DSFL Mid-Season Review
Portland Pythons
Previous Record: 7 – 7 / Current Record: 5-1-1
Analysis:
Missing out on the playoff at the end of last season was a huge downer for the Pythons. This year they aim to improve and make the playoffs The pythons had a strong first week claiming a solid win vs the Royals. Weeks 2 & 3 were hard forgot game, against arguably the two strongest teams in the league, the KCC & Greyducks, ending up with a draw & a loss. In week 4 the Pythons record a easy win vs the Bucc’s. Week 5 saw the Pythons play arguably the weakest team in the league the Seawolves where they recorded a rather merger 28 – 14-point victory, hopefully this wasn’t a start of a dip in form. Week 6 was another tough opponent, where the Pythons were able to produce a performance far better than the previous week overcoming the Birddogs 39 – 21. In their final fixture at the mid-season mark the Pythons hosted the Luchadores, the North conference leader, a had fought game between saw the Pythons victorious by a single score, winning 28 – 21.
The Pythons go into the second half of the season 5 – 1 – 1, having won the last 4 games on the bounce, a playoff appearance is well within reach if they can maintain this form for the remainder of the game. They sit second behind the Grey Ducks in the North Conference.
Mid-Season Grading: A-
Tijuana Luchadores
Previous Record: 9 -5 / Current Record: 4-3
Analysis:
Having lost in last years Ultimini the Luchadores are looking for redemption by winning the Ultimini in S30, they are arguably the strongest team in the South division and nothing but a trip to the Ultimini will do. The season started with a hard game vs the Birddogs eventually falling 41-38. Weeks 2, 3 & 4 saw the team return to form with solid wins over the Bucc’s, Royals & Coyotes. Week 5 was crunch match, with the best two teams in the league with the Grey Duck making a trip to the Luchadores, a possible dress rehearsal for the Ultimini this season. Unfortunately for the Luchadores they fell to the Grey Ducks 34 – 20. Week 6 saw the Luchadores visit the Seawolves, where they recorded a solid 33 – 17 win. Their last fixture of the first half season saw them play the Pythons, in a tough game with some close play, the Luchadores fell 28 – 21 to the Pythons. They would have been hoping for a win here, to prove that they are one of the best two team in the DSFL.
The Luchadores are currently 4 – 3 and are leading the South conference. A strong second half of the season is needed to secure that valuable 1st seed in the playoffs.
Mid-Season Grading: B-
Kansas City Coyotes
Previous Record: 8 – 5 / Current Record: 4-2-1
Analysis:
Having made the playoff in S29 the team are hoping to not only repeat this achievement but go one step further and challenge for the Ultimini. A week 1 loss against the KCC was not the start the team were looking for, the team then drew the second game versus the Pythons, finally taking their 1st win, and a shutout (33-0) vs the Seawolves, in week 3. The Coyotes lost a hard-fought game vs the Luchadores in week 4, finally falling 24 – 30. After 4 weeks the KCC sit 1 -2 – 1 with a playoff spot looking out of reach, with the Grey Ducks & Pythons several win ahead a series of win is needed to push for that spot, and that is exactly what the KCC got winning their next 3 games on the bounce. Week 5 saw them beat the Birddogs, a commanding Week 6 victory vs the Royals and a close win against the Bucc’s, solidify the KCC as the 3rd best team in the DSFL.
It will be hard for the KCC to claim a playoff spot this season with performances of the Pythons & Grey Duck’s, but this is sport, and anything is possible. If they keep winning who know what will happen.
Mid-Season Grading: B+
Norfolk Seawolves
Previous Record: 3 – 10 / Current Record: 1-6
Analysis:
A poor season in S29 for the Seawolves, meant there was a significant room for improvement in S30. Unfortunately for the Seawolves, the season started poorly, losing there first 4 games. Though on the bright side, they did at least score in week 4 which is more than can be said about the previous week being shut-out against the Coyotes. Week 5 & 6 saw the Seawolves put up some good plays against the Pythons & Luchadores, though another 2 losses put them at 0-6. Week 7 looked to be another loss against the best team in the DSFL the Grey Duck, but in a outcome no-one could predict the Seawolves beat the Grey Ducks 48-34.
