Marc Spector, dressed in an all white suit with a black dress shirt and white tie (Think Michael Jackson in Smooth Criminal, but a black shirt) comes out onto the podium.
Thank you all for coming to this impromptu conference. An overnight decision from the NSFL has given me the chance to be the coach of the Pomona Mongooses, the Prospect Team for the upcoming Season 3 draft after the conclusion of this year. I'll be unveiling my squad here in just a moment but I want to say a few words.
Firstly, thank you to the DSFL for letting this game happen and @Daybe for coordinating it. I also want to thank @HalfEatenOnionBagel for stepping up to coach the Flint Sun Tropics. These prospect games should be a lot of fun for all the players involved and hopefully it can properly showcase their talents.
Without further ado, here's this year's Pomona Mongooses!
Behind Center, at Quarterback, we have the lethal duo of Clifford Rove and Mark Strike. Both of these players are talented and I was excited that I will be able to coach both of them for these games.
At running back, we have the three headed monster of Erlich Burnsman, Grovan Jujicic and Clifford Griffith. Burnsman and I are obviously good friends, so it will be a great time to coach him in the locker room. Grovan and Cliff are interesting young talents too and I think these games will show everyone how skilled they are.
Catching passes all day will be Trey Willie, Brian Wheat and Adam Bennett. We've seen the impact Wheat and Willie have had for their teams so far this season, both as WR3s. Here we'll see them in a more open setting. Adam Bennett is going to be showing off what he has for the first time, so keep your eyes peeled!
At Tight End, we have Josh Davidson and Wren Piper. I know Josh from the Otters Locker Room and he's a solid guy, but Wren Piper looks just as solid.
The offensive line I'm proud of. These guys will be solid up front creating holes for the run game and defending either Strike or Rove. Sammy Walters, Sachimo Zoidberg, Luke Long, Antonio Sandoval, Jughead Jones and Jordan Weal!
On the defensive line, we have Lightskin Thor, Everest Teagarden and Eidur Gustavsson. Eidur is fresh into the draft pool so it will be exciting to see what they can do. Thor is another Otter who I've worked with and Teagarden is a good prospect who should showcase his elite strength in these games.
Clogging the middle to stop the run and flatten the QBs, we have Defensive tackles Ricardo Sandoval and Calkewlated Chambers III. I have great confidence these two will stop their high octane run game.
At Linebacker we have Brice Boggs, James Wright and Donovan Maric. All three of these players have time in the NSFL so I think they're the key to this defense. I took Boggs and Wright early because I know the kind of players they are. Maric is no slouch either.
At corner, my favorite position, we have Xavier Newman, Jackson Harris and Eric Hansen. Harris is another Otter, so he will know the scheme. Newman is a good cover man and Hansen will show everyone why he deserves to be on a team come Season 3.
At safety, these guys are further lynchpins to this defense. Jorge Masvidal, Devin Speed, Ryan Lecavalier and Gavin Graham are going to be flying around the field tackling and hopefully pulling in some interceptions for us.
Lastly, but certainly no least, is my boy, Al Sims, Kicker extraordinaire! He's a recent add to the Otters locker room, but I think he's going places. A good fella and hopefully he'll get some points up on the board for us frequently.
A few questions about my draft.
Q: Why did you take Mark Strike when you had Clifford Rove already?
A: Well, I want to win the game, and Strike is a solid arm. I'd rather have him with my squad than have to face him all 4 games. It was strategy and nothing more. If trading is allowed, I'd be willing to hear offers for him.
Q: What is your thoughts on Iyah Blewitt going first overall?
A: I knew it was going to happen. In prospect games, to expect a bulk of points to come from TDs is a fool's dream. I respect the strategy and built my draft knowing he'd be taken first.
Q: If you had the first pick, would you have taken him?
A: I thought about it, but no. I like the squad I built, and Boggs was my first pick no matter what. Being able to land Wright as well just set me in the right direction early.
Q: Looking at your team, it looks like you were pretty bias towards the Otters. Was this intentional?
A: Yes. and.. no. Trey and Ricardo were guys I definitely had big bullseyes on, and getting them were a priority but I didn't want to reach for them. I took Willie as the first WR taken because I knew if I left him out too much longer, he'd be on the Tropics. Ricardo was the best DT talent in the draft so nabbing him when I did was a no brainer. Other guys though, just fell into my lap. Thor and Harris just happened to be best players available at the position. Sims I knew would be on my squad once I saw Blewitt off the board.
Q: Speaking of Ricardo Sandoval, you also drafted his brother Antonio. On purpose?
A: Yeah, it was actually. Ricardo may never get a chance to be in the same locker room as Antonio in the NSFL, so I kinda thought it'd be a good idea to let them be on the same squad for at least 4 games. I know they're competitive as brothers and would love to have gone up against one another, but they'll get opportunities to do so after they get drafted.
Q: What did you think of HalfOnionBagel's draft strategy?
A: Well, I honestly paid far more attention on who I was gonna take next. There were instances he took a guy I was targetting, and I'm sure I knicked some of the players he was eyeing too. That's just how it works.
Q: What players on his team were you hoping to land?
A: Jaxon Tuck, JD Boom, Arby Krimlaw and Jazzy J. I had Jaxon on my radar for like 5 picks but kept putting off taking him. Boom he took a bit earlier than I was gonna take him. Arby I was hoping would fall but he snaked him out from under me and Jazzy J, I just like his name. I think he should play for Philly, and be a part time DJ.
There are going to be 4 prospect games. What do you think your final record will be?
4-0. I think my team is great. Of course, that isn't likely to happen. Regardless of the final result, as long as these guys go out there and show everyone what they can do, and it improves draft stock, then I've done my job.
Q: When you signed up for the position, a comment was heard about you wanting to change your team name. What were you thinking?
I had several ideas, but as I got thinking, Mongooses is pretty damn great so I ultimately felt that the team name was ideal. I'm in Orange County, so Pomona is literally like right there by Yorba Linda. But if I could move the franchise, I'd take it to Montpelier, Vermont. Montpelier Mongooses. I'm a fan of alliteration.
That concludes this conference. Thank you for showing up. I look forward to the prospect games and having a lot of fun.
