The Carlito Crush Diaries
Entry #12
Halfway through the season, sitting at 5-2. The team really seems to be clicking! It’s always a special feeling when a football team is just firing on all cylinders. The offense, defense, and even special teams is just on a roll. We looked to continue that trend in Week 8 against the defending DSFL Champions, the San Antonio Marshals.
This was our first meeting of the season with San Antonio. They played us really tough in the Ultimini championship game last season when I was on Norfolk. They’re a top team here, and this is going to be our toughest test yet, especially since we’re on the road. We’ve gotten in a killer week of practice though, and we headed into the game ready to go.
It was a defensive effort for both teams to say the least. Both teams could get just inside the other’s territory, but just in the first quarter alone we saw a drive stall in our end for them and we missed a field goal in their end. Luckily, my boy Parker had a pick six that gave us a touchdown. Neither team would score again in the first half. The third quarter was more of the same, we managed a field goal however to go up 10-0 heading into the fourth quarter. They ended up cutting the lead to 10-7 early in the fourth, which set up a hectic finish. San Antonio managed to get the ball in our territory with 4 minutes to go in the game. And then they did something pretty weird. They drove down to the 31 yard line, and with 3 minutes to go in the game, on 4th down, they elected to punt the ball? I have no idea why they didn’t just kick the tying field goal. It was only 48 yards. Do they just not trust their kicker that much? It was so weird for them do that, almost like they were playing mind games with us. They didn’t get a chance to score again, and we walked out of San Antonio with a 10-7, hard fought win. I was only 4 for 49 yards. Considering the tight defensive play, that was actually a pretty good game.
So in Week 9, we traveled to Norfolk to meet up with my old team yet again. You don’t ever want to assume a win, but we’re getting a bit proud of ourselves. We still practiced pretty hard though, and the Brooks brothers have been getting us focused. They were scared this was a trap game as we knew we had Chicago waiting in Week 10, and we wanted to kill them again. So what happened? Norfolk came out and rammed the ball down our throats, scoring on the first possession and taking an early 7-0 lead. It was the wake up called we needed. We got focused and took a 14-7 lead into halftime. All that could happen in the third quarter was a Norfolk field goal, as we went back and forth with each other. 14-10 into the fourth, We kicked a field goal, and Norfolk answered with one of their own. On the ensuing kickoff though, Johnny Wachter took the return to the house for a 96 yard TD that gave us a 24-13 lead. That was so awesome and it pumped up the whole team. After the Seawolves pulled within 8 points, we couldn’t get the first down we needed to put them away and they had a last minute drive. It got them down to our 28 yard line, but an unnecessary roughness call pushed them back to the 43 and time would run out. We’d end up winning 24-16, and learning a lesson not to ever take a team lightly or to look ahead. 7-2, with Chicago coming up. Can’t wait.
