We are more than halfway through the season and we have had so many storylines form already. The Sabercats went from looking like one of best teams this season to one of the worst. The Hawks have finally unleashed that potential everybody saw in the preseason last year. The Yeti and Otters have found themselves struggling to be the teams everybody thought they were. The expansion teams are performing like expansion teams. And the Outlaws are showing that they were not just some flash in the pan type team. This is the time where every single game matters. Losers are looking for something to build on for next season. The middle of the pack is looking to clinch that final playoff spot. And the winners are looking to gain home-field advantage in the playoffs (because as we know home-field is extremely important when it comes to this league). With week 12 around the corner now is a good time to predict how every team will fare for the rest of the season.
The AFSC First:
• Arizona Outlaws, 8-2: W @ Sabercats, L @ Wraiths, W @ Liberty, W vs. Legion.
The Arizona Outlaws are the reigning, defending, undisputed, winners of the Ultimus Trophy. This season is showing why they won. They came off their bye week with two strong wins. Now they are currently sitting at 8-2 and pretty much an easy schedule left to play. The Arizona defense is own another level right now and their offense is finding its stride. Their first game is against the Sabercats in San Jose. This game should be an easy win for the Outlaws as the Sabercats just traded away two of their best players. The next matchup will be an exciting one to see, the Wraiths vs. the Outlaws. Outlaws are 2-2 on the road and this game will certainly come down to home-field advantage. With the big acquisitions that the Wraiths just made it’s extremely hard to pick against them on paper. The next two games should be easy wins as the Liberty and legion are expansion teams that are still trying to find an identity for themselves.
Arizona’s Final Record: 11-3
• Orange County Otters, 6-5: W vs. Wraiths, W vs. Hawks, L @ Wraiths
If you could describe the Orange County Otters season with one word, that word would be inconsistent. After starting the season 1-3, the Otters won five of their last seven and is now sporting a 6-5 record. The next game they play is against the Yellowknife Wraiths in Orange County. Orange County is coming off a win against the Las Vegas legion. Their record at home is astonishing with only one loss there while every single one of the Wraiths losses came on the road. I see Orange County winning and finally clinching a playoff berth. The next team they play is the Baltimore Hawks. The Otters are looking to continue their white hot play against a team who also has not shown the ability to get the job done away from home. Their final game of the season is in the city of Yellowknife against the Wraiths. The Wraiths are white hot at home and unlike their first meeting I see this being a high octane affair. I see this game coming down to the final minutes and the Otters losing their final game in the season.
Orange County’s Final Record: 8-6
• San Jose Sabercats, 3-8: L vs. Outlaws, W @ Legion, L @ Liberty
The San Jose Sabercats are the complete opposite of the Orange County Otters. Starting out the season 3-1, they have since lost every single game since then. The next game they play is against Arizona Outlaws. The last time they played Arizona, they lost 65-0. That is one of, if not the widest margin of victory in the history of the NSFL. The margin of victory will be a lot smaller this time around but I still see the San Jose Sabercats losing to the Arizona Outlaws. Next year the story might be completely different because the Sabercats have acquired some good draft picks and some young stars with potential. They then play the Las Vegas Legion in Nevada. I have a feeling that the people of San Jose will be happy with this prediction because they get to see the Sabercats finally breaking their 8-game losing streak. Their final game of the season is against the Philadelphia Liberty in the city of Brotherly Love. This is will be a game to watch for the hardcore fans. Both teams have very good futures and that future could even be next season. I see the Sabercats losing in a very close match. While the season won’t be what the San Jose Sabercats want, I wouldn’t hang my head down. After trading away two of their best players for some good young talent in Luke Chunk and Darren Smallwood and getting some draft picks, they are looking at a very bright future.
San Jose’s Final Record: 4-10
• Las Vegas Legion, 2-9: L @ Yeti, L vs. Sabercats, L @ Outlaws
The Las Vegas Legion is one of the most interesting stories this season. When they became a team they decided to trade away the future for proven veterans. Many thought that they can be in contention for a playoff berth. Well, most were wrong because they are now sitting in last place in the entire NSFL. They are currently on a three-game losing streak and are coming into Colorado against a white hot Yeti. I do not see the Legion ending their losing streak that week. Afterwards they will travel back home to go against the San Jose Sabercats. I don’t see the Las Vegas Legion winning against the Sabercats as I feel the Sabercats are just a better team than the Legion. Their final game is against the Outlaws in Arizona. The only hope for the Legion is to find something to build off of for next season in this game. This game will push the Legion to end the season on six-game losing streak. It will be interesting to see if the legion will go to in a different direction after this barnburner of a season
Las Vegas’ Final Record: 2-11
Finally the NSFC:
• Baltimore Hawks, 7-4: W vs. Liberty, L @ Otters, L @ Yeti
The Baltimore Hawks has completely turned around their fortune this season. After being the worst team in the NSFC last year, they are now fighting for first place and a potential home field advantage in the playoffs. After winning six straight, the hawks are currently on a two-game losing streak. With a game against the always improving Philadelphia Liberty in Baltimore next, they should be able to break that losing streak. After that game, they will play the Otters at home. The Otters will be coming a big win against the Wraiths. This will be an extremely fun game to watch. Both are great teams and to spice it up even more, it will have major playoff implications. In the end though, I see the Otters sneaking a victory out in the final minutes of the game. If you really want to talk about slobber knocker matchups, the Baltimore Hawks will travel to Colorado to face the Yeti in the last game of both their respective seasons. This has potential to be game of the year. If the Yeti continues on their hot streak it could potentially be a win and you’re in situation. While both teams are extremely talented at home, both are considerably worse away. This was easily the hardest game to pick and I the decision virtually came down to someone has to play at home. I see Baltimore losing to the Yeti with a Bojo Kicksit field goal in the final minute of play.
