Quarterly Review:
Every four games Bill likes to take time away from the daily grind to reflect and review his performances for each game. It is a process which allows Bill to grow as a player, learn from his mistakes, and speak about his goals for future games. Without further ado, I present Bill’s Quarterly review of his last four games of Season 31 of the ISFL, which also happens to be his rookie year with his team, the Orange County Otters.
Week 13 vs San Jose Sabercats:
Coming off a big win versus our rivals, our team was fired up coming into this game in hope of extending our winning streak. The Sabercats were our best chance to get our first winning streak of the season. The Sabercats are hit and miss, they usually don’t perform to well but this season saw them get some wins against a couple of quality opponents so we were trying hard not to look over them. Unfortunately for us, I guess we did look over them because we were defeated by a few touchdowns. On a personal note, I was playing lights out, finishing the game as the leader in tackles and even managed to get a sack as well. Add this to my now developing pass coverage skills and I could literally hear the opponents tried to game plan around me because attacking me had been proving unsuccessful. They couldn’t get any passes completed in my direction and I felt like I was on fire. The rest of the defense, however, were finding it difficult to keep up with their man. While I am proud of myself for my personal performance our there on the gridiron today, I am displeased with the result of the game as we felt the Sabercats should’ve been one of the easier games we played this season. With the season already lost, it did not really matter if we won or lost, but me being the competitive person that I am, I absolutely hate losing. I don’t care if it’s the battle for first or last place, I don’t think I can ever envision myself in a place where I would be comfortable losing. I don’t know though, maybe that’s just me and my competitive nature. But hey, I put up a defensive player of the game performance so I can’t really look to much else into this game because I felt I held my own ground.
Week 14 at Arizona Outlaws:
Man oh man where do I begin with this game. This one was a tight game throughout the entirety of it. Anytime you are playing against the Outlaws, you want to make sure you are playing your best football. Any little mistake and it could cost you the game. Now while I didn’t make the most tackles or even get a sack this game, I did come up HUGE with my pass coverage this game. It is something that I have been working on and emphasizing during practice. The coaches told me a few weeks ago that it was one of the weaknesses to my game, and I hate anytime anyone calls any part of my game “weak” so I made it a point to develop and work on my pass coverage skills. And this game proved to me that my hard work at practice was making a big difference. Not once, not twice, not even three times, but four total pass deflections I recorded this game against one of the best passing teams in the league. They have a dual-threat quarterback that can destroy you as easily with his legs as he can by throwing it to his two all-pro wide receivers. So to be able to step up how I did and deliver a great performance was extra special for me. The game was all tied up as time expired and forced an overtime. And in overtime our team excelled. Our defense stepped up big when it mattered most and gave our offense a shot to win the game. And they made the most of that opportunity by driving that ball down the field and finishing the game with a field goal. The locker room was on fire after the game as many of us still couldn’t believe what had happened.
Week 15 vs New York Silverbacks:
Now by this point in our season, our team had experienced a fair amount of high and low points. No one knew what to expect going into this game against a very good and well-coached team in the Silverbacks, but I’m willing to bet my left nut that no one could’ve predicted the outcome to this game. Coming off our huge overtime win against the Outlaws, we knew we had a lot of momentum coming into this matchup. However as I mentioned earlier, no one could possible know that the game would turn out how it did. Our team started the game fantastically, scoring touchdowns on our first few possessions while our defense was making a lot of big time plays to keep the Silverbacks from scoring against us. The next thing anyone knows, the Otters and concocted a three touchdown lead and showed no signs of slowing down. In facts, but the end of the game, the Silverbacks still had a big goose egg on the scoreboard and didn’t end up scoring until the last seconds of the game when our second team defenses had already taken the field. To say we were happy and excited would be an understatement. We were absolutely beside ourselves after that game and what ensued could only be described as the best way to celebrate an amazing team victory. On a personal level, my pass-protection skills continued to be tested and I successfully passed every test thrown my way. Along with a few more pass deflections I was also able to get a sack and interception that helped keep our momentum going throughout the entire game. It was an absolute excellent team win all-around and we celebrated the crazy win appropriately but clubbing all not alongside some of our most loyal fans we had all season. As crazy as the win was, a part of me couldn’t help but feel that this was the team that I knew we could be that the start of the season. I always knew we had the capability of destroying even the best teams in our league with the amount of talent on our roster, and getting a win like this I know was going to big a huge deal for our and help us understand that we truly do have a great team that can compete with the best of them.
Week 16 at Austin Copperheads:
The final game of the season and final game of my rookie campaign came against one of the best teams in the entire league. However this was also a team that we had upset very early on in the season so I just knew that they were fired up for their chance to get revenge against us. The Copperheads are a very good team, as is evidenced by their season at the end of the season. They had gotten a bye in the playoffs and are looking really good to win the championship this year. Knowing all this, we prepared all week at practice and came in with the mindset that this is a championship game for us. We knew that the Copperheads were going to be gunning for us after we embarrassed them earlier in the season. The game turned into quite the nail-biter with the opposing team not being able to get much separation from us on the scoreboard all game. Unfortunately for us, we were able to get edged out towards the end of the game as we proved unsuccessful at stopping their potent offense on a few key third-down plays on the final drives. The Copperheads were able to run the time off the clock and prevented us from even attempting a late comeback. Kudos to the Copperheads this game as the played us with every intention of winning the game. I know many coaches in this scenario would have benched their star players in order to not risk them getting injured before their playoff run, but no this coach. It was a hard fought game all around and I am proud of the way our guys competed not just throughout this game, but throughout the entire season as well. Even though we knew our season was a lost early on, it didn’t stop anyone on our team from competing to the best of their ability and helping our team stay competitive especially at the end of the season. It was an awesome rookie campaign and I cannot wait until Season 32 begins. Until then, I will be training my heart out in order to become the best player I can be!
