading cards! Can somebody tell me who came up with that idea, because it is fantastic. I collected football cards growing up, so the simple nostalgia would be enough for me. But the fact that I will be able to collect cards of teammates and other people I meet through this game (and perhaps, some day, even my own) is amazing!
The People
I couldn't complete this write-up without talking about the people: those who really make the league what it is. I have been so very impressed by those I've talked to over Discord, whether in the Rookie Chat or after graciously being invited into some teams' servers. Everybody is incredibly helpful and welcoming, and it's awesome to be able to chat with such interesting people with such a variety of backgrounds and interests. I've been especially fascinated with the conversations I've had with scouts/GMs, and I could definitely see working my way towards those kinds of roles as I get more time and experience in the league(s). A huge thank you to everyone I've been able to meet so far; you're awesome!
I think I'll cut this article off here, although I could go on and on about the things I'm enjoying about this league so far. If any rookies (or vets) have additional input or questions, please feel free to chime in. Thanks for reading, and go get that TPE!