Baltimore’s Final Record: 8-6
• Yellowknife Wraiths, 7-4: L @ Otters, W vs. Outlaws, W vs. Otters
The Yellowknife Wraiths have one of the most potent offensive attacks this season. The three head monster of Garden, Nuck, Orosz is something you have to see to believe. Add to that a very capable defense you one of the most dangerous teams in the league. This formula has lead them to a very good record of 7-4. They will play the Orange County Otters next and that will be an offensive showcase. With the new additions of A.C. Hackett and Bailey Cook, I see this coming down to the wire. A lack of chemistry from the new guys will ultimately cost the Wraiths this game. They then play the Outlaws in Yellowknife. This game is possibly a preview of the season Ultimus game. With the new pieces getting acclimated with their new teammates, the Wraiths might be on even playing field with the defending champs, the Arizona Outlaws. The twelfth man will play a huge factor in this game’s outcome so I see the Wraiths winning a close one. The Wraiths will then get their rematch against the Otters. I see this match going differently and the wraiths will get revenge on the team that handed them their last lost.
Yellowknife’s Final Record: 9-5
• Colorado Yeti, 6-5: W vs. Legion, W vs. Liberty, W vs Hawks
You could say this has been a rocky (pun completely intended) season for the Colorado Yeti. Last season they were challenging for the Ultimus trophy against the Arizona Outlaws. Now they are kicking and scratching just to make the playoffs. They pulled a white skull in terms of scheduling because the have three straight home games to finish the season. Their first game is against the league worst Las Vegas legion. While this this is a must-win game it is also an easy one. I see the Colorado Yeti beating the Las Vegas Legionin pretty convincing fashion. They then play the Philadelphia Liberty. I think this will be a good game. The Liberty are trying to improve their young core and the Yeti are still looking for that secret sauce in their winning formula. I think the Yeti will pull out a victory but I think the game will be closer than people think. GGG vs. Alvarez. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Yeti vs. Hawks. This game will be remembered in time. This game will be my vote for game of the year. The Yeti will pull out a nail biter thanks to the leg of Bojo Kicksit.
Colorado’s Final Record: 9-5
Philadelphia Liberty, 4-7: L @ Hawks L @ Yeti, L W vs. Sabercats
Coming into the season, the Liberty was always picked to be the worst team in the league. Now they are currently sporting the sixth-best record in the league. Many thought they would be really good in the future, but no one thought that the future could come as soon as next year. The record doesn’t tell the whole story, they have a great group of talent and horde of picks. With that being said, they still have a chance of sneaking into the playoffs. They face the Baltimore Hawks away next, so that will be easier said than done. They then play the Colorado Yeti in the state of Colorado. While I think this game will be close I don't think the Liberty will be able to hanging the long run. After a good showing in Colorado they will run into the Juggernaut named the Arizona Outlaws. If I was a betting I would bet $5 on the Liberty simply because everybody else will pick the Outlaws to win. If we are being honest I would lose that five dollars. They will be able to end on a good note though as I see the the Liberty getting one final victory in their home town.
Philadelphia's Final records: 5-9
Solis Trophy: Orange County Otters @ Arizona Outlaws
Orange county Otters vs. Arizona Outlaws is one of, if not the greatest rivalries of our generation. trash talk on both sides has made this rivalry what it is today. This will be a rematch of last year’s Solis championship game. The Otters will be out for revenge and the Outlaws are looking to prove that they are the best team in the league. The Outlaws seem to the have the Otters’ number as they beat them every single time this season. Their last encounter, the Otters just barely lost, 26-20.This will be an exciting matchup to see but the Arizona Outlaws will be playing for the Ultimus trophy two years in a row
Solis Trophy Winners: Arizona Outlaws 31-24
Glacies trophy: Colorado Yeti @ Yellowknife Wraiths
The Colorado yeti and the Yellowknife Wraiths always put on a good show for the fans. Unlike the Outlaws/Otters rivalry, the Yeti and the Wraiths rivalry is founded on competition. It’s a
lot like boxing the yeti throws a hook, the Wraiths throws an uppercut. They will be tied in wins and losses when this game comes around. This would be an exciting matchup is this was the same wraiths team the Yeti played Week 1. With the additions of A.C. Hackett and Bailey Cook, it will be extremely hard to pick against the Wraiths.
Glacies Trophy Winner: Yellowknife Wraiths 29-10
Ultimus Trophy Yellowknife Wraiths @ Arizona Outlaws
We are finally here, ladies and gentleman. The game to determine who the best football team in the entire NSFL is. Everybody in the city of Yellowknife has been preparing for this moment. Everybody who is in the state of Arizona has waiting for this moment. Offense vs. defense. The unstoppable force vs. the immovable object. Yellowknife Wraiths vs. Arizona Outlaws. If you are any type of football fan then this game is a must-see affair. Expect sparks flying, broken dreams and broken bodies. Led by the fearsome foursome in Orosz, Nuck, Garden, and Cook will be looking to break the Outlaws spirit by scoring at every turn. The Outlaws defense will look to rattle the Wraiths by forcing multiple turnovers. I absolutely see this game coming down to the wire. I think the Wraiths will get out to an early lead. By halftime the Wraiths and the Outlaws will be tied. The Outlaws will start to pull away until Chris Orosz starts lighting it up. The wraiths are in the lead with under 2:00 minutes on the clock. King Bronko will lead the Arizona Outlaws downfield and… score a touchdown! Quick pass to C.A. Chess to win the Ultimus Trophy for the second season in a row. Congratulations Outlaws on a great end to a great season!
Ultimus Trophy winner: Arizona Outlaws 28-24
