Today I thought it would be a fun idea to talk about the head office, who we are, what we do and what we bring to the table.
Now I will say that this is strictly my own opinion.
First off, what do we do?
Well we try and handle the day to day stuff as well as tackle bigger picture things.
As far as the day to day stuff, this generally involves moving certain threads around (such as a new player page) or adding or removing permissions. This can be something like two teams trading a player or a new player getting a league job such as media grader.
The bigger picture stuff can really be absolutely anything. It can be anything from league balance, rule changes, rule interpretation, punishments, or a number of other things.
The way problems are handled is we bring them up in the head office forum area, discuss things until we feel strongly enough to vote on how to handle it and then we vote.
Sometimes problems are complicated and take a long time to reach an answer. Sometimes we never find an answer we are happy with. However we do try and work hard to ensure we make decisions that benefit and uphold the integrity of the league.
Now I'll talk about the head office members.
First up is Ballerstorm. I think we all know that without him, there would be no NSFL. He has a lot of sim experience and knowledge on how the forums work (specifically admin functionality). This allows him to guide the rest of us on things we aren't as familiar with.
He also has faith in the rest of the head office team to handle problems. He has no concerns deferring to us and we definitely vote on formal issues.
I'm also really glad that he has delegated the way that he has. I think that if he would have tried to be a one man head office, he would have burned himself out trying to handle everything.
Next up is AslyumParty. I kind of feel like he is the CEO. You would probably guess that Ballerstorm was the CEO, but I feel like he is more of the owner in charge of hiring the CEO/COO.
I think AsylumParty does a really good job on keeping the head office focused on things that need to be addressed and moving us in the right direction. He definitely brings up topics for us to discuss often and keeps us on track.
A few examples of this is him putting out the HO survey and the HO issue tracker. Both of these show AsylumParty trying to make the HO better, so we can make the league better.
Anyways, time to talk about Dermot. I think that the best way to describe him is he is our chief operations officer. He is constantly on top of the day to day operations. If there is a NSFL waived player, he most likely handled it. If there is a DSFL draft list of players? He probably compiled it.
This is not to say that Dermot doesn't handle big picture stuff or the rest of us don't help with day to day operations, just that the constant stuff that needs to get done always seems to be on his mind which ensures we don't miss important stuff.
Next up we have Sweetwater. He's a well rounded guy with a good sense of ethics and a way with words.
He manages to help out with the day to day stuff by squeezing in permission changes on his phone or typing up a Noble punishment during his lunch break. One thing that I think Sweetwater brings to the head office is football knowledge and a different perspective.
He definitely helps with counterpoints when we are discussing a problem and helps us look at something from every angle. On top of that, I'm pretty sure he knows more about the technical nitty gritty NFL rules than anyone else in the HO. I think without him, our decisions might not be as good due to not having the entire picture.
And finally I'll talk about myself, 7hawk77. First off I'll say what I'm not good at. If your permission are screwed up, it's probably because of me.
In all seriousness, I think I'm pretty decent at figuring out solutions to problems. I try and reach solutions by looking at data, collaborating with others or really any method I think could be useful.
I also think I'm decent at communicating with others. Sometimes this leads to me arguing with people about head office decisions.
I guess I'd rather people be pissed off at the reasoning I give for a decision than to think the head office is unapproachable and that we made a bad decision behind closed doors.
Anyways, in our survey the biggest thing that we learned was players would like to see more transparency. Hopefully this article gives a little more transparency in to how we operate.
Unfortunately not every thing can be transparent. Sometimes releasing information can cause panic, other times it can mess up something we are investigating.
For example, when the Otter's strategy was messed up for the S3 playoffs.
We had to make a split second decision so we re-ran the game behind closed doors with GM representatives from both teams to figure out if it actually would have changed the result of the game. Since it didn't, we made this announcement: http://nsfl.jcink.net/index.php?showtopic=...indpost&p=79845 and went along with our day. If the result would have changed, we would have made another announcement and shown the game via stream. This was basically a freak accident and we only had a few HO members to make this quick decision, and I stand by that decision.
If people are interested in asking me some questions. I wouldn't mind doing a presser. As far as the Noble situation, we are still investigating. It's just a difficult situation given the past history and the lack of trust.
