The Developmental Simulation Football League recently held their season thirty player draft. As always, this was one of the highlights of the offseason. Brand new players along with recreates have spent the last few weeks to a month being scouted and in all the different locker rooms and team discord channels. Below I will talk some about my experience breaking into scouting for the Norfolk Seawolves, and do a round by round pick analysis for them.
Scouting
Since the second I joined this league, I wanted to get into scouting. I have talked a trillion times about how much I have enjoyed everything on here. The people on here make this what it is in my opinion. Everyone plays a role big or small and I love it and love how participation is awarded. One of the key factors that got me to join was when I was told there is a draft but also scouting prior to. Growing up, I always wanted to be a pro athlete, but once I got older I decided to run youth sports programs instead (kidding obv lol). Having people take extra time to scout I thought sounded cool and has turned out to be my favorite experience so far.
The best General Manager in the history of the DSFL, Negs, knew I was interested getting involved with the team on a higher level. He eventually reached out and let me into the war room and allowed me to begin scouting for the Norfolk Seawolves I believe at the end of june or start of July. He and the other people on our scout team had already scouted quite a few people but there were plenty left for me to reach out to.
Overall being the scout instead of the prospect was a really cool experience. I was being scouted pretty heavily in the International Simulation Football League at the same time that I began doing scouting for DSFL so that was a lot of fun having those both going at once. I have only been on here since May so one of my goals was to not only scout, but to also help people who had questions about the forums and stuff.
I wrote an article a month or so ago called TPE vs Personality. It was just me trying to look at what benefits teams more or what scouts/managers would rather have: a top earner or someone with a great personality if they only could have one or the other. With my brief experience as a scout I would say personality would probably weigh much more heavily. When writing up scouting notes, or if asked an opinion on a player, I always gave higher praise/grades for the people who seemed to have great personalities than I did for ones who were just a little more reserved. There is a place for everyone so this is not an indictment, rather just explaining my own thoughts from my scouting experience.
I could not be happier with how our draft went. I think the future is bright in Norfolk! Below is my opinion on how each of our draft picks will fare.
Draft Picks
So we did not have the best season in Norfolk this past year. As a result, we had the second pick in the draft. The top eight picks went as follows (sorry for any misspellings)
Pick 1: The Bondi Beach Buccaneers selected: Wide Receiver Ken Oath
Pick 2: The Norfolk Seawolves selected: Kicker Sconnie McKicks
Pick 3: The London Royals selected: Kicker Anya Mind
Pick 4: The Portland Pythons selected: Safety Siaosi Multiauaopele
Pick 5: The Kansas City Coyotes selected: Tessie Garciaparra
Pick 6: The Dallas Bird Dogs Selected: Beniri T’Chawama
Pick 7: The Tijuana Luchadores Selected: Dumais Wells
Pick 8: The Minnesota Grey Ducks Selected: Morpheus Czargyros
The first round filled the ISFL servers with the electricity and enthusiasm that we all needed to get through the offseason until the season starts.
My thoughts on our first round Pick Sconnie McKicks:
Go ahead and book this: Sconnie will be a hall of famer. I was pumped when he got picked as he was one of the prospects I was fortunate enough to scout. Sconnie has an illustrious college career where he won a Heisman trophy as a kicker. Kickers get a bad reputation for not being athletes, but that does not apply to Sconnie. He has been bulking up this off season and now will be suiting up at linebacker in the upcoming season. My projection for him this season is 200 tackles, 25 forced fumbles and a top finish in Defensive Player of the Year and Line backer of the year awards.
The second round came and went and saw Norfolk get one of the top two wide receiver prospects in the draft. This is where we selected the legend French Fries at number ten overall. French Fries is named after the crispy routes that he runs on the field. French Fries made mincemeat out of defensive game plans in college, where he routinely led his offense to weekly 50 burgers and scoring records. French fries is known for embarrassing defensive backs, as he would hotdog down the field after he burned them. I confidently say he will also be a hall of famer one day.
Next up: Round 3! Norfolk had the 18th pick in the third round. With this pick, Negs the Goat selected Spike McDaniels. Spike was a top 3 player on my personal secret big board and the top safety in the class. Spike is ferocious. Spike became a local celebrity in high school as he went viral for his hard hits on the defenseless kids who played offense on the other teams. He is going to bring a tenacity to the back end of the defense that will help take it to the next level. If Ed Reed and Sean Taylor had a baby it would be Spike. He will be a top defensive player of the year candidate and in the running for safety of the year. By my tally, this selection makes 3 consecutive (projected) Hall of Famers. Is it possible to keep this insane momentum into 4 rounds?
Introducing Malcolm Savage, future hall of fame quarterback. Malcolm will start the next few season potientially in Norfolk, and the possibility for a statue outside our stadium exist. He can do it all on the field. He changed his last name to Savage in college after being called a Savage by defensive players on the other teams. He is a mental assassin that reads defenses better than he can read books. Reading over my personal private big board, I had Malcolm as a top 4 player.
Round 5 we saw Norfolk add another illustrious playmaker to this juggernaut of a draft class. This is where Malcador “The Hero” was selected. Opposing general managers made a massive mistake. Tom Brady was a fifth round pick and has enjoyed some success during his career. The Hero will enjoy similar success on his way to being a hall of famer as well.
The middle to late rounds of the draft is what separates legends from pretenders. And to this point, Negs continued his unbelievable draft by selecting All American Linebacker Nathan Claflin in round 6. What a steal. Claflin rhymes with Trappin and that is exactly what he does to opposing ball carriers. Had he not played football, he would almost surely be in the Ultimate Fight Championships (UFC) or maybe he would be a body builder. Ball carriers beware, Claflin is the reincarnation of Dick Butkus. Butkus is ironically – a hall of famer, which means, you guessed it, Claflin will be too.
Norfolk’s last three picks saw a focus on bolstering the defense and special teams. Safety Lucas Arnold, kicker/punter Ty Knotts and Defensive Tackle Nep Neppy were selected with these last three picks. Lucas Arnold plays all over the field. He can line up anywhere. His last name is Arnold. Guess who else’s name has Arnold in it? The Terminator Arnold Scwarzeneggar. The Terminator is exactly what Lucas Arnold is going to be for our defense. Ty Knotts was another incredible pick at kicker/punter. You have to tie knots in shoes to wear them. Kickers wear shoes to kick. It is a match made in heaven. He went viral in college for punting a football through a dome ceiling. Will we see more of that in the DSFL? Last but not least, we were fortunate to select Nep Neppy, at defensive tackle. He can bench press 1000 pounds and is the only player to give me, Sal Ami, a run for my money when it comes to eating competitions or drinking games.
I count 9 new players on the Seawolves and somehow – unbelievably, 9 future hall of famers. This is the type of draft that changes the direction a team is going in. After a final review of my big board, these are the top 9 players on there. How was this robbery allowed?
As always, I would like to thank all the people who spent time to produce and contribute to the Developmental Simulation Football League Draft. It was one for the record books and I know I speak for everyone when I say I can not wait for the new season to get started! Thanks for taking the time to read this! Let me know if you have any feedback on these players I mentioned or on players that your team happened to select.
