Week 5 & 6 Thoughts
We’re rolling now! After going 2-2 to start, I think we finally hit our stride and putting some of the pieces together for the team. Coaches have been putting in lots of overtime and I’m excited that we’re playing another home game. Norfolk gave us lots of trouble in week 1 on the road so we wanted to finally get some revenge when we hosted them in Portland.
Our offense has been putting in lots of work and it’s paying off for sure. I think Roenick is hitting targets better and our receivers aren’t dropping passes as often. It’ll take some more time to figure out our run game though. Gore is still working with Goose and the mentorship has really taken off on a personal level, but it hasn’t translated to the field yet. I’m sure Gore will figure it out soon enough, but for now the coaches said we’re sticking with the vet for most carries.
On the defensive end our linebacker group has really been clicking. This is the first season we ran a 4-3 and it’s paying off with Noah Parker, Frank Pettigrove, and Hingle Mcringleberry lining up close to stop the run. Our defensive coordinator said that we’ve got some pretty run heavy teams this season with Tijuana and San Antonio especially known for having excellent run games. Stats wise I haven’t been doing too well but it’s going ok. I think I’m doing my job to open up the blitz as long as I can pull a few guys up front with enough pressure to take a guard and center at once to give our pass rushers a lane to go through.
We started off well enough getting some good stops in the first and second quarters to lead at the half 9-7. Norfolk is a bot team designed to throw, but they have some great runningbacks in their committee with Nelson and Miller so we needed to respect the run game too. After a really tough third quarter where neither team scored, we lost our wind on defense and Norfolk was able to capitalize on our decline in pace with a field goal and reception. After that, we scrambled at the end to get close, but a sack at Norfolk’s 48 stopped our momentum and we weren’t able to get any closer after that. Definitely tough to lose out at home like that even though we had a great drive at the end. I think both sides of the both were really disappointed with how it turned out and we were left scratching our heads trying to figure out this bot team. It makes matters worse that Norfolk is in our division.
After a tough loss against Norfolk, we needed something to pick us back up again. Luckily we had another home game against another division rival who we *think we had figured out. Our defensive coaches said the Coyotes don’t have a great offensive line and we definitely failed to create enough pressure the last time we played each other.
Well we won this one in impressive fashion. Winning doesn’t describe what really happened though. It was an absolute domination with a final score of 30-0. Coyotes offense only had 23 minutes of playing and their offense was completely stifled. Sure it was at home, but we executed our gameplan to a T. We finished the game with 5 sacks overall including one from yours truly. Our pass defense was great too and we ended with 6 pass deflections from all our secondary’s and a few from our strong linebacker corp. Our passing game struggled a bit, but they held it together with Goose and Gore giving us the spark we needed to get some touchdowns. In the end, it was nice to have something come together and go right for once especially after that Norfolk loss at home.
We have another home game to finish our stint in Portland against the Marshals. I’m really looking forward to this game because we beat them in the Ultimini last season and haven’t lost to them since our new GM Rashaad Brooks took over the team. He’s got us thinking about this one early, but gave us a day off after the Coyotes win so that we could relax a bit and work on resting our muscles for San Antonio.