At 1 – 6 for the Seawolves this season is all but over though a strong and unexpected win in week 7, could be a sign of the potential they show. They need to build on this performance and take stride forward each week and be ready for a better season next year.
Mid-Season Grading: D
Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Previous Record: 2 -12 / Current Record: 3-4
Analysis:
With the worst record for the Bucc’s last year, only really means that the only way is up. By week 3, the team had managed to equal the total number of wins from the entirety of S29, their only loss coming to the Luchadores in week 1. Week 4 was a sharp wake up call for the Bucc’s who fell 41 – 24 to the Pythons, they will be hoping for a better result in week 5. That is exactly what the Bucc’s got in week 5, beating the Royal 45- 24. Week 6 saw them face the grey Ducks and were easily beaten 38- 14. Another loss to the KCC see the Bucc’s stand at 3-4 halfway through S30.
The Bucc’s sit 2nd in the South division and only 1 win from 1st, so all is not lost at this point, if they can put week 6 & 7 behind them and win a few games on the bounce, they could very easily clinch a playoff spot in S30. This would be remarkable after their previous season.
Mid-Season Grading: B+
Dallas Birddogs
Previous Record: 9 – 5 / Current Record: 3-4
Analysis:
The Birddogs won the Southern conference last year but fell in the first hurdle in the playoff. This year they are aiming to go once stage further and fight for the Ultimini crown. The season started strongly with 2 wins in as many weeks. In week 3 the Birddogs fell to the Bucc’s. Week 4 saw the Birddogs play the best team in the DSFL, the Grey Ducks, they put up a valiant fight but lost 28 – 43. Week 6 was another tough fixture versus the Pythons and were beaten 39 -21. They needed a win in week 7 to keep them in touch for an outside chance of a playoff spot, they managed to bounce back from their two previous losses and secure a win 37 – 21 against the Royal.
The Birddogs sit 3rd in the South division, again 1 win from taking the top spot, so all is not lost for last year conference winners, a few wins on the bounce could easily see them run clear with this division.
Mid-Season Grading: C+
Minnesota Grey Ducks
Previous Record: 10 – 4 / Current Record: 6-1
Analysis:
Last year defending champions have a lot to prove to try and win back-to-back Ultimini. The season started off strongly with 3 win in 3 weeks, being pushed in both week 1 & 3 vs the KCC and Pythons respectively. Week 4 saw the Grey Duck take their 4th win in as many games. The same story was seen in week 5 & 6, with the Grey Duck beating the Luchadores, in a repeat of the S29 Ultimini, and the Buccs. This brought them to 6-0 for the season and are looking odd-on favorite to take a second Ultimini in as many years, could anyone beat them. Well, roll the Norfolk Seawolves, and that is exactly what happened, losing 48-34.
Is this a sign that the Grey Duck are starting to fade after their strong start to the season, only time will tell? Though, at 6-1 it would take a strong mind to back anyone else for the Ultimini.
Mid-Season Grading: S
London Royals
Previous Record: 7 – 7 / Current Record:1-6
Analysis:
The Royals had a disappointing season in S29 ending up last in their division, they have high hopes to bounce back and fight for the Ultimini. Unfortunately, it seems that their poor performance last year was signs of the future, the team lost the first three games of the season. Week 4 saw the team return to winning ways with a 40 – 19 wins over the Seawolves. Weeks 5, 6 & 7 were more losses for the Royals.
At the halfway point the Royal have looked all out of shape compared to other teams. No team has scored fewer points than the Royals, and only the Seawolves has conceded more, alit only 6 more. Some serious restricting is needed at the mid-season to salvage anything from this season.
Mid-Season Grading: D
Playoff Predictions

He’s manged to pick a QB once and was able to bring the ball home for his first points in his career. A second half of the season in the same vein as this and that awards is all but his.
